AND FINALLY

I just have to thank the rest of the board of directors for their generous “retirement” gift of the Elad S2 SDR. Over the past fifty years I’ve owned (and modified) more FM receivers and tuners then I can count. I’ve had them all, or close to it. I’m not joking when I say that the Elad SDR is the best receiver for FM that I’ve ever owned, and that includes the XDR-F1HD. This receiver has everything a DXer would want in a receiver. But it doesn’t have HD. But then, who cares about HD anyway. Thanks Greg, Keith and Doug. CU next month.

NEWS ITEM UPDATE: Back in November 2013, we had a NEWS ITEM concerning KIMI 107.9 Humboldt, NE. The station was originally licensed for 6.1 kW-V/82 m at 40-13-55/95-58-17. They were granted a CP to move to 107.7 with 50 kW/124 m at 40-56-56/95-45-28 Class C2, plus change City-of-License to Sidney, Iowa. After construction of the tower and antenna was completed, and KIMI was conducting Program Tests, the Federal Aviation Administration intervened. Their concerns the new transmitter’s location being only 12 miles away from Offutt AFB at Bellevue, Nebraska, and the new facility, being inline with Runway 30's final approach, would cause interference to the Instrument Landing System (ILS) frequency (109.5) leading aircraft to Offutt's Runway 30. KIMI then operated with an STA with 500 Watts from the new tower. The FCC has now issued a modification to the CP downgrading the power to 13 kW (they added H polarization) at 124 m Class C3 at the new site. In addition, KIMI has changed the City-of-License to Malvern. At this time . . . that’s the latest scoop.

Madison- DX Get-Together

The 21st annual Madison-Milwaukee Get-together for DXers and Radio Enthusiasts returns to Madison this year, after the highly successful gathering in Oak Creek, WI last year. This year's event will be held on Saturday, August 16 from 1:00 to 11:00 PM. The WTFDA's Bill and Nina Dvorak are this year's hosts, and the location will be at their home, 3358 Ridgeway Avenue, Madison WI 53704-4327.

This all-band event has for many years been a popular destination for Upper Midwest WTFDA members. In fact, if you would like to get a little flavor of a recent GTG (and see who from the WTFDA attended), there is a recap of the 2012 event in the October VUD of that year, pages 46-47.

For more information on this year's event, please e-mail Bill at [email protected] (please include "Madison DX GTG" in the subject line), write him at the above address or phone him at 608-244-5497.

We hope to see you in Madison on August 16!

The Editor’s Note

Outside of some cameo appearances, the 2014 E-skip season looks to be close to completion at this point, and although it had its moments, below average activity overall would be its most conclusive verdict. As often can be the case, early July had the most Es activity, with a major opening on July 6 producing hours of high MUF Es in the middle portion of the continent and eventually moving westward. There were some more unusual endpoints reported (at least compared to recent years) throughout the month, including fairly strong openings on the 15th between the Canadian Maritimes and the Northern Great Lakes, and the Pacific Northwest and the Canadian Prairies. Overall though, every time it seemed like the season was about to get into a “groove”, it wobbled off the proverbial rails. There’s always next year!

This column goes to press as one of the stronger tropo events in quite some time has been ongoing across the mid-south into the Great Lakes. Paths reported on the 24th through 26th include from IL to AL and GA, KY to NC and VA, and MI and Ontario to AL and MS. The eastern half of the continent has been embedded in an overall cool weather pattern for this time of year, but as brief infiltrations of warm air filter in out ahead of the seemingly endless parade of incoming cool fronts, there may be more chances ahead for good tropo as we head into August.

