1. The IQAC team played a vital role in organizing a year long programme for observing the

150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

2. The IQAC team has chalked out a programme for upgrading the Seminar Hall and accordingly placed the proposal before the Governing Body (GB).

2.15 Plan of Action by IQAC/Outcome

The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year * Plan of Action Achievements

1. To observe Swamiji’s 150th 1. A good number of programmes were undertaken in this birth anniversary throughout regard. Most important among them: (a) Prof. the year. Chittabrata Palit, eminent historian and UGC emeritus fellow delivered a lecture on Swami Vivekananda’s contribution to Indian Society. (b) Sri Shiupujan Singh, Secretary, Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari, spoke on the significance of the Chicago speech delivered by Swami Vivekananda.

Provide the details of the action taken

The UGC sanctioned a lump sum amount for construction of a seminar hall. The IQAC along with the Governing Body members made a detailed discussion on the construction and chalked out a programme of the seminar hall.

The college has core options i. e. honours courses in the subjects like English, Bengali, History, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Political Science, Journalism & Mass Communication in humanities. In science, college provides core options or honours courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Computer Science. In Commerce, Accounting and Finance is offered as the core subject or Honours course. 2. The , the affiliating University does not allow Choice Based Credit System. 2.6 Innovative processes adopted by the institution in Teaching and Learning:

Besides classroom teaching several departments of the college organized seminars and workshops for

the benefit of the students:

1. The Department of Philosophy organised a UGC sponsored International seminar on ‘Error in Epistemic & Pragmatic Sphere’. Prof. Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, University and Sri Nilanjan Das, fellow, MIT, USA were the invited speakers.

2. The K. S. Rao Memorial Lecture, like every year, was organised by the Departments of Zoology and Botany. Dr. Dipak Ranjan Mondal, DPI, Govt. of was the main speaker.

3. The Department of Economics in collaboration with Azim Premji University, Bangalore organised a seminar on Future Dimensions of Higher Education.

nd 4. The Department of Environmental Science observed the Earth day on 22 April 2013. Prof. Pranabesh Sanyal, noted environmentalist, spoke on the occasion.

5. The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication organised a UGC sponsored National Seminar on ‘The Pioneering Communicators of Pre – Independent Bengal’.

The IQAC along with the Academic Sub – Committee holds meetings with a view to improving the academic standards of the students. 3. Research, Consultancy and Extension

3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the institution

Under the strict supervision of the IQAC, the Research Guidance Cell efficiently monitored the research activities of the students of some departments. The IQAC along with the college authority constantly encourages the faculty members for research in their respective fields, which is quite evident from the number of research projects and grants received by the teachers. To add to it, the faculty members are engaged in the process of continuous publication of papers and

books. The IQAC as well as the college authorities firmly believe that research activities can enhance better teaching in the institution.

3.26 Major Activities during the year in the sphere of extension activities and Institutional Social Responsibility

BODHAYAN is an organisation, which is engaged in giving services to the mentally retarded persons. The organisation helps such persons to manufacture products like files, bags etc. The college purchased bulk files from the organisation to provide financial support to the organisation.

 The college organised a year – long programme to observe 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

 The NSS unit of the college participated in World Handicapped Day rally.

 Four volunteers of the NSS participated in the workshop on ‘First Aid’ organised by the University of Calcutta.

 The NCC unit of the college participated in the National Integration Camp in September 2012.

 Two students of the college, who happened to be NCC cadets represented the college in the Republic Day Parade on 26th January 2013 in New Delhi. The same students represented the college in the Prime Minister’s rally held on 28th January 2013.

4.2 Computerization of administration and library

1. The college offices had been supplied with a number of computers in order to enable the offices with an efficient record keeping system.

2. The college has started a full–fledged online admission system, which included submission of online form and subsequent generation of impartial merit list.

1. The college has extended the programme of giving internet connection to different departments. This measure has benefitted the departments of Zoology, Botany, Mathematics, Computer Science and Commerce.

2. In a small room adjacent to the teachers’ room a number of computers with internet connections

have been installed. This was done with the idea of enabling the teachers of humanities departments to avail themselves of internet facilities.

Criterion – V 5. Student Support and Progression

5.1 Contribution of IQAC in enhancing awareness about Student Support Services

The IQAC with the support of the college authorities helps in maintaining different students’ amenities present in the college:

1. A cheap store with a Xerox machine is run in the college campus for the students.

2. A spacious college canteen with a facility of providing meals at subsidized rates.

3. A big space near the college gate for parking of bicycles and motor bikes of the students.

4. A full size playground, which is extensively used for different sports and athletic meets. Even the

local schools and clubs take advantage of the ground in time of sports.

