Mexico PROBABLE PITCHERS also plays an exhibition game against the Arizona Diamondbacks tomorrow at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick at 1:10 pm MT. • Team Mexico is in Jalisco’s Pool D bracket and offi cially begin WBC competition on Thursday, Tuesday, March 7 vs. Team Mexico (1:10pm) March 9 against Italy. Mexico is also scheduled to play Puerto Rico on Saturday, March 11 and Venezuela on Sunday, March 12. RHP Walker Lockett RHP Luis Mendoza • If they advance, Mexico will play their second round action at Petco Park in San Diego begin- LHP Christian Friedrich ning on Tuesday, March 14 through March 18. RHP Jose Ruiz • Petco Park will welcome the Classic for a third time when it hosts the second round pool. The downtown ballpark previously hosted the inaugural WBC semi-fi nals and fi nal in 2006 as well LHP Brad Wieck as second-round games in 2009. Wednesday, March 8 - OFF DAY MORE ON MEXICO: Mexico is currently ranked No. 6 in the world by the World Baseball Softball Confederation and No. 12 in the world by the International Baseball Federation. Thrusday, March 9 vs. Brewers (1:10pm) • The Mexican National Team fi nished in 11th place in the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup after going undefeated in the fi rst round of play. The team also earned bronze medals in the 2006 RHP Jarred Cosart TBA Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games, and a bronze medal in 2007 at the Pan American Games. • In the 2006 World Baseball Classic, Mexico fi nished Round One at the top of its pool fi nishing 2-1 and was later eliminated in Round Two after losing to Korea and Japan. Friday, March 10 at Angels (1:10pm) • In the 2009 World Baseball Classic, Team Mexico advanced to Round Two, but was defeated by Korea and Cuba to fi nish in eighth place.     The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

    Pronk's homer punctuates sweep of Royals By Robert Falkoff / Special to MLB.com | 4/15/2012 8:20 PM ET KANSAS CITY -- The Indians made a statement with their offense over the weekend and Travis Hafner delivered the symbolic exclamation point. In Cleveland's 13-7 victory over the Royals on Sunday, Hafner launched the most majestic of his team's four homers. Hafner's 456-foot blast to right field in the fifth inning off Luis Mendoza traveled so far that it wound up as a souvenir inside Rivals Sports Bar, which is located high above the wall. No word on whether it came down in somebody's order of chicken wings. It was the first homer to land in the Rivals establishment since Kauffman Stadium was renovated in 2009. In short, Hafner got all of it and then some. "I was able to stay back on an off-speed pitch and backspin it," said Hafner, who finished 3-for-4. "I think there have been some [homers] before that measured in the 470s, but that's about as good as I can hit 'em." Shelley Duncan, Casey Kotchman and Jason Kipnis joined Hafner in the home run parade, as the Indians put up runs in bunches and applied the finishing touches on a three-game sweep. Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, making his return from a five-game suspension, labored through five innings, but got the win thanks to robust offensive support. "The first three innings, it was hard to get in a good rhythm," said Jimenez, who refused to use rustiness as an excuse.
