SUBJECT: Taxation of Graduate Tuition Remission for Spring Courses

The taxation of the Remission benefit you receive for graduate courses you have enrolled in for the Spring semester will begin with the paycheck dated February 9, 2001 and continue through your paycheck of May 4 , 2001.

If your circumstances are such that you would like to offset some or all of this additional tax, you can do so by increasing the number of withholding allowances you are claiming on your W-4 form.

You should know that if you enroll and subsequently withdraw from a course, there may still be reportable income, under the IRS regulations. The reportable status is determined by the date of your withdrawal and any credit that might be due under the refund policy of the University. If you withdraw from a course, it is important that you notify both the Human Resources and Financial Aid Offices so that all of the appropriate adjustments can be made.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Human Resources Office at extension 1013.

THE FACULTY SENATE Minutes of the December 14, 2000 meeting

Present: G. Ballough, M. Bednar, S. Borkowski, D. Cichowicz, E. Cogan, S. DeTurk, E. Giardino, P. Heinzer, L. Miller, M. Moreau, J. Pastis, J. Seydow, S. Stickel, T. Straub, J. Volpe, A. Walsh, J. Welsh, S. Wiley

Excused: D. Robison, S. Smith

Guest: Lynn Collins

The meeting was called to order at 2:10PM. The minutes of the November 9 meeting were approved as written 11-0-3.

The Executive Committee reported on recent activity. The Provost has requested the formation of a task force to review the draft of the faculty handbook, which is currently in the President’s office for approval. The task force will be comprised of three Senators and two at-large faculty members. The Provost has also requested a review of the University Leaves and Grants Committee to determine whether decisions for awarding leaves and grants should be localized to committees within the Deans’ Offices of the three schools, or remain with one centralized University Committee. Three Senators will address this issue and report to the Senate before the end of the Spring semester.

The Committee on Committees (C on C) recommended appointments to fill vacancies on three University committees, with the Senate approving the three nominations. At the request of some of its current members, the C on C will review the status and composition of the Faculty Development Committee. Due to a lack of charges to the committee, it has not met in some time, and questions were raised as to whether the composition of the committee should be changed, or if the committee itself should be temporarily disbanded. The C on C is also conducting a review of the structure of all University committees, and is currently analyzing the results from a survey it sent to faculty late last semester.

The Academic Affairs Committee summarized its findings thus far on its review of promotion and tenure (P&T) guidelines after a meeting with interested Senators on December 7. It has reached consensus on eliminating the full professor sub-group during the promotion to full professor process, eliminating all students votes for all P&T decisions, and requiring a sign-off by participants in a departmental vote that they agree that this is the vote to be forwarded to the P&T Committee. These items will be summarized and sent to Brother Emery Mollenhauer for his comments (as retired Provost) by the Senate President. Consensus has not been reached on several other issues that remain under discussion. The ad hoc group addressing tuition exchange issues created a draft policy that it approved and sent to Ray Ricci for his comments. The Chair of the Financial Affairs Planning Committee (FAP) gave his report about negotiations with administration about next academic year’s salary increases. The University has agreed to a five percent raise, of which 3.4% is (as in the past several years) the consumer price index increase plus one percent, and 1.6% is an increment to begin eliminating the deficit that has arisen due to differentials between the University’s past salary increases vis-a-vis those of its benchmark schools. The Senate voted (16-1-0) to accept the salary proposal of five percent as presented by the FAP committee.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:11PM.

Student Affairs Committee * December 7, 2000 * Meeting Minutes

Present: Joseph Cicala (chair), Sharon Armstrong, Ray Bonnette, Rob Bush, Jessica Fenchel, Doug Kukta, Bruce Leauby, Georgina Murphy, Nicole Snyder, Matt York.

1. An opening reflection was offered and our agenda was reviewed.

2. November 9, 2000 minutes were reviewed and formally approved. (Prior approval had been obtained via e-mail and the minutes have been published in Campus News.)

