Anton du Beke

At the age of 14, Anton du Beke gave up boxing and football and took up ballroom dancing. He won numerous amateur competitions before eventually turning pro with his long-term partner Erin Boag – then sweeping to fame on Strictly Come Dancing.

Alongside duties on the hit reality show, Anton has become a regular daytime TV guest with credits from The Wright Stuff to Countdown to Hole In The Wall, released a whole series of dance-themed books and claims often to be mistaken for the Welsh comedy actor, Rob Brydon. 2019 The

This four-storey and two-basement student hub is a hybrid of precast and in-situ Commendedconcrete. Externally, white acid-etched precast elevations feature extensively. Internally, exposed concrete is prominent throughout, contributing to the building’s low-energy, low-carbon strategy and thermal stability. The quality of both precast and in-situ concrete is exceptional, with clean, precise detailing.

Featuring an exposed concrete interior, the new Institute headquarters acts as a ‘living lab’ to showcase physics and innovative technology. Attention to detail of the panel joints, bolt-hole location and finishing, recesses and fittings is visually pleasing, with the concrete’s high thermal capacity driving the highly sustainability design.

Designed to resist 25 years of intensive testing, this unique and excellently executed structure will assist Airbus in the development of new, more efficient wings.

The Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience, Easter Elchies, Moray Nominated by Arup Owner The Macallan Distillery (The Edrington Group) Architect Rogers, Stirk Harbour + Partners Structural & Building Services Arup Engineer Main Contractor Robertson Construction Concrete Subcontractor PJ Carey Concrete plays a significant part in the 180-long × 54m-wide structure, Precast concrete Decomo complemented by the spectacular timber roof. Jointless external retaining walls up 10m high, with counterforts at 3m centres, form the cavernous space. All concrete surfaces are visually expressed, with finely polished precast concrete used as a finish in prime, public-facing areas.

The exposed concrete frame with large spans and few columns provides an open- Commendedplan flexibility to accommodate educational space, break-out areas and meeting rooms. Light-coloured polished concrete floors and board-marked concrete walls are complemented by timber panelling and masonry. Environmentally, the concrete’s thermal mass and coffered slabs form part of the passive cooling strategy.

The outstanding feature of this highly contextualised mixed-use block is the black pigmented precast cladding, which also provides thermal mass. A deep surface texture reveals the dark basalt coarse aggregate, in contrast to the dramatic smooth herringbone-pattern grooves that wrap around the frame.

Working below the 80-year-old reinforced concrete raft foundation, 62 new RC columns were cast within 1800mm-diameter shafts, which were hand dug by miners. The floors were then installed by top-down construction.

The external façade uses exposed-aggregate precast columns and spandrel panels, and is functionally independent to the exposed in-situ concrete frame within.

This 50,000 sq ft headquarters building is an exposed two-storey concrete frame. The building consists of a curved, predominantly glazed façade and 6.5m cantilevers on the two main office legs at both first floor and roof levels. The exposed concrete frame forms an integral part of the heating and cooling strategy.

New lifts, stairs and ticketing facilities – plus a 2000-tonne reinforced concrete portal underpass cast-in-situ and moved into position – connects neighbourhoods. In-situ concrete is the primary visual finish; cast-in depictions of chemical symbols create a frieze, excellent board-marked stairs span off full-height as-struck plain walls and polished exposed-aggregate walkways contrast with the ‘grey’ concrete ticket hall.

The perimeter concrete walls also act as deep beams, allowing the floor plates to cantilever past column supports. Craftsmanship of the formwork carpenters and the contractor-optimised mix design were key to the exemplar concrete finish achieved.

Completed in 1962 and one of the five important ‘modernist’ theatres in England, the 2012–2014 concrete repairs to the iconic façade were not successful. As a Grade II* listed structure, this project sympathetically replaced deteriorating concrete using a unique conservation approach to match the original bush-hammered exposed- aggregate finish.

Concrete is omnipresent, forming the structure and, where exposed, creates a highly expressive finish. Adjacent precast and in-situ elements match well. Polished exposed-aggregate slabs provide visual as well as practical surfaces.

Three concrete cores, in-situ cladding, internal in-situ walls combined with precast concrete lattice planks and cladding elements create a signature standard of high quality and innovative design and engineering.

The double-height column free space with its coffered ceiling is the main features of this church. Using concrete as a robust and versatile material, the expressed ribs create a diagonal grid to reference the vaults of traditional churches. Formwork design and detailing were paramount in producing a high-quality finish monolithic structure.
