2 Notes from the Editor

That was a hot one! Thank you to everyone who turned out in the extremely hot sun for this year’s fete. It was good to see so many faces. One chap said his Dad used to bring him to Badingham Fete when he was a boy - he remembered winning a goldfish. This time he won a tennis ball launcher for the dog he doesn’t have!

We would have loved to have some more sideshows and games at the fete but to do that we need extra pairs of hands. If you can give us a couple of hours of your time next year, it would be much appreciated. To try to increase numbers attending, and avoid organisers clashing dates, several local villages are looking at working together to publicise events. You will find details in this issue of regular events in and but several other villages are keen to get involved - perhaps leading to a pull-out diary section for each parish’s magazine. Earlier this year, Dennington Tuesday Tots 11.30 - 12 noon at Badingham Shop & Café cancelled a fund-raising quiz after finding Badingham had an event the same night. If your group is planning an event, could you let me know as early as possible? We have some new adverts this month - thanks to all our advertisers for supporting our print costs. I am of a mind to standardise adverts in the future, so we have fewer pages of adverts. What do you think? With best wishes, Tish Don’t forget to tell Carl when you have news or events that

The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badingham by the Badingham Community Council Registered Charity No. 274549 The Editor’s decision on whether or where to place material is final. While every effort is made to check information published, the BCC does not endorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine. E.O.E.

3 BADINGHAM

What a weather contrast for the 2017 Summer Fete from 2016. Last year cold, grey and dreary, this year almost too hot – the weather is something we cannot order, unfortunately. A huge thank you to everyone who helped, baked, setup, manned a stall, donated prizes or who came along and supported us. The hardest task is setting up and taking down for the fete, moving tables and chairs from the village hall to the pub and back again, and erecting the tents. This band of helpers were invaluable. They worked so hard in hot weather – thank you seems inadequate for all your hard work. The fete afternoon was so hot even the bowls competition was cancelled. It was sweltering for the team manning the BBQ and noticeably fewer cups of tea were sold this year. Thanks to Rob who organised the Bale Race. Congratulations to our winners - Ben Newton in the senior race and Lucas Foster for the juniors. Finally a huge thank you to Mark and Lisa who provide such a superb venue, sponsor the prizes for the Bale Race and help in every way possible. This year’s fete raised just short of £280 for the BCC, with Badingham Church, Maypole and Badingham Shop and Café raising funds from their own stalls. If you have any ideas for future fetes or village activities please contact me or one of our committee members. The BCC were invited to the Badingham Shop and Café for the presentation of a £5000 award won by this fantastic community facility. It was so friendly and welcoming with delicious refreshments. So many people are happy to give their time to staff the shop and offer a warm welcome to new helpers, whether they live in Badingham or elsewhere. The BCC wishes everyone who works so hard continued success in this venture. Finally, the BCC wish all residents and their families a great summer. Pauline Skevington, Chairman 602542

Ben Newton is aiming to get his Scouting Explorer Belt Challenge. This involves many activities which he will be involved in in Poland in 2018. It will be an incredible experience for him and other Scouts. The BCC have given Ben a donation towards sponsorship for the Challenge, and also Scout Hut. We will look forward to hearing about his incredible journey when he has completed the Challenge. Good luck Ben, from all the Committee Members of the BCC Wynne Willey

6 WORKING TOGETHER AWARDS FUND

Many of you will be aware that we have been given £5,000 from the Working Together Awards Fund; this is fantastic news for Badingham. Although the award was gained through a bid submitted by our shop and café (thanks to Tanya!), the money is to be spent so that it has a long term benefit to our community. This is a wonderful windfall for our village and we want to treat it as such and share it among various projects. We have therefore set up a small panel of people who will make the decision about which ideas we can support. If you have any requests that you think will add value to our village, big or small, please contact Karen (638061) for details of how to apply. In essence we will need to know a description of the need, how it will benefit the village and the cost. How lucky are we to live here?

Where is the summer going? We’ve certainly been enjoying some fabulous weather and we’ve seen plenty of eating and socialising in the shop & café too. Thank you for your wonderful continued support! Work on the new garden area is progressing and if you’ve walked past us on Low Street you’ll have seen the flourishing grass and flower beds along with some tasty-looking tomato plants and herbs that are finding their way into our dishes. We also have a gorgeous new wooden table and matching benches outside the shop. They were made by the talented Tom Clark and they create an inviting seating area for a spot of food and drink in the fresh air, so do come and see for yourselves. You might be tempted by one of our special salads … the summer menu has been a big hit and Tanya, assisted by Marion, Gillian and Martin, have been doing us proud creating a different salad every day. If you’d like to see what’s on offer pop onto our Facebook page - Badingham Village Shop and Café - to see the daily picture that she posts there. Our regular opening on the first Sunday of each month continues to be very popular. Cream teas and homemade cakes are always a winner and you’re helping to ensure this 3pm to 5pm slot is a great time to open. Why not join us at the next one - on August 6th - or the one after that on September 3rd. If you’re a reader of the local About Fram magazine you may have seen us in Issue 14 when the shop & café appeared in the About Taste pages. It’s always exciting to receive press coverage for our very special venture. And don’t forget there’s always an appealing selection of crafts and produce on the shelves - perfect for finding something a bit different either for yourself or as a gift.

