Introduction In the freshwater aquarium, stingrays are among the most desired of unusual pets. Although a couple species have been commercially available for some time, they remain relatively uncommon in home aquariums. They are often avoided by aquarists due to their reputation for being fragile and difficult to maintain. As with many fishes that share this reputation, it is partly undeserved. A healthy ray is a robust animal, and problems are often due to lack of a proper understanding of care requirements. In the last few years many more species have been exported from South America on a regular basis. As a result, many are just recently being captive bred for the first time. These advances will be making additional species of freshwater stingray increasingly available in the near future. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The present study contributes to the knowledge of the cestode fauna of species of Styracura de Carvalho, Loboda & da Silva, which is the putative sister taxon of freshwater potamotrygonids—a unique group of batoids restricted to Neotro- pical freshwater systems. We document species of Rhinebothrium Linton, 1890 as a result of the examination of newly collected specimens of Styracura from five different localities representing the eastern Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Overall, we examined 33 spiral intestines, 11 from the eastern Pacific species Styracura pacifica (Beebe & Tee-Van) and 22 from the Caribbean species S. schmardae (Werner). However, only samples from the Caribbean were infected with members of Rhinebothrium. Rhinebothrium tetralobatum Brooks, 1977, originally described from S. schmardae—as Hi- mantura schmardae (Werner)—off the Caribbean coast of Colombia based on six specimens is redescribed. This rede- scription provides the first data on the microthriches pattern, more details of internal anatomy (i.e., inclusion of histological sections) and expands the ranges for the counts and measurements of several features. -

STINGRAYS Blotched Fantail Ray at a depth of 19 meters, Wolf Rock, off Double Island Point (Rainbow Beach), Queensland, 4 August 2006, (Australian Museum) Introduction Rays are the largest type of venomous fish. They are among the commonest causes of fish-related injury and/or envenoming worldwide. Stingrays are usually placid animals that are non-threatening to humans except if disturbed. Injury is usually the result of traumatic contact with the stinging barb(s) of the animal’s tail. Although stingrays do have venom in their tail, the trauma of the injury is usually more important than any venom mediated effects. These traumatic injuries can be highly lethal, the most famous recent example being that of the death of Australian Wildlife adventurer, Steve Irwin in 2006. There is no specific antivenom, treatment is supportive, surgical and antibiotics for wound infections. Biology Rays are flat-bodied cartilaginous fish of the same class as sharks (Elasmobranchii). Kingdom: Animalia. Phylum: Chordata. Class: Chondrichthyes Subclass: Elasmobranchii Order: Myliobatiformes Suborder: Myliobatoidei Families (8): Hexatrygonidae, (Six gill stingrays) Plesiobatidae, (Deep water stingrays) Urolophidae, (Stingarees) Urotrygonidae, (Round rays) Dasyatidae, (Whiptail stingrays) Potamotrygonidae, (River stingrays) Gymnuridae, (Butterfly rays) Myliobatidae, (Eagle rays) Habitat Rays are found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide. Numerous species of are found in waters all around Australia. They are also found in freshwater systems in tropical regions around South America, Africa, and South East Asia. Pathophysiology Although stingray barbs do carry venom, it is generally not highly toxic to humans. Far more dangerous is the penetrating injury caused by the barb itself. The sharp bony spine produces a laceration and simultaneously leaves venom in the wound. -

In this region, the taxa have signifi cant economic (3) importance for the ornamental fi shing industry, being intensively captured, especially 93(3) the species Potamotrygon leopoldi, which is endemic to this basin. In the attempt to propose a species-specifi c DNA marker for the species from Xingu, as well as ensuring DOI a robust and reliable molecular identifi cation, the present work analysed mitochondrial 10.1590/0001-3765202120191325 gene portions Cytochrome Oxidase C – subunit I (COI) and Cytochrome B (Cytb) of fi ve species: P. leopoldi; Potamotrygon orbignyi; Potamotrygon motoro; Potamotrygon scobina and Paratrygon aiereba. We found haplotype sharing, with a total absence of reciprocal monophyly in the majority of taxa. Individuals morphologically identifi ed as a species showed mitochondrial DNA from another, suggesting the fi rst record of hybridization amongst freshwater stingrays of Xingu. -

Nunes3 Abstract The Brazilian Amazonian coast, extending from Amapá to Maranhão states, is drained by a series of small to medium sized rivers of the Amazon basin. The Pindaré- Mearim is an isolated basin formed by the junction of the Pindaré and Mearim rivers at its lower portion. Along the Pindaré and Mearim rivers there is a single reported species of freshwater stingray identified asPotamotrygon motoro. Although specimens have been deposited in research institutions, most of these specimens have been captured on the Amazon basin and its direct tributaries or along the Panará-Paraguay river basin. Hence, there is a severe lack of information on the P. motoro of the Pindaré- Mearim river basin. Prédio 1-ICB, 2º andar, Coroado I, 69.080-900, Manaus, Amazonas, Brasil. *Autor para correspondência: [email protected] The recently described freshwater stingray Plesiotrygon nana Carvalho and Ragno 2011 was observed in the Rio CT Tarauacá, a tributary of Rio Juruá, in the Brazilian Amazon. The specimens were similar to those examined in the original description of the species and are distinct from Plesiotrygon iwamae Rosa, Castello and Thorson 1987. The TRA three specimens of P. nana have a dorsal coloration composed of fine rosettes and a very small spot on the disc edge, a circular disc which is small and has slightly rhomboidal spiracles, a distal coloration of the tail posterior to ABS the caudal stings and high density of dermic denticles. This finding extends the geographic distribution of P. nana and reports the presence of this potamotrygonid species in small tributaries of white waters from the Upper Rio Juruá.
