Morten Andersen Morten Andersen entered the National Football League as the fourth round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints in 1982. He left the game 25 seasons later as the most prolific scorer in league history. Following a strike-shortened rookie season, Andersen kicked into high gear in his second season as he netted 91 points for New Orleans in 1983. It marked the first of 22 seasons in which he recorded 90 points or more. He topped the 100-point total 14 times in his career. The first occasion of reaching the century mark came in 1985 when he connected on 31 of 35 field goals and added 27 extra points for 120 points. For his efforts, he earned the first of seven Pro Bowl nominations and was also named first-team All-Pro for the first of five times. After 13 seasons in New Orleans and ranking as the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, Andersen joined the Atlanta Falcons in 1995 and eventually became that team’s career scoring leader. He recorded a spectacular season his first year in Atlanta when he scored a career-high 122 points that included a then-NFL record for most 50-yard field goals in a season (8). On Dec. 10, 1995, in a 19-14 win over his former team the Saints, he made NFL history when he became the first kicker ever to convert three field goals of 50 yards or longer in the same game. Andersen kicked for the Falcons for six seasons before continuing his reliable scoring with the New York Giants (2001), Kansas City Chiefs (2002-03), and Minnesota Vikings (2004). In 2006 he was lured out of retirement by Atlanta and finished his career with two more campaigns with the Falcons. Among the most notable league records he set were career points (2,544), most field goals (565), and games played (382). In addition, his 40 field goals of 50 yards or longer were the most in NFL history at his retirement. He is one of the rare players to be named to two NFL All-Decade Teams (1980s and 1990s). In all, he converted 565 of 709 field goal attempts and 849 of 859 point-after-attempts. He led his teams in scoring 22 times and led the NFC in 1992. Andersen led the NFL in field goals in 1987, and topped all conference kickers in that category in 1985, 1987, and 1995. No. 3 (1994) PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TOP TWENTY SCORERS CANTON, OHIO – Nick Lowery of the Kansas City Chiefs registered another strong season in 1993 to continue his climb in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Top Twenty scoring display. One of the biggest attention-getters at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Top Twenty display lists in an attractive, four-sided, translited pylon the leading lifetime statistical leaders in rushing, receiving, passing and scoring. All four sides of the display are updated weekly throughout every NFL season. The Hall of Fame listings differ from all other similar rankings in that statistics from the All-America Football Conference are included as well as those from the American and National Football Leagues. Among the Top Twenty scorers, only Lou Groza of the Cleveland Browns played in the AAFC. Counting his four years in the AAFC, Groza ranks third all-time with 1,608 points. Without his 259 points that came in the AAFC, Groza would be No. 9. Lowery’s 106-point output in 1993 allowed him to jump four places to No. 4 among the scoring elite. The 14-year NFL veteran now trails only three Hall of Famers – George Blanda, Jan Stenerud and Groza. Several other kickers active during the 1993 NFL season advanced among the upper echelon of players ranked in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Top Twenty scoring display. Like fine wine, 13-season veteran Eddie Murray seems to get better with age. He joined the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3 of the season and booted a career-best 122 points to move him three places into 10th place.

Eleven years ago he stopped coming home to his wife and four children. The youngest was 6 months old. He had lost part of his memory and still complains about the constant howling in his head from a concussive whomp. He has filed for bankruptcy and faced at least six civil judgments or liens. At some point he began using a different name. There might be a sinister reason to take on an alias, or perhaps he simply grew tired of people asking if he was that Bjorn Nittmo. Yes, he’s the same guy David Letterman introduced in 1989 as “the only Bjorn Nittmo in the New Jersey phonebook.” In actuality he’s the only Bjorn Nittmo in the world, though he is more peculiar than even that. Nittmo was the left-footed, southern-drawled, Swedish placekicker the media treated like a geegaw from a Cracker Barrel store.

A fairly straightforward definition. Most fans know a safety when they see one, despite there being numerous types. But when they happen, its like an electric shock. The responses range from “What? So what’s the score now?” to “Better get another beer and some pretzels. This thing’s getting complicated.” But I wanted to look a little deeper. How many safeties have there been in the NFL? What are the types? What is their effect on a game? Can it be measured? I had never seen an analysis of the safety, so I decided to do one myself. My interest was sparked while reviewing files for the PFRA’s Linescore Project. In a 1965 Giants-Cardinals game I saw the following entry for an individual score: StL – Team Safety. Team Safety? Huh? Did the entire Cardinals defense tackle Tucker Fredrickson in his end zone? After a trip to the library revealed the answer, I kept thinking about how devastating a safety can be. You give up possession, give your opponent 2 points, and then you have to punt the ball from your own 20, giving your opponent good, if not excellent, field position.

That day, the National Football League awarded its 15th franchise to the city, marking an end to a long struggle by the Georgia capital city to obtain a professional football team. The franchise was awarded to 41-year-old Rankin M. Smith, a successful life insurance executive, for $8.5 million. One of Smith’s first orders of business was to announce a contest to provide a nickname for the new team. The name “Falcons” was suggested by many, but a school teacher from Griffin, Ga. was declared the winner. “The Falcon is proud and dignified,” she wrote, “with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition.” Excited Georgia fans showed their enthusiasm and appreciation by buying season tickets in record numbers. By Christmas Eve, when the Falcons cut off a brief 54-day ticket sale requiring almost no promotion, an NFL record had been established for a new team with the sale of 45,000 season tickets. Minnesota was the previous record-holder with 26,000 sales in 1961. Midway through the ticket campaign, the Falcons participated in their first NFL draft on November 27, 1965. Their first pick was an Outland Trophy-winning linebacker from the University of Texas, Tommy Nobis. Nobis was also drafted by Houston of the American Football League but he signed a Falcons contract on December 14.

    STREAKING INTO 2007 BRETT FAVRE, Green Bay, has passed for 3,000 yards in a season 15 times in his 16-year career and can extend his NFL- record streak with another 3,000-yard season. Favre also holds the record for the most consecutive seasons with 3,000 passing yards with 15 (active). PEYTON MANNING, Indianapolis, needs 25 touchdown passes to become the first player in NFL history to throw 25 touchdown passes in 10 consecutive seasons. He is the only player to have nine consecutive seasons with 25 touchdown passes. Manning has passed for 3,000 yards in each of the past nine seasons and can surpass Dan Marino (9) for the second-longest streak of consecutive 3,000-yard seasons. Manning is the only player in NFL history to start a career with nine consecutive 3,000- yard seasons. LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON, San Diego, needs 10 rushing touchdowns to extend his NFL-record streak of consecutive seasons to begin a career with 10 rushing touchdowns to seven. Tomlinson needs 1,200 rushing yards to join Eric Dickerson (1983-89) as the only players in NFL history to begin a career with seven 1,200-yard rushing seasons. MARVIN HARRISON, Indianapolis, needs 10 receiving touchdowns to become the first player in NFL history with nine consecutive seasons with at least 10 receiving touchdowns. Harrison is the only player to accomplish the feat in eight straight seasons. Harrison needs 80 receptions to become the first player in NFL history with nine consecutive 80-reception seasons. He is currently tied with Jerry Rice (8) for the most such consecutive seasons.
