MONDAY

#1 – The History, Science, and Art of Kaleidoscopes Monday 9:00 – 10:30 AM One day, April 27 Cost: $16 Green Hills Community Room Class limit 56

As young children, many of us had a kaleidoscope. In the early 1800s, kaleido- scopes were invented by Sir David Brewster. During “The Fancy Period” (1840-70s) they were used in architecture, wallpaper, and floor coverings. Kaleidoscopes then became inexpensive toys made from tin and cardboard. In the 1970s, kaleidoscopes were revived as finely crafted instruments. Join us for a journey to discover the history of the kaleidoscope and see samples of kaleidoscopes.

Steve and Peggy Kittelson have been creating handcrafted kaleidoscopes since 1986 with the goal to create unique and distinctive scopes that are beautiful to look at and pleasing to touch and hold. They are active educators who open their studio and give demonstrations on the magic and science of kaleidoscopes to students of all ages.

#2 – American Short Stories Monday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Six weeks, March 23 – April 27 Cost: $56 Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 32

In this class we will explore the genre of literature that is distinctly American: the short story. These condensed tales of love, betrayal, courage, and greed are mirrors of the human condition. We will discuss approximately a dozen stories and the writers who wrote them, from the 18th century to the present day. Copies of all stories will be provided to class members.

Keith Carlson has taught numerous courses for the OLLI program at Iowa State. He has spent a lifetime teaching English literature at Ames High School and is a resident of rural Boone.

OLLI SPRING CATALOG 2020 15 #3 – Introduction to Teaism Monday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM One day, May 4 Cost: $21, includes the cost of samples Horton Multipurpose Conference Room - ISU Alumni Center Class limit 25

Tea excites the imagination, sparks enlightenment, and seeds civilization: a single plant with endless diversity. Learn the myth, history, and diversity of camellia sinen- sis in this tasting-centered presentation by local tea shop owner Kristin M. Roach.

Kristin M. Roach grew up in Moline, Ill. and graduated in 2008 from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in fine art. Since moving to Ames she’s worked as a professional artist, craft pattern writer, and curator. In 2016 Roach opened Little Woods Herbs & Teas, which continues to be her primary passion. She currently serves as president of Ames Main Street.

Chuck Achter has been a public school educator for 50 years. He spent six years as a social studies teacher and coach; 32 years as a high school principal in Chaska, Minn., Ames, and Coon Rapids, Minn.; and 10 years as an ISU professor where he taught foundations of American education, educational methods, and school and community. He spent the last two years consulting on school culture.

16 OLLI SPRING CATALOG 2020 #5 – Kaleidoscopes, Mirrors, and Magic Monday 1:00 – 4:30 PM One day, April 27 Cost: $190, includes the cost of supplies Green Hills Community Room Class limit 10

This is your opportunity to build a kaleidoscope using a furnished wooden barrel (hand turned by Steve Kittelson) and precut front surface mirror. Precise mirror cutting will be demonstrated and different mirror configurations will be discussed. The kaleidoscope will have a 2-mirror system, and the pieces used to create the image will be torch–worked glass pieces, twisted color wire, beads, and found objects. If possible, there will be a demonstration of turning a wooden barrel.

Peggy and Steve Kittelson have been making kaleidoscopes for 32 years, selling their work in galleries in the U.S., Japan, at art fairs, at their studio, and online. Their work is in several museums in Japan and many private collections. Their work has been in many museum exhibits, including the American Folk Art Museum in New York City. Todd Burras has spent the past 20 years writing about nature and the outdoors, and now owns the Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop in Ames with his wife, Stephanie.

Through generative in-class writing, and group workshopping (critiquing) of pieces written at home, participants will explore techniques of writing that lend themselves to short-form memoir. Short- form memoirs, later combined, can create snapshots of a life story.

Ana McCracken’s personal essays are published in “The California Writers Club Literary Review” and the anthologies “Nothing But the Truth So Help Me God,” “The Joy of Adoption,” and “Chicken Soup for the Adopted Soul.” McCracken is busy writing a memoir about her adoption in Iowa State’s M.F.A. in creative writing and environment program. 20 OLLI SPRING CATALOG 2020 #12 – Excavation Meets Imagination: Unearthing Buried Voices Through Poetry Tuesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM One day, March 24 Cost: $16 Reiman Ballroom – ISU Alumni Center Class limit 56

What has poetry to do with deep-rooted, time-honored studies of history and theology? Allison Boyd Justus’ study of biblical theology and translation practices led her to the practice of poetry, which in turn, after several years, brought her back to biblical studies through experimentation with a midrashic approach. This lecture will illuminate relationships among the ancient Hebrew practice of midrash, trans- lation practices, and imaginative excavations of women’s stories, perspectives, and spiritual experiences.

Allison Boyd Justus is a student in Iowa State University’s M.F.A. program in creative writing and environment. Justus holds a master of arts degree in New Testament studies from Freed-Hardeman University, and she is the author of “Solstice to Solstice to Solstice: A Year of Sunrises in Poetry” (Alternating Current Press, 2017).

