Abstract Between 2017 and 2019, California experienced a series of devastating wildfires that together led over one million people to be ordered to evacuate. Due to the speed of many of these wildfires, residents across California found themselves in challenging evacuation situations, often at night and with little time to escape. These evacuations placed considerable stress on public resources and infrastructure for both transportation and sheltering.

From: Andy Burnham [email protected] Subject: Heartbreaking Date: 29 September 2014 17:22 To: Jon Lansman Jon, 91 year old Harry Leslie Smith gave one of the most moving speeches I've ever heard at conference last week. His story about his sister is just heartbreaking. This is something everyone should hear. You can read his words below or watch his full speech here: http://action.labour.org.uk/Harrys-story "I came into this world in the rough and ready year of 1923. I am from Barnsley and I can tell you that my childhood, like so many others from that era, was not an episode from Downton Abbey. Instead, it was a barbarous time. It was a bleak time. It was an uncivilized time because public healthcare didn't exist. Back then hospitals, doctors and medicine were for the privileged few because they were run for profit rather than as a vital state service that keeps a nation's citizens fit and healthy. My memories stretch back almost a hundred years, and if I close my eyes, I can smell the poverty that oozed from the dusky tenement streets of my boyhood. I can taste on my lips the bread and drippings I was served for my tea. I can remember extreme hunger, and my parent's undying love for me. I can still feel my mum and dad's desperation as they tried to keep our family safe and healthy in the slum we called home. Poor mum and dad. No matter how hard they tried to protect me and my sisters, the cards were stacked against them because common diseases trolled our neighbourhoods and snuffed out life like a cold breath on a warm candle flame.

  • Borderline Bar & Grill Shooting, Thousand Oaks, California
Borderline Bar & Grill Shooting, Thousand Oaks, California November 8, 2018 November 8, 2018 (Los Angeles Times) http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-thousand-oaks-20181107-story.html A gunman's rampage claimed the lives of 11 victims and a sheriff's sergeant late Wednesday in Thousand Oaks in a mass shooting that also left the gunman dead. Authorities got a report at about 11:20 p.m. that a man had opened fire at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a country-western dance bar at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive. Officers at the scene said the gunman might have used smoke bombs in the incident, but authorities later said they could not confirm that. Officers indicated that approximately 30 shots had been fired and that victims were fleeing from the bar into the surrounding neighborhood. Among the first officers at the scene were sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer, according to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean. Dean said Helus was stuck multiple times by bullets. Helus died later at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, a choked-up Dean said at a news conference early Thursday. Dozens more officers were called to the scene, and the gunman was dead when they arrived. Dean said he didn't know how the gunman died. Officers began escorting large groups of people to safety as they left the area. Officers were also entering the bar and finding people who had hidden in out-of-the-way areas. People took shelter in restrooms and even crawl spaces in the attic, among other places, according to officers at the scene.

BANKS AND GUNS: SOCIAL ACTIVISM FOLLOWING THE PARKLAND, FLORIDA SHOOTING I. INTRODUCTION In the wake of the significant number of recent mass shootings in our country, social activism on the part of corporate America is on the rise in an attempt to bring about change in the legislature regarding gun control.1 Following a deadly school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February 2018, several fi- nancial institutions, including a handful of banks—Bank of America, Citigroup, and JP Morgan Chase—unveiled new policies affecting their relationships and activities with gun manufacturers and retailers.2 This Note examines the policies put in place by these financial institutions and the response by the gun industry. Additionally, it surveys the arguments from both sides and whether or not courts would be likely to find that the policies violate the right to bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

Now he brings his unique perspective to bear on NHS cutbacks, benefits policy, political corruption, food poverty, the cost of education - and much more. From the deprivation of s Barnsley and the terror of war to the creation of our welfare state, Harry has experienced how a great civilisation can rise from the rubble. But at the end of his life, he fears how easily it is being eroded. Harry's Last Stand is a lyrical, searing modern invective that shows what the past can teach us, and how the future is ours for the taking. If it doesn't make you angry there's something wrong with you. It's inspirational stuff. Labour should read to get fire in bellies. Tories should read in shame.

THOUSAND OAKS SHOOTING DIGITAL VERSION: WWW.LATIMES.COM/CALIFORNIA/LA-ME-BORDERLINE-SHOOTING-HEROISM MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2018 THIS PHOTO of 11 friends was taken minutes before Ian Long entered Borderline. Two – Justin Meek, left, and Telemachus Orfanos, right hand raised at rear – died in the massacre. HEROISM AND SURVIVAL INSIDE A COUNTRY BAR Most of the people who died in the Thousand Oaks mass shooting did so while trying to save others By Soumya Karlamangla and Brittny Mejia hey grin as they drape their arms around one another. Telemachus Orfanos and Brendan Kelly lift their beers in a toast. A tattoo memorializing the Las Vegas mass shooting — which both men survived — is visible underneath Kelly’s shirt. In front of them, Justin Meek and Garrett Gratland prop up a friend who is Tcrouched off-balance, a finger pressed mischievously to his pursed lips. An American flag is displayed behind the 11 friends, who lean close together. The photo was taken around 11 p.m. Nov. 7, minutes before a stranger walked into Borderline Bar and Grill, spraying bullets as people ducked for cover and fled in terror. By the end of the night, 12 people had been killed, making the mass shooting one of the deadliest in American history. T wo of t he f r iend s i n the photo did not make it out alive. Some chose to stay in the bar so they could help others hide and escape or shield them from gunfire. The bar was popular with veterans and cops, many of whom put their training saving lives to use that night.

Oral History is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The corrected manuscript is bound with photographs and illustrative materials and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use.