Glenn Hauser As for HSN, what in the world is the point of putting PO Box 1684 it on this LPTV, when it is also on RF 50 Ion's Enid, OK 73702 fullpower 62.6 in OKC?? So I still don't know what programming is supposed to be on 21.3 and 21.4 [email protected] from KTOU. Who owns this sorry excuse for a TV http://www.worldofradio.com station, anyway? FCC TV Query shows Mako all times and dates strictly UT = 5 hours ahead of Communications LLC, in Corpus Christi TX. CDT, 6 hours ahead of CST Had almost forgotten, but previously logged KTOU ** OKLAHOMA. Area tropo enhancement brings on 21 with HSN as in DXLDs 10-30, 11-03, 11-06, RF21, June 24 at 1412 UT. 11-07, 11-09, 11-23 shortly after their DTV HSN is decoding with antenna south; what's this?! transition. NO PSIP ID, just blank for 21-1, but has three more also blank: 21-2 with religious talk by FRANCES on While I have this in from OKC, I also check the the set, only clue being an email address to other listed LP channels: ``bad `` signals on 19, 36, JSM.org; 21-3 is black with ``No video input`` and 45, 46 (Norman) --- of course could be from rapid digital clock in the UL including frames somewhere else like 45 Tulsa or Wichita; and NO zipping by, just like we sometimes see on Enid signals on 17, 41, 48 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX public access TV, like 16:21:28.25 etc. (not the LISTENING DIGEST) current time but the number of hours+accumulating that there has been NVI!) However, there is JBA ** OKLAHOMA. RF 26, June 24 at 1413 UT, modulation, can't make it out, but sounds like the KTENNBC on PSIP as 10-1, i.e. Ada`s station fully modulated 21-4 with an ad for mops & which is rarely seen here, altho nor far beyond buckets. W9WI.com reveals what this is: KTOU-LD, OKC. Also KTEN-CW as 10-2. W9WI.com also has 4 kW ERP in OKC, but he has only 21.1 with HSN. ABC on 10-3, but I didn't find it. Back in the day on analog 10 only, KTEN was a joint ABC/NBC JSM means Ministries, but the affiliate which led to all kinds of scheduling sinful bawler's TV channel is called SBN = Sonlife problems, especially prime-time. Broadcasting Network. So I enter an OKC zipcode in the Channel Finder, Same market for CBS is KXII-12, originally http://jsm.org/channelfinder.html and what do I get? Ardmore but today listed only under Sherman TX Only cable and satellite providers! They are so across the river; now only a bad signal from it(?) incompetent they don't even know, or want us to still on RF-12. Transmitter site is still in OK between know that they are on air 21.2 in OKC. Ardmore and Durant north of Lake Texoma (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

AUGUST 2014 ··· 17 ··· COAST TO COAST TV DX Sporadic E, analog TV DX June 24, UT: lettering in a rectangular block on the bottom side of the square; during a ghosty movie; 0028 ads, 1830 check, no DX, but: including mention of ``en ambas Californias`` which is a dead giveaway for XHBC, and Notivisa promo, 2055 on 2, 3, 4, now there are some signals, CCI, which also is. more or less from the southwest 0025 on 2, also something on this channel; 0035 2103 on 4, novela? with Azteca-13 bug UR; loud Spanish, Televisa-2 star bug in LR with game(?) audio show, and nothing on 3 at this time. No more monitoring this evening (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX 2104 on 3, World Cup football LISTENING DIGEST)

2105 on 5 and weaker 6, algo video ** MEXICO. Sporadic E opening, UT June 30:

As this point FM DX may be in, so switch to that on 0044 on 2, from WSW in Spanish, novela, Televisa the porch; see U S A. After some FL stations fade net-2 star bug LR out, back to TV: 0058 on 2, now heavy CCI here 2140 on 2, CCI, Spanish from south and algo on 3 0104 on 2, Gala swirl bug in LR, i.e. Televisa net-9 2155 on 2, Televisa Espectáculos, from SSW? 0105 on 4, local? Music show; Azteca-13 bug in UR Clock in UR (these two typical of Hermosillo, Sonora); after a SW/FM monitoring break, back to TV: 2159 on 2, clip of Patrick Stewart guesting on Jimmy Fallon, in squeeze-o-vision 0143 on 2, video from one, audio from another; Gala net-9 promo 2200 on 2, entertainment magazine, clock in UR says 17:00 = CDT; no bug visible in LR; algo in LL 0144 on 3, ad for Q resort; glimpse of Stars & Stripes, maybe aimed at Americans for July 4th 2202 on 2, tentatively Gala swirl bug in LR (later seen definitely on XHBC Mexicali)