Is the President Above the Law? Tuesday, April 21, 3:00 – 4:30 PM Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center

The Office of Legal Counsel (part of the Department of Justice) argues that a sitting President cannot be indicted for any illegal action and that the theory of the “unitary executive” prohibits Congress and the courts from limiting Presidential powers. The Trump Administration has used these claims to assert that the President is immune from any judicial action, including responding to subpoenas. Furthermore, should he be reelected, the statute of limitations would free him from prosecution once he leaves office. Are these claims valid?

Jorgen Rasmussen, distinguished professor emeritus, was a member of the ISU Political Science Department for a quarter of a century, including a term as chair. Constitutional Law was among the courses Rasmussen taught and was one of the examination fields for his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin/Madison.

OLLI SPRING CATALOG 2020 41 Sound Stories: The World of Film Music Tuesday, April 28, 3:00 – 4:30 PM Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center

Music is an essential part of almost all modern movies, but most audience members are probably unaware of the elaborate process and artistic decisions behind the music. In this discussion we consider how film music is created, how it functions, and how it works together with the visual components to affect the viewer. By the time we are finished, participants may never watch a movie in quite the same way as they had before.

Eric McIntyre is professor of music at Grinnell College, where he directs the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra, teaches music composition courses, and teaches in Grinnell’s Liberal Arts in Prison Program. McIntyre has served as music director of the Central Iowa Symphony in Ames since 2009. An active composer, McIntyre has had his original compositions performed around the world by an array of performers and received support and awards from ASCAP, the Iowa Arts Council, the American Music Center, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Equally adept as a hornist, McIntyre was a member of the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera Orchestras and performed with the Houston Symphony. He continues to perform as a guest musician with Des Moines Symphony and Orchestra Iowa and as a chamber musician and free improviser on modern and historic natural horns and with chimeric instruments of his own creation.

A Glimpse into Supreme Court Decision-Making Tuesday, May 5, 3:00 – 4:30 PM Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center

Since most lawyers and judges are still trying to figure out how to read the Constitution, we will not attempt to do that in a 90 minute session, although we know Ames is intellectually gifted. What we will do is share with you some constitutional principles and approaches that have been articulated by the Supreme Court and followed by others. Among them: stare decisis (precedent), state vs federal constitutions, living constitution vs originalism, judicial review, weighing/balancing competing constitutional rights, and reluctance to decide a case on constitutional grounds.?

Jim Chrisinger has recently retired from a career in public service, serving in both Republican and Democratic administrations, including 10 years with the Iowa Department of Management. Chrisinger clerked for the Iowa Supreme Court and taught Constitutional Law at Iowa State. He has an undergraduate degree in history from ISU and a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

42 OLLI SPRING CATALOG 2020 Constitutional Impeachment and President Trump Tuesday, May 12, 3:00 – 4:30 PM Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center

The U.S. House of Representatives decision to proceed with drafting articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump was of historic significance. But this impeachment is problematic. First, virtually all Democrats support impeachment and almost all Republicans oppose it. Thus, the impeachment reflects our polarized politics. Second, the President has a credible argument that he did not actually commit any federal crime, unlike the Nixon and Clinton impeachments. But most experts argue that a crime is not necessary for impeachment. The potential absence of a crime, however, complicates what criteria should apply to President Trump’s actions. This presentation will seek to clarify how the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted regarding these impeachment issues in the President Trump situation.

Mark Kende is the director of the Congressionally endowed Constitutional Law Center and James Madison chair professor in constitutional law at Drake University Law School. Kende graduated from Yale University, where he received his B.A. cum laude, and received honors in the philosophy major. Later, he received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School where he was on the law review. Prior to joining academia, he clerked for a federal district court judge, and he worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago for five years. He has been a law professor for 25 years. During that time, he was selected to be a Fulbright Senior Scholar in South Africa, a visiting professor of law at the University of Paris II, and at Notre Dame Law School. He is a former chair of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Constitutional Law, and the author of Constitutional Rights in Two Worlds: South Africa and the United States (Cambridge Univ. Press).

OLLI SPRING CATALOG 2020 43 ISU COMMUNICATION STUDENT PRESENTATIONS

You’re Invited: Come Communicate with Us!

ISU students majoring in communication studies will again offer a series of programs on a variety of communication topics during the spring session of OLLI. The programs are developed as part of the requirements for students who take the communication training and development class (ComSt 319) taught by Denise Vrchota and offered each spring through the communication studies program. Prior to offering the programs for the OLLI members, the students study adult learning theories, learn to facilitate activities, and learn to organize and deliver programs to adult learners. The students choose the topics for the programs after receiving suggestions from OLLI members; however, because the students are communication majors, the topics must be related to the areas they study in their other classes. Some of you may remember completing a survey (on green paper) at the winter open house. The programs are scheduled from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. with the potential for two presentations (each presentation is one hour) each day:

• March 24 • March 31 • April 7 • April 14

At the time the catalog was printed, the exact topics were not available. The schedule of topics will be distributed in February, and descriptions will be available in the OLLI newsletter. We hope you will join us for one or all of the programs. Just like the members-only lectures, these presentations will be live online, or you can request a link to a recording. This will also be a valuable opportunity for the students to be able to see a recording of their presentations.

All student presentations will be in the Reiman Ballroom at the ISU Alumni Center. There is no cost or registration required to attend.