10 Looking ahead! We are repeating two very special events this year after their inaugural success last year. An Afternoon Tea in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support will take place on Friday 29th September. Tickets will once again be available from the shop so keep an eye out for those as numbers will be limited. We will also be running a Christmas Fair again to offer an opportunity for purchasing handmade crafts and goodies. This will take place on Friday 10th November and will feature a wide range of local crafts which make wonderful gifts. Seasonal refreshments will be available too. Pop both dates in your diary now! Stop the press! Here’s something to look out for… we’re planning a 2018 calendar featuring recipes used in the café. Calendars make great gifts and this will definitely be unique! More details available later. Fancy helping out? We’re so fortunate to have a wonderful band of volunteers keeping our shop & café going. Many are from Badingham itself but we’re delighted that a number of fellow enthusiasts from surrounding villages are involved too. Volunteering in the shop & café is a fun, sociable and rewarding way to spend a couple of hours. We’ve welcomed some new helpers to our team recently but there is always room for more. If you could spare a few hours on an occasional or regular basis your time would be much appreciated and you would also be helping to ensure the continued success of our fabulous community gathering place. Training is provided - along with plenty of laughter! To find out more please contact Karen on 638061.

16 Thank you to everyone who is letting me know when they spot a bird which needs adding to our list. We’ve nearly reached 70 different birds. Which ones can you tick off the list?

Keep your eyes peeled for summer and autumn viistors and let me know what you see. Janet has spotted a red kite again and Mike has found bee orchids - it has been another good year for finding bee orchids and pyramidal orchids, often on rough ground and beside the road. Is it a red kite or a buzzard? The most obvious difference is the tail - the buzzard has a fan tail while the kite’s is triangular with sharp points. The buzzard is mostly brown, varying from pale to dark. The Red Kite is brightly patterned. You might also see differences in their flight patterns with the buzzard flapping its wings more often.

The defibrillator will not apply an electric shock if not needed

You will have support from the 999 operator while you are waiting for the ambulance

There was a good turn out for the CPR training shortly after the defibrillator was installed outside the Village Hall in late 2013. If you would like a repeat demo please contact one of the BCC and they can guage the level of interest.

I see Bruisyard and Dennington, who have only recently installed defibrillators, are taking different approaches - Bruisyard is offering open training sessions while Dennington is training 24 people to be on call to help in an emergency.

Harvest is now in full swing. Police are asking motorists to be patient and not take risks on the road during the next couple of months as farmers bring in the harvest and prepare the fields for next year. Keep your distance, be cautious when overtaking and be aware that slow moving vehicles may turn into fields at any moment.

26 Dr Dan Poulter MP Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North

Undoubtedly, the best part of my week is coming home to Suffolk on a Thursday evening and leaving behind all of the stresses and pressures of a week in Parliament, not to mention the congestion of London behind. Returning home to Suffolk makes me really appreciate all that is special about this county – its rural character, great sense of community spirit and vibrant market towns. Indeed only a few weeks ago, I was delighted to come together with my fellow Parliamentary colleagues from Suffolk to celebrate the first ever Suffolk Day. Here in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, we are incredibly lucky to have a number of bustling market towns, all surrounded by rolling countryside and Suffolk’s famous wide- open skies. Indeed, Suffolk’s natural landscape has inspired writers, artists and musicians for centuries – Constable, Munnings and Britten to name a few, but of course more recently our own Ed Sheeran was inspired to write about Framlingham’s “Castle on the Hill.” With such a vibrant, growing economy, and outstanding transport links, it’s no wonder that so many major businesses and small rural start-ups are choosing to make Suffolk their home. However I am becoming increasingly concerned about some of the inappropriately large planning applications that are being submitted to our local council planning committees. One of the reasons that so many of us choose to live in Suffolk is because of its rural heritage and our beautiful countryside, and whilst we would all agree that we need an appropriate level of small scale development and affordable homes to help support young families to continue to live and work in Suffolk, none of us wants to see our countryside destroyed by inappropriate over-development. Planning is, of course, a local matter decided by our local councils and when deciding planning policy, where there should be new businesses and homes, it’s important that our local councils take an evidence based approach, and always prioritise brownfield sites over building on the countryside. That is why it is so important for our local councils to make sure they have a local development framework and land supply plan in place, to discourage inappropriate development. I will continue to work closely with our local councillors to ensure that we protect the rural nature and integrity of Suffolk’s towns and villages and will always stand up for the best interests of local residents in fighting inappropriate planning applications.
