+ A GUIDE TO WEDDING RINGS

The story of our wedding begins, I suppose, with the very beginning. I met David not on a blind date, not at a bar, but during a job interview. After leaving my fast-paced publishing career on the table, I was seeking a different path in the world of gardens, the great outdoors and a return to my “roots.” Looking at my work history, he questioned why I was interested in working in horticulture. I babbled on about my wish to learn all of the Latin botanical names, my desire to grow my own vegetables from seed, tend a garden and get my hands in the dirt. I thought the Tglazed look on his face meant I’d lost him in con- versation—only to discover later that he thought he just interviewed his future wife! And, we’ve not been apart since. Our life together is very full—full of muddy boots, “We both love dripping wet dogs from swims the idea of having in the pond and overfilled baskets of way-too-many friends and family heirloom tomatoes when we gathered together get a little obsessed with the seed catalogs. We both love with homegrown the idea of having friends and family gathered together with food, good music homegrown food, good music and perfect and perfect weather. That’s just what we wished for on weather.” our wedding day. Except neither of us wanted to plan a wedding. Luckily, we are blessed with incredibly giving—and encouraging—friends who offered their picture- perfect backyard. After our many months of evading wedding planning and seeking the ideal laid-back venue, neighbors Lynn and Richard Yeilding exclaimed, “Why don’t you get married here?” It was an offer just too incredible to deny—rolling hills filled with a hardwood forest, a mirror-smooth lake, an understated yet elegant cozy lake cabin and cute dogs to boot. We immediately agreed, with the pronounce- ment that it’d be “simple.” Lynn, a mother of four who hosted two of her children’s weddings this summer,

laughed with a wink. “You can try!” Simple is what we sought, but at least simply perfect is what we got. Planned in three short months with early November as our goal, we pulled together ideas of growing ingredients for the menu, using plants grown by David’s nursery for the décor, gathering loved ones for an outdoor ceremony under a grand tree and partying ’til the stars twinkled to the blues sounds of Birmingham’s Glen & Libba. It was important to me that our wedding reflect us and show our pride of place. From the invitation to the menu to the décor, we included elements that were handmade, homegrown or represent Alabama. A brilliant creative friend, Joshua Moore, and I had recently worked with an illustrator on a nature conservancy project, which naturally led to us hiring her to draw artwork for an outdoor wedding invitation. The artist incorpo- rated David’s favorite honeybees and purple mar- tins along with a hand-drawn bouquet of peonies, zinnias and hydrangeas (flowers we grew that are special to us) on eco-friendly invitations designed by Joshua. We kept the original, commissioned artwork as a keepsake that David will frame with old barn wood. We carefully planted 10 varieties of lettuces and such in the garden and tried to sweet talk our nine chickens into producing enough eggs to share my favorite Southern staple—dev- iled eggs—with our guests. Good People beer was planned for the boys during one of the biggest football days in the South.

Complete with handmade bouquets, boutionnieres, big smiles, lovable dog guests and the most glorious weather of the year, we were thrilled to exchange rings. My custom band was made to match a 1920s estate ring David purchased, and his band suits his style.