5. A Students’ Aid Fund for the benefit of students coming from economically backward sections.

5.2 Efforts made by the institution for tracking the progression

1. The college has maintained the system of detailed academic record of the Mid – Term and Annual Test Examinations as introduced in the previous year.

2. The Heads of the Departments maintained the practice of displaying the results of the aforesaid Examinations on the notice boards of respective departments.

3. The college also maintains a department wise attendance record of the students.

4. The Convenor, Academic Sub – Committee, in consultation with Heads of the Departments tries to maintain necessary documents related to students’ progression.

Criterion – VI

6. Governance, Leadership and Management

6.1 State the Vision and Mission of the institution

As the institution is named after the revolutionary Indian monk Swami Vivekananda, it holds his principles and ideas very high and accordingly believes “Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man”. Tomoso ma jyotirgamoyo i.e. ‘from darkness, lead us to light’ is our guiding principle, while imparting education to our students. The Institution is committed to promote education for the students coming from several walks of life. The aim of the college is not

only to impart formal education according to University Curriculum, but also to help them grow as good citizens. Finally the College is wholeheartedly committed to promote secular and progressive values. The college has the vision of raising the institution to a very high standard, so that it becomes one of the premier institutions of the country.

The avowed mission of the College is ‘Education for Empowerment’ and this mission modulates following goals and objectives like advancement of learning for personality and career development, cultivating qualities requisite for good and responsible citizenship, instilling a strong sense of commitment to human values & social justice and involvement in community life along with acquisition of academic knowledge and personal values. The college proceeds with the lofty

idea of elevating the institution to the highest standard. With a view to fulfilling this mission, several sub committees, especially the Academic Sub – Committee prepare an annual programme, essential for improving the academic standard of the college.

6.2 Does the Institution has a management Information System

The management constantly endeavours to keep itself informed about the activities related to the institution. For that purpose extensive help of computerised knowledge is sought. The students’ response and suggestions are given priority. The management accordingly try to resolve the problematic issues.

6.3 Quality improvement strategies adopted by the institution for each of the following:

6.3.1 Curriculum Development

The Institution is bound to follow the curriculum introduced by the mother University, that is, the Calcutta University. The college follows a meticulous internal evaluation system of

the students. Teachers of all department take mid – term and annual test examinations. The answer scripts are regularly shown to the students with the purpose of their comprehensive improvement. Teachers of different departments have taken part in seminars, organised to restructure the syllabi of different subjects. Some actively contributed to curriculum developments as member of Board of Studies or as member of model question bank committee.

6.3.2 Teaching and Learning

Besides classroom teaching, different departments brought experts from other institutions to deliver lectures in seminars:

1. The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication organised a UGC sponsored

National Conference on ‘Tagore and Communication’. Dr. Arunima Banerjee, JNU and the noted poet Prof. Subodh Sarkar graced the occasion with their august presence.

2. The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication organised an International Seminar on the ‘State of International Journalism’. Ms. Laura Ungar, a USA based

Journalist and Mr. Sujoy Dhar of Washington Times delivered speeches in the seminar.

3. The Department of Philosophy organised a seminar on ‘Error in Epistemic and Pragmatic Sphere’.

6.3.3 Examination and Evaluation

1. The college authority conducts class tests, mid- term tests and annual examination.

2. Detailed examination schedule for theory and practical are duly notified.

3. In the beginning of the academic session, students of each department are informed that they are to obtain minimum pass marks in Test Examination and also to have

required percentage of attendance. The same thing is also notified in the college prospectus.

6.3.4 Research and Development

The Research Guidance Cell (RGC) took immense interest in instilling research qualities among the students. Students of several departments, particularly the students of Botany,

6.3.5 Library, ICT and physical infrastructure / instrumentation

1. The central library of the college has around 39000 books (Text and Reference) along with journals and magazines.

2. Apart from these several departments maintain departmental libraries consisting mainly of

textbooks along with some reference books. Students of the departments like Zoology, Botany and Environmental Science maintain separate students’ libraries of their own. Some teachers also contributed books to the library.

3. The students are issued plastic identity cards with scanned photographs and it is essential to produce the card at the gate in time of entering the college.

