  • A's News Clips, Monday, November 7, 2011 Seattle Prospects Lead
A’s News Clips, Monday, November 7, 2011 Seattle prospects lead West to Rising Stars win Royals farmhands also contribute in AFL showcase By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The game could not been more appropriately named. It definitely lived up to its billing. Several of the top prospects in the game shone bright Saturday as the West Division powered past the East Division, 11-2, in the sixth annual Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game at Surprise Stadium. It was a night of hits, misses, strikes and surprises. And stars, of course. The highly anticipated showdown on the mound between the East's Gerrit Cole (Pittsburgh), the first overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, and the West's Danny Hultzen (Seattle), the second overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, was overshadowed by the West's offensive onslaught, led by Seattle shortstop prospect Nick Franklin. Franklin, selected in the first round in 2009 by Seattle, finished 4-for-5 with a home run on a memorable night in Arizona. Franklin's four hits, two doubles, four RBIs and three extra-base hits all set new Rising Stars Game records. His team finished with 16 hits in the game. "It was really fun," Franklin said. "We had some fans and were enjoying the experience beforehand. We went out there to have a good time and started to put some runs on the board. We started having some fun in the dugout, and it carried over." Hultzen did his part, and there's no doubt that the front office in Seattle is feeling content right about now.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

A’s News Clips, Friday, February 10, 2012 Billy Beane to attend Oscars to back 'Moneyball' Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle Brad Pitt was nominated for an Academy Award as best actor for playing A's general manager Billy Beane in "Moneyball." And Beane will be there in person to cheer Pitt on, he said. Beane and his wife, Tara, plan to attend the Oscars on Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. "I'm going," Beane said by phone. "It will be fun. I'm excited for Brad, and I know how much time and effort he put into it. "Of course, absolutely I'm rooting for him. Not me. It's got nothing to do with me. It's all about Brad. He's a great guy, and I do want him to win for his sake, not for me. He's the one who put himself on the line. He's one of the producers, and he was the driving force behind getting the movie made. Anything he gets, he deserves." Beane said his wife is also excited, although nervous about the preparations, and Beane is hoping his daughter, Casey, who attends college in Ohio, can attend; she is portrayed in the movie and is a significant figure in the plot. Although he helped with some "Moneyball" publicity before the premiere in September, Beane has tried to stay in the background as much as possible. The Oscars, though, are special, and the fact that "Moneyball" also was nominated for best picture is a reward for everyone who worked on the film, Beane said.
