INTRODUCTION
The Maties Cricket Club had another good season in 2010/11 despite the First XI not winning the Boland Premier League. Maties only lost one match during the whole competition. Nevertheless, they won the Boland Premier League 40-over competition and reached the semi-finals of the Regional Twenty20 and the Premier League Twenty20 competition.
In addition 12 Matie players represented the Cape Cobras and Boland at various levels throughout the season.
Vics, on the other hand, had a very disappointing season winning only 1 out of 11 matches in the Premier 45-over competitions.
The Maties II and III sides again performed well, with Maties II winning the First Division 45-over competition
During the season a total number of 65 players represented the various university sides. The commitment by all the players and the coaching staff (Roger Telemachus, Warren Kirsten and Leon Roberts) and the other support staff could not be faulted.
The season furthermore saw the continuation of meetings with Steinhoff International to strengthen the company’s long-term involvement with the Club. My thanks go to the company and its senior management with a particular thanks to Mr Derrik Matthew for his interest and day-to-day support when required by the Club. Without the support of a company like Steinhoff International club’s like maties would not be able to survive.
My thanks also to many former players for the generosity in supporting the Club financially.
COMPETITIONS
Maties finished 2nd in the 45 over competition (Premier League), and reached the semi-finals of the Regional Twenty20 competition and the Premier League Twenty20 competition.
Maties II performed very well by winning the First Division 45-over competition.

BOLAND CRICKET BOARD
The Club’s relationship with the Boland Cricket Board remained very good with two former head coaches, namely Messrs Omar Henry (Boland CEO) and Adrian Holstock serving on the Boland Cricket Board’s Executive Committee and their respective roles in this regarded is much appreciated.
WOMEN CRICKET
Maties entered a side in the Boland league and performed very well. Several players, namely, Stephanie Bester, Nathanael Christiaans, Simone Marais, Ronél Pentz and Yolandi Potgieter, represented Boland. A special word of thanks goes to their coach, Mr André Potgieter, for his loyal support and hard work.
“KOSHUIS“LEAGUE
There was again great interest in the “koshuis” league. Steinhoff Wilgenhof won the Weekend League by beating Steinhoff Dagbreek in the final. Steinhoff Eendrag won the Week League.
COMMITTEE
My sincere appreciation goes to all my committee members, namely Messrs Andre du Toit, Derek Mitchell, Heine van Rhyn, Oscar Nauhaus John Loxton and Alec Brown for their loyal support during the season.
2 A special word of thanks must go the Club’s Head Coach, Roger Telemachus, the Assistant Coach, Warren Kirsten, as well as Leon Roberts who coached Maties II and III. Everyone contributed greatly to the success the Club in the past season. Nevertheless, a special word of appreciation must to Mr Andre du Toit, the University’s cricket coordinator, for his continued commitment in making the season successful, but also enjoyable.
A huge note of thanks also to the other personnel responsible for playing facilities, as well as Mr Kallie Daniels for his continued support and service to the Club.

2. Pre USSA Preparation Due to the time of the year we were fortunate to be able to use club form in the league and amateur form as the basis for our selections. A well balanced team was eventually decided on and with great confidence and self belief we made the short trip to the University of the Western Cape.
3. Transport We used Mini Busses hired from the “Voertuigpoel”.
4. Accommodation We were accommodated in the Hostel of the University of the Western Cape. The meals were also provided by UWC. The rooms were neat and the food was adequate. A big thanks must go to the local organizing committee, who went out of there way to make our stay enjoyable.

6. Sponsors Steinhoff International is the official sponsor of the team and was very proudly represented by the Maties team. Our thanks must go to them for the addition of our trainer Grant van Velden and Heinrich Grobbelaar, who added valuable knowledge through his specialty field of sports psychology. We as the players and management are well aware of the privilege. Thanks to André du Toit, Sidney van Heerden and Steinhoff.
7. Functions A Managers and captain’s meeting was held at UWC upon arrival. Here the day to day running of the tournament was explained and logistics were discussed. The final Dinner was held at the Belhar Indoor sports centre. At the function the USSA team was announced and a good time was had by all. Thanks to all that were involved in the event.

Day 5: (5/6 Place Playoff) UFS 205/10 (O Erasmus 2 for 28, L van Wyk 2 for 33) Steinhoff Maties 207/7 (D Botha 72, O Erasmus 31) Steinhoff Maties won by 3 wickets In a tournament where there was not much to choose between the sides, small mistakes can sometimes be magnified into tournament changing moments. This was definitely the case in the 2010 USSA tournament.
9 We entered day one with great confidence and after posting a competitive total and restricting our opposition to 90 for 4. A relatively straight forward dropped chance in the field nine runs later allowed our opposition back into a game they were behind in and gave them the momentum to claw there way to a win on the last ball. Our performance on the second day was below par for the group of players we had at the tournament. This unfortunately put us out of the running to capture the tournament win. A fantastic run chase on the third day against the eventual tournament winners NMMU, saw the Steinhoff Maties salvage some pride at the tournament. Set 268 to win on a good wicket we were never in trouble after a great start by our opening pair. 13 off the last over were easily achieved by the middle order and a victory with two balls to spare made the previous day’s loss even more difficult to stomach. Day four and five were now vitally important to secure our ranking in the tournament and a clinical performance against PUKKE gave us a bit of breathing room on the last day. Playing on a slow and deteriating wicket the winning of the toss proved to be just the thing the team needed to dominate the game. A modest total always proved enough as PUKKE were reduced to 20 for 4 in the first 8 overs with Danny Childs again doing the damage with the new ball. We were fortunate to play our final game at “home” at Wellgevallen. UFS won the toss and batted. A brisk start and the loss of one of our opening bowlers to injury, the crutial break was made in the 13th over, which prompted a continuous stream of wickets. Until a flurry at the end saw UFS post a moderate 205. Another fine innings by our man of the tournament, Dewald Botha, saw us to within touching distance of the win which was sealed by the lower middle order to win with 8 balls to spare. The final place standings were: 1. NMMU 2. Tuks 3. UWC 4. UCT 5. Steinhoff Maties 6. UFS 7. Pukke 8. Wits
9. Behavior The behavior of each team member was exemplary at all times and they represented the University with honor and pride. On and off the field the players were respectful of their fellow cricket players as well as the representing dignitaries.