3. We discussed campus services information gathered this semester.

a. Rob Bush shared and led discussion about information obtained from Food Services. Rob met with members of the Food Services management team and attended a meeting of the Food Services Committee. Matters under consideration include sustaining production and product availability during the later hours of operation, particularly at the Blue & Gold Dining Commons, and ongoing discussion about bringing the dining facilities' schedules into consonance with this year's new class schedule. b. Matt's summary of discussions with students regarding computer/technology services indicated that students want extended hours, more equipment, less downtime for equipment in need of repair, and additional staff for assistance in the computer labs. Sharon suggested, during discussion of this topic, that SGA's and the Division of Student Affairs' continuing efforts to help re-establish a Commuter Student Association focus attention on ensuring that commuter students are further brought into the University community via regular use of Lotus Notes. c. Georgina provided a summary of the general hours of operation plan for the Connelly Library and indicated that experimentation with these hours is done from time to time. Suggestions for future experimentation included round-the-clock hours during final examinations (Bruce) and increased Friday evening and Sunday morning hours (Matt). Ray suggested sequencing the turning off of lights in the building to facilitate smooth closing in the evening. Several members indicated that there it would be helpful for students to have a general facility with multiple fax, copier, and related resources in a location, whether in or outside of the library, that could be accessible round-the-clock. The Division of Student Affairs has tentative plans to "pilot" such a facility for student organizations in the near future. 4. Announcements.

a. Members were apprised of the upcoming Delaware Valley Career Planning Conference to be hosted by La Salle's Career Services (December 13), the Division of Student Affairs Mid-Year Retreat (January 9), the Minority Student Retention Retreat (January 11), the King's Dream 2001 Leadership Day (January 15), the annual Late Night with Student Affairs "midnight breakfast" (February 6), and the Learning La Salle discussion groups to be convened in the spring semester (dates TBA) centering on our ongoing research regarding our students experiences. b. Ray announced that he and January Baker are co-coordinators of this year's SGA Basketball Marathon, scheduled for March 30, and that this year's fund-raising goal has been set at $8,000.00 for the American Cancer Society.

5. New business.

a. Kudos were extended by our student members for the Thanksgiving Dinner co- sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and Food Services and for the buses to away and basketball games being co-sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. c. Kudos and concerns were expressed regarding what is shaping up to be a major concentration of significant programs and events during the last two weeks of March and the first week in April. Two days of Charter Celebrations (including the Charter Dinner and the Student Awards Reception), the Spring Concert, the new Dance Marathon (to be sponsored by Gamma Phi Beta and Phi Kappa Theta, to benefit St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis), the Diplomat-in-Residence Program, the Etiquette Dinner, the SGA Basketball Marathon, and the annual Ring Ceremonies are all scheduled within that period, as of this writing. Discussion indicated that efforts to consolidate publicity and connect participation in these events (i.e., posters and other materials listing all or most of the events to complement individual events' materials; a common, unifying logo or graphic identity for materials; a "punch-card" students could bring to all the events, after which students who attended all or most events could turn in their cards for prizes or entry into a drawing for a grand prize; etc.) would be helpful. (Nominations for Flubacher Awards will be accepted from student organizations.) 3. Any senior who deems himself/herself qualified may request a nomination for one or more awards from an administrator or faculty member. 4. The appropriate awards committees will have the authority to adjudicate recipients from those nominated.

The Joseph F. Flubacher Student Leadership Award is offered to a graduating student who has made a contribution to the quality o f student life by demonstrating significant leadership in student organizations, university governance, and/or intercollegiate athletics.

The student’s record should be free from major disciplinary sanctions, i.e. probation. 4. Academic standing will be a major consideration but will be given less weight than evidence o f leadership skills and accomplishments.

The Brother Emery C. Mollenhauer Award is presented to that graduating senior who best exemplifies those Lasallian values to which Brother Emery was committed during his tenure as Provost, in particular the values of charity and justice which are hallmarks of St. John Baptist de La Salle’s pedagogy.

Qualifications

1. The recipient shall be a senior, graduating student o f the University. 2. The recipient shall have demonstrated, over a period of time, a commitment to community service activities on or off campus. 3. The student should exemplify through his/her involvement in such activities a dedicated concern for the principles o f peace and justice. 4. The student shall have at least a 2.5 cumulative Grade Point Average at the time o f application.

Qualifications

1. The senior to be considered for the award should offer some prima facie evidence of participation in political affairs on and/or off campus. Leadership and participation in other extra-curricular activities are also to be considered, though given somewhat lesser weight. There should also be some indication on the part o f the senior o f intent to pursue a career in politics and/or government. 2. In exemplifying ideals of Judeo-Christian social justice, the recipient should exhibit integrity and courtesy in all o f his/her endeavors. 3. Ordinarily, the recipient will be in the upper half of his/her graduating class.

The John McShain Award is offered to the member of the senior class who maintained an excellent scholastic record and is considered by faculty to have done the most for the public welfare of La Salle University.

