CITY REPORT (Iraq) Opera House (never built), serves as a distinguished gateway to the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. Its president at the time, Grady Gammage, was a good friend of the architect. Wright’s First Christian Church (designed in 1948/built posthumously by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in 1973), 6750 N. Seventh Ave., incorporates desert masonry, as in Taliesin West, and features distinctive spires. Wright’s ten distinguished Phoenix area homes include the circular David Wright House (1952), 5212 East Exeter Blvd., designed for his son in north Phoenix (1950), and the H.C. Price House (1954), 7211 N. Tatum Blvd., with its graceful combination of concrete block, steel and copper in a foothills setting. Wright’s approach continued through his pupils, such as Albert Chase McArthur, who is generally credited with the design of the spectacular Arizona Biltmore Hotel (1928), 24th St. and Missouri Ave. Wright’s influence on the building is clear in both massing and details, including the distinctive concrete Biltmore Blocks, cast onsite to an Emry Kopta design. ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY 949 East Second Street Library and Archives Tucson, AZ 85719 (520) 617-1157 [email protected] PC 238 Lollesgard Postcard Collection 1935 - 1957 DESCRIPTION The Lollesgard Postcard collection represents the remaining stock from the Lollesgard Specialty Company of Tucson Arizona. The collection contains two distinct parts one with postcards and greeting cards and a second portion of photographs and negatives. The postcards consist of real cards (primarily from the Frashers Inc.), linen or art cards, and chrome cards. The cards were produced from the late 1940s to the 1970s. All have divided backs. Nineteen postcard scrapbooks contain representative samples of postcards available for customer purchase. Five boxes consist of loose cards representing stock cards carried by store. These cards have been arranged by postcard type and then topically by major theme or city for which they represent. Two small boxes house greeting cards with western themes also sold by Lollesgard. The photos and negatives represent images taken or purchased by Lollesgard for consideration in postcard development. Most of the images were not developed into cards and are therefore unique to the postcard portion of the collection. They have been arranged topically as they originally came. 42 Boxes, 21 linear ft. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Holger A. “Lolly” Lollesgard was the founder and owner of the Lollesgard Specialty Co. Inc. of Tucson Arizona. He was born in 1893 and was a descendant of the pioneer Alstrup family of Chicago and the Von de Reke Lollesgard family of Denmark. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1915 and participated in World War I with the 303rd Cavalry Regiment. -

What we design must be durable, useful, beautiful, appropriate to its context, and not a waste of resources, energy, or materials. Designing our environment is an art, a technology, and a social science that has a history as long as human culture. The goals of the faculty include offering stu- dents an education that becomes the basis for life-long growth and improvement as professionals, advancing the discipline in both theory and practice, and improving the quality of the environment by making the expertise and knowledge of the faculty available to other professionals and to the public. ORGANIZATION Academic Organization. The college is composed of three academic units: School of Architecture School of Design School of Planning and Landscape Architecture Administration of the college is the responsibility of the dean, who in turn is responsible to the president of the uni- versity through the senior vice president and provost. ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY PAOLO SOLERI AVAILABLE FOR SALE │ 2017.11.24 PAOLO SOLERI (1919–2013) Through his work as an architect, urban designer, artist, craftsman, and philosopher, Paolo Soleri explored the countless possibilities of human aspiration. One outstanding endeavor is Arcosanti, an urban laboratory, constructed in the Arizona high desert. It attempts to test and demonstrate an alternative human habitat which is greatly needed in this increasingly perplexing world. This project also exemplifies his steadfast devotion to creating an experiential space to "prototype" an environment in harmony with man. In his philosophy ”Arcology (Arcitecture + Ecology). Soleri formulated a path that may aid us on our evolutionary journey toward a state of aesthetic, equity, and compassion. For more than a half century, his work, marked by a broad-ranging and coherent intellect (so scarce in the age of specialization), has influenced many in search of a new paradigm for our built environment. A portion of their proceeds help support charities. THIS PHOTO The Ceramic Apse at Arcosanti. In the center are large vats in which clay is mixed with water to create a slurry that is used to make ceramic windbells. Shelves are filled with hundreds of plaster bell molds. On the outer edge of the apse is a covered silt bed; the slurry is poured into the dirt to create “earth bells,” similar to those Soleri made years ago. Abhoring the expansion of cities and their excessive use of land and resources, he named his retreat Cosanti, a portmanteau of two Italian words, “cosa,” meaning things or matter, and “anti,” meaning against. To support his family while slowly replac- ing the property’s small wooden house with a compound of innovative concrete buildings that would serve as his home as well as his archi- tectural and craft studios, he began creating and selling “earth cast” ceramics, including windbells. -