4. The college introduced a system of issuing identity cards to all the employees (both teaching and non-teaching) with scanned photograph and signatures.

6.3.6 Human Resource Management

A. Students: The students are encouraged to take part in cultural and academic activities as well as in various types of sports. Moreover, writing skills, skill of eloquence and public speaking as well as verbal interaction with eminent academicians in the seminars are highly appreciated by the College.

B. Teachers : The teachers of the College are in constant touch with the students in exercising their academic duties. Their involvement is not only confined to University Curriculum, but they also encourage the students to take part in cultural and social activities and sports as well. The teachers are also the members of different academic and administrative committees and they come forward to help the administration in many ways. However, maintenance of a high academic standard gets

priority over everything.

6.3.7 Faculty and Staff recruitment

The college has no power to recruit permanent teachers. The names of the teachers of different departments are recommended by the West Bengal College Service Commission and accordingly the

Governing Body of the college issues appointment letter to the recommended persons. Still the college sometimes faces shortage of teachers. To overcome the problem, college recruits part time teachers, contractual whole time teachers and guest teachers. In most of the cases, subject experts from affiliating university preside over the interview board, along with the Principal and Academic Committee Convener. The committee is formed in accordance with the circular issued by Education Directorate, Government of West Bengal. In such recruitments the panel is made following the marking pattern of the West Bengal College Service Commission.

The permanent members of non-teaching staff are recruited by an interview board comprising the Principal and the Bursar. The names of the selected members are to be approved by

the office of the Directorate of Public Instruction. However, to overcome the problem of shortage of staff the college also recruits temporary members of non-teaching staff through an interview. The interview board, apart from the Principal and Bursar also includes an external member of the

Governing Body.

6.3.9 Admission of Students

Transparency is the key word in the process of admission in the College. It is the earnest endeavor of the college authority to take meritorious and deserving candidates. Students are admitted to the institution in accordance with the marks they obtained in the school leaving examination. In the admission process of the honours students, the college indulges in a unique practice. Their aggregate is added to the subject marks in which the candidate desires to study honours course. The added figure is called the norm total, which is the basis of the merit list. The seats are filled in in accordance with the number of seats sanctioned by the university in different subjects. The college has started a full–fledged online admission system, which includes

submission of online form and subsequent generation of impartial merit list.

6.4 Welfare schemes for

Teachers The college has introduced a system of granting Maternity Leave with full pay for the Female Part – time teachers and they enjoy the tenure of leave as per government rules. College indulges in the practice of giving festival advance of Rs. 10,000/- to the teachers at 0 % interest rate. The College Cooperative Credit Society sanctions loan to the teachers at competitive interest rates.

Non – The permanent members of non – teaching staff also get similar facility. The temporary Teaching members of non – teaching staff however get an ex – gratia payment equal to their one Staff month’s pay. The members of the non – teaching staff enjoy same benefit as the teachers from the College Cooperative Credit Society.

Students The college has a Students’ Welfare Department, which maintains a Poor Students’ Aid Fund. Under the supervision of a teacher, poor students are immensely benefitted by the fund. In fact, the Teachers’ Council makes an annual contribution of Rs. 10,000/- to this fund. Apart from this, the Principal has introduced a system of issuing full free or partially free concession in tuition fees to the meritorious students coming from economically backward sections. They are to fill up a form, available in the college offices and accordingly, the Principal sanctions financial aid to the students.

A general alumni association of the college does not exist. However, Departments of

Economics, Botany and Environmental Science organise annual meet of the alumni of their respective departments. Alumni association of the Department of Botany released a

collection of photographs, named ‘Back to Nature’. Later on the collection was exhibited in a photographic exhibition.

The teachers of different departments keep themselves in constant touch with parents of the students. Particularly, those who are laggards and who do not have the required attendance and marks in the final examination, their parents are called in by the Head of the Department to discuss the problems of their wards

6.14 Initiatives taken by the institution to make the campus eco-friendly

1. The college has built up Sushruta Udyan, a medicinal plant garden within the college premises. The garden had been named after the doyen of Indian medical sciences in

ancient India, Sushruta. In fact, the scheme has been executed with the financial help of Dr. Alokananda Jana Mukherjee, Department of Botany. 2. Like every year, this year also, the Environmental Science Department observed the Earth day and Prof. Pranabesh Sanyal, noted Environmentalist, graced the occasion as the chief speaker. 3. A seminar on proper utilization of water was held by the Department of Environmental Science. The seminar was organised with the intention of proper conservation of water even with in the college campus.