2250 on 2, soccer fades in weakly 0145 on 4, algo, MUF up to here; soon see Televisa-2 star bug LR, and lucky!!! Just before 2302 on 2, ads, Azteca-7 Mundial promo (which 0146, also white super local ID upper left: could be on Azteca-13), CANAL 4 Cámara de Diputados federal PSA; nothing more. LOS MOCHIS, SINALOA 29-06-14 More feeble Es, June 25, UT: Of course, came and went too quickly to get a photo. Unusual for these to include the date? I have 1603 on 2, algo from south CCI presumably seen this station a number of times before; it's really XHBS-TV, 100 kW. 1623 on 2, football made out among the weak CCI; Mundial presumed [At this point I also get some FM DX; see USA: 88.3] 1650 on 2, YLs in studio chat show, CCI 0153 on 2, Gala bug in LR 1709 on 2, Azteca-7 bug in UR during football 0154 on 3, XHBC bug in UR: it's the dark blue weak signals in & out for the next hour or so square with a bold white italic 3 in the middle in a (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ; left border, XHBC letters on their sides reading upwards; across the bottom in tiny font, ** MEXICO. Fitful sporadic E poking MUF barely MEXICALI-CALEXICO. Something else at the top into channel A2, June 26, UT: may have been cut off by overscanning. At same 1424 on 2, weak CCI peaking about SSW time, generic Televisa squashed-oval bug in LR. 1433 on 2, animation with Televisa-5 net bug in LR With news anchor? UT June 28: Photo of N logo of Notivisa on snowy XHBC picture 2217 on 2, video from the west fades in, to go with at 0202: http://www.w4uvh.net/xhbc4.jpg indications on the 6m ham map; soon gone again 0203 on 5, briefly Azteca-13 bug LR, no doubt UT June 29: XHAQ also Mexicali

0025 on 3, Spanish from the WSW; square bug in 0204 on 3 and onwards, lengthy interview by leggy UR with italic bold 3 in white/light; at a fade-up I can woman with Eva Longoria, all in English with open see it`s XHBC Mexicali with call letters on the left Spanish captions. Eva explains that she's of side, running upward on their sides. Also smaller Mexican heritage but a ninth-generation American

AUGUST 2014 ··· 18 ··· COAST TO COAST TV DX from ; parents speak Spanish to each other 1529 on 2, TU CANAL bug in UR, 9:29 AM clock but not to her; is snow free much of the time, but during detailed horoscope nonsense by YL, from heavy ghosting. Aries onward, i.e. XEPM-TV Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, still going at 1537 0205 on 3, photos of XHBC (sorry, my monitor is ``folding over`` at the top of screen, but you can still 1540 on 2, local Ciudad Juárez ad; in `Hola, see the ``3`` bugs in the UR) Juárez` show, with its large but lower-case j logo Eva by herself: http://www.w4uvh.net/xhbc4.jpg Then I have to go out, but no Es noted on lower FM Eva with leggy interviewer: caradio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING http://www.w4uvh.net/xhbc5.jpg DIGEST) Eva interview with Spanish caption: http://www.w4uvh.net/xhbc6.jpg ** MEXICO. Bits of sporadic E above 54 MHz: To be added to nothing during the day on July 1, but snow-patrol http://www.worldofradio.com/tvdxfoto.html on analog 2 set finally gets something July 2, UT:

0206 on 3, Eva iv interrupted for ``Somos Amigos 0306 on 2, talkshow from TELEFUTURA bug in UR del Aire`` XHBC-3 promo, anti-pollution? federal fades in weakly = XEFB- PSA; Copa promo TV, Monterrey NL; also algo on 3

0219 on 3, after another commercial break, cut Bits of video continue to show occasionally on 2 back abruptly to Eva iv in progress as if there were past 0435, maybe same station. Some may be not any natural breaks in it; prompted by the meteor bursts (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING interviewer, she is lamenting how tough it is to be DIGEST) both beautiful and bright. Then fade out for a while ** MEXICO. On the lookout for sporadic E, antenna 0224 on 2, two stations at same offset CCI from south, from 1430 UT or so July 3 until it breaks out SW; one with a pasodoble, dance competition despite nothing much on G7IZU 6m map: show? on Televisa-2 net 1512 on 2, fade in algo from south 0227 on 3 & 4, algo 1520 on 2, Spanish promo ``en el siete``, so 0228 on 3, poor signal about the Copa from Azteca-7 net, most likely XHTAU Tampico; 1525 Televisa Deportes menacing robomonster animation, net-7 bug in UR

