The last time these tcams mel was in the epic classic final of 2005 that wenl to a replay with Paul Shelley com ing off the bench 10 break the dead lock with 2 goals in extra time orthe second day and in so doing ended the Ki llcnaule famine that had lasted for 14 years winning their 16· South Ti tle. In the rep lay played 0 11 28 Aug it was Ba llillgany who were a point up with onc minute into inj ury time when Patrick Kcrwick equalised to bring the game 10 exIra lime and how vital Shelley's goals proved in that time with Shane Ivors between the posts holdi ng out having only conceded I goal in the previous 120 minutes of good honest hard hurling between both teams who were well prepared fo r the encounter to leave Killenaule victors on a scoreline KillemlUle 2-21 Ballingany 3-16. FOR ALL YOUR FENCING NEEDS Memories of Slieveardagh

[ was born into a place where the big ball was king llI1d into a time when hurling \litiS a somewhat timid flower in the Hills ofSlicvcardagh. On the borders orthe Mid and hiler the West Divisions Killcn:mlc had always favoured hurling but as latc as 195 1 Ballingarry had won the TippcT1lry senior football championship. As for aspiring to hurl for Tipperary that was lert to what we almost regarded as superior beings. "Mickcdy" Tobin H neighbour of mine in 8311ydavid was regarded by us as a fine hurler. His claim to fmne was that he had once played well on fair haired Torn Ryan ofKil1cnaulc. Bob Hall had enticed one Jimsy Kelly (falher of Paul and Eoin) to begin his hurling career by lining oul as a minor with Kitlcnaulc. Another name to ring l\ bell W3S Limn O'Grady II county mi nor in the 1950s and later to become a great GAA supporter while te1leh ing in Drangan. The 60s d1lwned and Ballingarry fanned a minor alliance "Knocknagow'" with Mullinahone. Three times this fine team put it up to but failed to topple lOp class Roscrea leams who laler developed into an All lrcl:md club winning oUlfit. Tommy Brennan went on 10 win an All Ircland under 21 meda1.l-1c would still be an intluenee in junior hurling more than 20 years on. ThaI Ballingarry team Illistened the arrival on the scene of two superb underage mentors Dan O'Connor and Michael O'Donnell. Both gave hugcly to Ballingarry and arc probably the club mentors that I have admired most in my lifetime. When both passed away within months of eHeh olher in the mid eighties I thought that Ballingarry would never recover from their loss but not for the first time the lads from the "land of no surrender'" proved me wrong. Killenaule faded as 11 hurling loree in the 1960s as D1Ivins became all the rage. A hurling hotbed beeame centred on Killcnaule when the vocational schools al Mullinahone. Ballingarry and Ki][enaule closed and Seoil Ruain opened. Over the years the school was to go on to dominate schools hurling in the county. A banner across the road ncar Crohane bcfore the 1997 All Ireland final spokc volumes. It read simply O'Meara Leahy Cahill and Shelly. Ki llenaule began their comeback in the 1970s first as Young Irclands and then Eire Og. Both were combinations with Mullinahone. They challcnged Swan for supremacy in the mid eighties. So ncar and yel so far. By the end of the decade Killenaulc were rightly back in senior ranks. Two players spring to mind. Donie O'Connell who helped to end the famine and Ihe hugely talented Joe O'Dwyer. Only four teams from South Tipp won one of the 56 hurling lilies on offer in Tipperary in the I 980s.0ne of these wins was 10 be by Ballingarry at U2lB level in I 989.They were \0 improve on th is when Ballingnrry Gaels won back to back cOllmy minor "A"titles. The Ali lrel:md minor winning Tipp captain of 1996 was Ballingarrys . The previous year Paul Shelly was at comer back on the winning Tipp under 2 1 team. Eleven years later I can still hear the crunch as Dnmian Cleere was Slopped in his tracks as he went through for what would ha\'e been a wirllling goal. Liam Cahill just out of minor became an All Star. No longcr werc county hurlers superior beings to the lads of Slieveardagh. A new hurling power had nnsell to the soulh of the hills. The senior hurling stnJggJcs betwecn Ballingarry and Mullinahone dominatcd South Hurling in the decadc 1994·2004 wilh honours more or less even. Killenaule didn'l like being lell oul and won two successive county under 21 crowns before regaining thc SOlLth senior crown in 2005.The soulh final and replay of that year were wonderful games bUlmake us no wiscr as to who wll have bragging rights in the hills in 2007.A simple story illustmles hurling rivalry in Slieveardagh. When Mullinahone were on Iheir way to the county final of2002. they had 10 pass a big roadsign '"Good luck to Mullinahone from Ballingarry'".The following week on the way to the replay the sign bore an addition " For F_ s sake finish thc job this timc" In Sl ieveardagh rivals but brothers.
