1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate). -

This study explores the rise of contemporary Australian horror production: emerging production and distribution models; the films produced; and the industrial, market and technological forces driving production. Australian horror production is a vibrant production sector comprising mainstream and underground spheres of production. Mainstream horror production is an independent, internationally oriented production sector on the margins of the Australian film industry producing titles such as Wolf Creek (2005) and Rogue (2007), while underground production is a fan-based, indie filmmaking subculture, producing credit-card films such as I know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (2006) and The Killbillies (2002). Overlap between these spheres of production, results in ‘high-end indie’ films such as Undead (2003) and Gabriel (2007) emerging from the underground but crossing over into the mainstream. -

Instructor's notes to F402 Time Travel in Science Fiction Session 1 – Introduction Welcome to F402, Time Travel in Science Fiction. The objective of this course is to help you to read, understand and enjoy stories in the genre. The course is in two parts; the first is Today's lecture and discussion on the genre while the second is class discussions of two stories of opposite types. click The reading assignment consists of a short story, All You Zombies, click and a novel, 1632, both of which are available online from links in the handout. click For the convenience of those who prefer dead trees, I have listed a number of anthologies1 containing All You Zombies. Reading Assignment for Sessions 2-3 click All You Zombies is one of two tour de force stories by Robert A. Heinlein that left their mark on the genre for decades. Please read All You Zombies prior to the next session click and 1632 click click Part One, chapters 1-14 prior to the third session. Esc Session 1 Keep in mind that science fiction is a branch of literature, so the normal criteria of, e.g., characterization, consistency, continuity, plot structure, style, apply; I welcome comments, especially from those who have expertise in those areas. In addition, while a science fiction author must rely on the willing suspension of disbelief, he should do so sparingly. There is a lapse of continuity in 1632 between chapters 8 and 9; see whether you can spot it. 1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Relevant Soldier’s Play; Dated Bob and Carol David Sheward · Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 The twisted legacy of racism and shifting attitudes on sexuality are the diverse topics of two current New York stage offerings—a revival of A Soldier’s Play presented on Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company and a musical version of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice produced by The New Group at the Pershing Square Signature Center Off-Broadway. Both present material from previous eras with stark perspectives on how relevant they may still be. While one is still shockingly immediate, the other seems quaint and laughable. What’s not too surprising is that race remains a hot- button issue while unabashed examinations of carnality have passed into the passe. Blair Underwood in A Soldier’s Play. Credit: Joan Marcus Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 and searingly focuses on the corrosive effect of bigotry in the military and American society at large. After a hit Off-Broadway run presented by the Negro Ensemble Company, the suspense Cultural Daily - 1 / 5 - 03.08.2021 2 drama was adapted into a film called A Soldier’s Story, and then revived Off-Broadway in 2005. Fuller skillfully wraps his unflinching observations on racial animus and its poisonous influence into a taut murder mystery. In a 1944 training camp in the deep south, African-American officer Richard Davenport has been assigned to investigate the unsolved killing of career Army black sergeant Vernon Waters. At first, it appears white supremacists are the culprits since lynchings of African-American servicemen were not uncommon, but as Davenport delves deeper into the details of the case, he discovers a complex web of hate and resentment among the black soldiers fueled by institutional discrimination. -

1 Picturing a Golden Age: September and Australian Rules Pauline Marsh, University of Tasmania Abstract: In two Australian coming-of-age feature films, Australian Rules and September, the central young characters hold idyllic notions about friendship and equality that prove to be the keys to transformative on- screen behaviours. Intimate intersubjectivity, deployed in the close relationships between the indigenous and nonindigenous protagonists, generates multiple questions about the value of normalised adult interculturalism. I suggest that the most pointed significance of these films lies in the compromises that the young adults make. As they reach the inevitable moral crisis that awaits them on the cusp of adulthood, despite pressures to abandon their childhood friendships they instead sustain their utopian (golden) visions of the future. It is 1968, rural Western Australia. As we glide along an undulating bitumen road up ahead we see, from a low camera angle, a school bus moving smoothly along the same route. Periodically a smattering of roadside trees filters the sunlight, but for the most part open fields of wheat flank the roadsides and stretch out to the horizon, presenting a grand and golden vista. As we reach the bus, music that has hitherto been a quiet accompaniment swells and in the next moment we are inside the vehicle with a fair-haired teenager. The handsome lad, dressed in a yellow school uniform, is drawing a picture of a boxer in a sketchpad. Another cut takes us back outside again, to an equally magnificent view from the front of the bus. This mesmerising piece of cinema—the opening of September (Peter Carstairs, 2007)— affords a viewer an experience of tranquillity and promise, and is homage to the notion of a golden age of youth. -

THE AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY ANNOUNCES THE FIRST GROUP OF 3RDAACTA AWARD WINNERS A full list of nominees and winners announced today can be found at the end of this document. The 3rd AACTA Awards Luncheon presented by Deluxe was held today at Sydney’s The Star Event Centre, where the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) announced the first group of the 3rd AACTA Awards winners. The charming and often hilarious actor Patrick Brammall, who won the AACTA Award for Best Performance in a Television Comedy for his depiction of entrepreneur Sean Moody in ABC1’s comedy series A MOODY CHRISTMAS in 2013, hosted the sold out event. The group of awards presented at the 3rd AACTA Awards Luncheon presented by Deluxe recognised the talent and innovation of practitioners working across television, documentary, short fiction film, short animation and feature film categories. Joining Brammall to present the day’s 22 Awards was AACTA President Geoffrey Rush, and actors Richard Cawthorne & Damian Walshe-Howling (BIKIE WARS), Glen McMillan from WONDERLAND, Abby Earl and Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood (A PLACE TO CALL HOME). WENTWORTH’S Leanna Walsman, and BETTER MAN’s, Remy Hii - just to name a few. 3rd AACTA Awards Winners Announced The Australian feature film category was dominated by BaZ Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY which won each of the six Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Music Score presented by APRA AMCOS and the AACTA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Visual Effects.