Qualifications

1. The recipient shall be a senior, graduating student o f the University. 2. High scholastic achievement normally shall be interpreted to mean Dean’s List standing. 3. In recognition of the monetary value of the award, the recipient should show evidence of his/her intent to attend graduate or professional school. 4. Primary consideration shall be given to leadership and participation in those activities which advance the good name o f the University beyond the immediate campus and which enhance the role o f La Salle University in the life o f the region.

The Student Activities Achievement Awards are presented to those graduating seniors who have made significant contributions to La Salle’s program o f extra-curricular activities. Traditionally, these awards have been intended to recognize those students who do not qualify for other award programs due to academic or other criteria that limit the number o f award recipients. Faculty members and administrators, particularly those who work closely with student organizations, are invited to nominate as many students as they feel are deserving of these awards.

Roles for which a student is compensated by the University, i.e. office workers, Resident Assistants, scholarship athletes, and Union, Food Service, and Athletic Department Student Managers, are not by themselves given consideration. When nominating a student who falls into one of these categories, please also include all other known areas of participation.

When nominating students, please keep in mind that our intent is to recognize significant contributions. As the number o f recipients has increased dramatically in recent years, concern has been expressed (often by students themselves) that nominators and selectors should discriminate carefully in order to assure that students recognized are truly distinguished.

Thanks very much for your attention and response to this request. Please do not hesitate to contact me or my assistant, Ms. Maureen Doyle, at x 1374, if you have additional questions. UNIVERSITY Division of Student Affairs

Do Local (and/or Internet) Research on Your Historical Theme -- W IN THE PRIZE Saint John Baptist de La Salle on Prayer of the Heart (from Volume 1 o f Duties o f a Christian)

There are many ways we can pray to God in our hearts. Saint La Salle spoke about one method in particular when he wrote: “We can pray to God through our SILENCE... This is what we do when we simply place ourselves in the presence of God in an attitude of respect and adoration but without expressing anything or asking for anything. This way of praying seems to be w h at S t. Cassian speaks of in his ’9th Conference' when he remarks that sometimes in prayer the Spirit hides within us in a profound silence."

Let us remember... we are in the holy presence of God.

THE PULITZER-NOMINATED PLAY "LEGACY OF GALILEO" COMES TO LA SALLE

La Salle University will host the Parnassus Production of Rusty Bynum's "Legacy of Galileo", a spellbinding biographical drama which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1999.

The show features Roy Henderson, a 47 year veteran actor and director whose long history in the entertainment industry includes five years with the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company in England. His most recent tour with the RSC was a command performance for Queen Elizabeth and her family at Windsor Castle during her silver jubilee, celebrating the 25th year of her reign.

Delightfully humorous, dramatically compelling, painstakingly researched, and historically accurate to eight biographers, "Legacy of Galileo" is a powerful history of the Renaissance visionary who risked all in his search for truth. The solo performance, in two acts, illustrates many sides of Galileo Galilei: scientist, philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, literary master, the father of mechanical engineering, theologian humanist, and, despite imprisonment by the Inquisition, devout Christian.

THE HONORS PROGRAM TO La Salle Community FROM: Jeannine Calhoun, Senior Woman Administrator DATE: February 2, 2001 RE: National Girls and Women in Sports Day

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like to invite the La Salle Community to attend an informal celebration for National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday, February 7th from 1:00 - 1:50 PM. The event will be held in the Hayman Center Mezzanine. Refreshments will be served.

Dr. Jacqueline Pastis, Assistant Professor of Religion and Director of the Women’s Studies Program at La Salle will be the featured speaker.

In a recently published article in the Sports Business Journal, Donna Lopiano, Executive Director of the Women's Sports Foundation writes that girls and women are encouraged to participate in sports and physical activity for four reasons:

• Girls/Women who play sports reduce their risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and breast cancer; and have higher levels of confidence and self esteem than girls who don't play. • Girls/Women who play sports are less likely to experience an unintended pregnancy or take drugs are more likely to get better grades and graduate form high school. • Being healthy and staying healthy is a lifelong concern for all women. • Women succeed in today's business world when they have established skills of teamwork, discipline and goal setting and know how to deal with success and failure in highly competitive environments.

Please join us in the celebration on the 7th, for the benefit of being involved in sports is not only physical fitness. It can also become a resource for professional development. For example, research shows that 80 percent of the female executives in Fortune 500 companies played sports.

Please contact me at 215-951 -1523 or [email protected] if you are able to attend.

Thank you. La Salle University Teaching and Learning Center