0247 on 3, XHBC fades back in, still the interview 1550 on 2, animated ID for Azteca with Eva Longoria 1551 on 4, other animation from Televisa net-5, 0248 on 3, ad on XHBC for Q – Quechan Casino with bug in LR Report (which is not in the Andes, but Winterhaven CA, across from Yuma AZ) 1557 on 4, novela with Televisa net-2 star bug in LR, unID bug in LL; also 20 kHz offset CCI. At 1558 0254 on 3, XHBC audio mixing with something one of them supers across top of screen in big else, football? bright letters, XELN-TV4, which is 100 kW in Torreón, Coahuila, and which W9WI.com lists as 0320 on 3, XHBC still in poorly with Televisa-5, and zero-offset, which if correct could not produce fine 20-kHz beat bars with 0358 on 2, bit of f-bug in LR from SW, i.e. Televisa- anything else 4 net (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 1558 on 2, Aztecarioca studio show handling soccer ball, pre-game?

1559 on 4, Gala swirl bug in upper left, unusual, *** MEXICO. Another Sporadic E opening, during novela. Only one listed in W9WI.com is June 30 UT: XHGK-TV, 100 kW in Tapachula, Chiapas, but I am not convinced. But Bill Hepburn`s updated ch 4 1406 on 2, f bug in LR from south, i.e. Televisa-4 map, http://www.dxinfocentre.com/TV4.pdf net or relay shows XELN-TV as Gala, rather than the number 9, and Chiapas remains cut off the map, too far south 1415 on 2, TELEACTIVA bug in UR, i.e. XEFB-TV, --- one more inch would cover all of Mexico Monterrey NL 1612 on 3, algo, studio soccer; unID bug in UR 1416 on 4, algo 1616 on 3, Pingüinos de Madagascar animation, 1435 on 2, talk show, Azteca-13 bug in UR net-5 LR, so starting earlier than 11:30 am today

1445 on 2, nothing but CCI now 1641 on 5, exercising, Televisa net-2 star bug LR

1507 on 2, Azteca 13 bug in UR, very poor 1642 on 6, algo, studio talk

AUGUST 2014 ··· 19 ··· COAST TO COAST TV DX (I have also been monitoring 87.75, 88.1 and 88.3, 1457 on 3, Grupo Pacífico oval 3 bug in UR, so but no MUF into FM) XHQ Culiacán, Sinaloa; 1459 organ donation PSA/promo, finishing with 1705 on 5, Pingüinos from Televisa 5 animated YO CREO

1710 onwards, opening diminishes, just in time for 1502 on 3, ``Grupo Pacífico`` audibly mentioned, lunch 1503 DTV promo explaining about converters. So how much longer will XHQ remain DXable on 1748 on 2, still weak CCI and at times also on 3 analog 3? Until November 26, 2015 according to: http://tvdxtips.com/mexcitylist.html 1758 on 3, old-style movie credits, gunshots, must be western, seems opening rather than closing; See also map at http://www.tdt.mx/tdt/ bug in UR I can't make out. But it must be outdated as claims already shutdown analog May 2014 in Monterrey, and border cities 1802 on 4, graphic reading BANCO CENTRAL -----; Nuevo Laredo, Juárez, all of which I am still seeing 1804 financial graph in analog in June/July! But I suppose ch 2 stations like XEFB, XEFE and XEPM could vanish at any 1805 on 3, western is in again, hero in white hat but moment unseems El Llanero Solitario; unknown bug in UR, too close to corner 1504 on 3, animated intro to CARRUSEL show for kids, then YL hostess in studio, soon two of them. 1810 on 3, Televisa-5 bug LR, animalation dubbed This is still XHQ into Spanish, surely originally speaking English 1509-1510 on 3, snapped several photos of XHQ 1815 on 3, better view of them, a bitch and a dog with 3 bug in UR, this the sharpest altho color had --- rather like Lady & the Tramp? Haven't seen it in dropped out: sesquidecades. No, dog is more wolfy than woofy, http://www.w4uvh.net/XHQ1.jpg and so is she. Has rodramatic music score; 1817 to be added to Canal 5 promo, CCI http://www.worldofradio.com/dxfotos.html

