A success story ..Tane joined the 180 Court Supervised High Country Camps Mentoring Programme when he was 15. A learning problem predisposed him to self-exclude from high school, to evade school - ing altogether and to keep bad company. We worked with his strengths which were his physical hardiness, his honesty and his wish to progress and get employment. Tane was a successful participant on 180’s 243km Southern Alps Traverse across the in Nov 2013. He joined the 180 14 day Dairy Course in January 2014 and graduated with his Dairy Farming Certificate and 91 NCEA credits. Through NEWSLETTER Peter Mason and the Ngā Hau e Whā National Marae

we linked him with his iwi in the North Island. 180 January 2015 then secured him a job in a potato warehouse in Halswell but he had to leave this Canterbury, job when he broke his wrist. Tane now works in a tannery, has bought his mother a car, has just received his driver’s licence and thinks life is just great. He is saving money and is proud to have been on the 180 course.

CURRENT COMMENT: The right to an education is paramount. 180 Degrees is contracted by Child Youth & Family to provide Cass Saddle Hut Court Supervised Camps & Mentoring to turn around the lives of youth offenders. 180 is also contracted by the Ministry of Education to provide Alternative Education for 13—16 year old students who are Chris Heaphy leading the marginalised in mainstream education and excluded team down from Camp Saddle by high schools. As you will see, the 180 Degrees School has a good record of achievement. It accomplishes this by using the outdoors as a classroom and as a means to form a connection with students. In doing so we convince our young people to step up. There is a serious need for a school which will take 13-17 year olds from “off the street” as well as from the AE consortium. Our staff work tirelessly to stimulate and energise those young people who are at “the hard end” and often elude truancy agencies. Jeremy Nurse, Lagoon Saddle 180 mentoring staff have often had a young person willing to attend our school but have been Sam Brown Managing Trustee faced with restrictive protocol and hence non-enrolment. 180 Degrees School

There are 14 students at our school which is contracted by the Ministry of Education to operate an Alternative Education programme. The following is a Report by our Head Teacher Kate Robinson.

“We have had an incredibly successful year being impressed with our students’ work ethic and determination during the correspondence sessions. Each week students choose three goals to focus on, take Heading down the Jollie Brook ownership of their progress and reflect on it at the end of each week. The goals are based around numeracy, literacy, physical education, home economics, and key competencies. The 180 Degrees School has a carefully planned Outdoor Education programme. Camps and expeditions start in the first term and become more challenging and Tubing the Sisters Gorge on demanding throughout the year culminating in the 243km Southern the Upper Hurunui River Alps Traverse (SAT) from Hokitika, over the Main Divide and finishing at New Brighton. Our 2014 regime began with rock climbing, boxing, gymnastics and swimming. For many of our students this was their first experience in these activities. Wednesdays are always outdoor days with a focus on preparing students up for the SAT. Preparation involved biking the various Bike Trails, overnight bivouacs in exciting places, tubing down rivers, swimming, river crossing and a demanding 30km two day tramp up the Hurunui River, over Gabriel Saddle and down the Jollie Brook stream. Our camps, day trips and expeditions also focused on positive student interaction, respect and attitudes. There was an emphasis on prosocial behaviour, full participation and respect for themselves, others and the environment. The SAT in November was a huge achievement for our young people. A 50km cycle from Hokitika to Kumara, a 2 day 27km hike from Grasmere to Cora Lynn, and a 40km cycle from Oxford to New Brighton saw them to the finish. Celebrations were held at New Brighton and was a wonderful way to finish a tough 6 day trip. A huge thanks to everyone who came along and supported these young people on their success.” Horseman Dave Sligh