7.1 Innovations introduced during this academic year which have created a positive impact on the functioning of the institution. Give details.

1. The department of Physics celebrated Science Day on 28th Feb 2013 by visiting the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, an institution of Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. Of India. The students of the department visited different laboratories of VECC and participated in the quiz competition. The students were accompanied by Dr.

Arvind Pan, Department of Physics.

2. The Department of Philosophy visited Swamiji’s Residence, Jain Temple, Thakurbari. The students were accompanied by Prof. Aditi Das and Dr. Madhu Kapur.

3. The college in collaboration with American Centre observed National Library Day celebration.

4. The Photojournalism and Videography Unit of the college observed World Photography Day. The same unit also organised an excursion tour in Rajgir, Bihar.

5. The Department of History organised an educational excursion of the students at

Bishnupur, Bankura.

1. The college had planned a construction of a medicinal plant garden and accordingly the

garden was built and named Sushruta Udyan.

2. Remaining true to the glorious heritage of Bengal Renaissance, two busts – one of Pandit

Iswarchandra Vidyasagar and another of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore was installed in our college campus.

3. Since this whole year was devoted to the 150th birth centenary celebration of Swamiji, a closing ceremony was held on 12th Jan 2013. Apart from musical programmes, drama,

lectures on Swamiji, other programmes like quiz competition were also held.

4. The Department of Mathematics organised a unique programme, MATHEMANIA, a quiz competition on mathematics, probably the first of its kind in Kolkata. This programme was

organised to observe 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujam, the greatest Indian Mathematician. 7.3 Give two Best Practices of the institution (please see the format in the NAAC Self-study Manuals)

1. The college organised a Sensitivity/ Awareness/ Motivation Workshop under Capacity Building Women Managers Scheme (CBWMS) of the UGC. This was an illuminating and prestigious programme and Ms. Padma Ramchandran, Retired IAS, member, National Consultative Committee, CBWMS, UGC graced the occasion with her august presence. Apart

from Bengal, participants from neighbouring provinces like Jharkhand and Odisha also joined the programme.

2. The students of the college successfully organised the Photography & Painting Exhibition in Gallery Gold, Kolkata. It was a unique display of glorious achievements of the students of

the college. The programme was attended by eminent personalities like Sri Jayanta Shaw, Chief Photographer, Ei Samay and Sri Debasish Biswas, Inspector of colleges, University of Calcutta.

7.4 Contribution to environmental awareness / protection

1. Students of the Department of Environmental Science visited Charayal Canal, Joka. The idea behind the visit was to make the students acquainted with nature and natural processes.

2. Students of the college visited East Calcutta Wetland and Dhapa dumping ground. The

motive was to make the students aware of urban waste management including recycling and reuse.

3. The NSS unit arranged special camp at Kalyan Nagar, Joka. Their activities were village survey, awareness campaign, water–testing and sit and draw competition on environmental issues.

1. Existence of seminar class room and departmental library for the students of all the Honours departments.

2. Existence of a Poor Students’ Aid Fund for helping the economically backward students.

3. There is a system of rewarding the meritorious students in the Annual Prize giving ceremony.

4. A cheap store with facility of photocopy inside the college premises.

Target/Challenges:

1. The college is already suffering from shortage of teachers. To meet the challenge the college is continuously engaged in recruiting part time teachers.

2. The college aspires to elevate the standard of teaching and learning to a higher level. It is the aim of the institution to promote an academic atmosphere, conducive to better teaching and learning.

3. The college intends to enforce strict discipline among the students and to redress all their grievances. It is the firm belief of the institution that redressal of grievances is the only prophylactic against student unrest.

4. The college proceeds with the aim of making it an ideal institution which aspires to inculcate human values among the students in the days of unbridled competition and consumerism.

The teachers of different departments keep themselves in constant touch with the students throughout the academic year. Apart from teaching they try to solve certain personal and psychological problems of the students through counselling and discussions. The answer scripts of the class tests are shown to the students. The teachers offer them with suggestions for further improvement. The students, whose performances are far from being satisfactory, are taken special care by the teachers of the concerned departments. After the publication of the result of college examination the parents of the underperformed students are called and consulted. The teachers try to find out the roots of weakness of the students in the subject. Departments take verbal students’ feedback for overall improvement.