1818 on 4, still financial discussion audio at least; 1513 on 3, stationary graphic about ``Fidel 1821, up to color briefly, host welcomes YL to Gutiérrez`` audibly mentioned, turns out to be an ``her`` studio ``Amber Alert Sinaloa``, i.e. missing (young?) person 1818 on 5, MUF back up to here weakly with algo ads 1526 on 4, MUF up to here now with CCI

1831 on 3, wolves vs bears in feature-animation, // 1529 on 3, another Amber Alert Sinaloa with on 2, but less CCI on 3; definitely net-5 bug in LR, mugshot. Bug in upper right now appears to be but this does *not* match their national schedule: Pacífico`s stylized gull-in-flight enlarged in http://www.televisa.com/canal5/horarios/ the oval, but no number with a series of half-hour cartoon shows 1530 on 3, back to show with 3 bug in UR Weak opening still going on ch 2 and 3 as I wrap up this report at 1845 UT July 3 (Glenn Hauser, OK, 1532 on 4, it's Televisa-5 net bug in LR with DX LISTENING DIGEST) animation, soon gone

** MEXICO. Another analog sporadic-E opening is 1539 on 4, shelf of football uniforms, pre-game underway when I turn on and tune in at 1418 UT show. Generic Televisa Deportes bug in UR, July 5: alternates with Televisa-2 star bug also in UR

1418 on 2, `Sabadazo` show bug in lower left, with 1539 on 2, // 4 but much CCI on 2; then 4 talking segment from a beach, peaks southwest. Televisa- about boxing next Saturday, back to Copacabana 2 star bug in LR; audio CCI from rap/dance music for World Cup in English 1540 on 3, still kidvid with two YLs 1423 on 2, now they've added an -o, so ``Sabadazoo`` as current guest is a parrot 1556 on 4, Belgian national anthem, // Univisión on cable 61 here, not synched by a few seconds. 1433 on 2, Sabadazo now features clown, and girl Also // ABC via KOCO-7, not ESPN-1 with with teeth braces Wimbledon. This 4 is very likely XHBS-TV, Los Mochis, Sinaloa 1436 on 4, algo with loud audio but hardly any video. This takes some doing, considering the 4.5 1612 on 4, built up to strong signal but also CCI; MHz MUF difference. June 16 brought two new Texas FM stations in KINL and KPRR; tropo from northern Arkansas was in at the same time. The June 19 opening brought six new FM stations from Florida to bring that state to the 70-station mark. I finally hit the 200-station mark from Illinois with the log of new WJKG 105.5; I also added two new stations during the E-skip opening the same evening. June 30 brought a tropo opening to the Mid-South that allowed me to log two new NOAA Weather Radio stations from Mississippi. The Ackerman transmitter was clearly the strongest of the two new Mississippi stations heard. On both stations, I heard a tropical weather outlook for the storm that became Hurricane Arthur. WBLX 92.9 is the first Mobile market station I’ve logged on tropo (I heard WZEW 92.1 via E- skip in 2009). In the middle of that opening, an E-skip opening was also noted to upstate New York and southern Quebec, noting relogs of WQTK and CBF12 on 92.7. I caught WSIE 88.7 off on July 5 during an E-skip opening, allowing me to log KFRI with their Christian CHR programming from Air 1. The E-skip opening the next day started with another opening to Quebec, combined with a tropo opening to western Indiana. The opening switched to the northwest later in the day, with only my second North Dakota FM in the logbook (KACL 98.7) and putting Montana one station closer to #20 (KTHC 95.1 is the 19th Montana FM). The opening ended with the log of KQAZ 101.7 for my 14th Arizona FM. The July 10 E-skip openings brought MUFs into the FM band from Quebec and Ontario, with another log of CBF12 and hearing CBON26 for the first time in several years. As of July 14, the FM total is now at 1,279, with the NOAA Weather Radio total at 116. 73.
