Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Artwork by Sam Yeates, Rising from the Ashes, Willie Takes Flight for Austin (2017) 3-6 Introduction 3 This interdisciplinary lesson guide allows classrooms to explore the exhibition Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s on view at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum® from May 25, 2018 – February 14, 2021. Students will examine the causes and effects of the Outlaw movement through analysis of art, music, video, and nonfiction texts. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time.

  • Johnny Horsepower, Som I En Travl Turnésæson Med Optræden I Bl.A

  • Skyllstad, Kjell Music in Prison and Freedom
Music in Prison and Freedom Projects and prospects Kjell Skyllstad University of Oslo Incarceration is one of the most depressing experiences imaginable. Freedom is mostly a concept until you lose it. Suddenly your life is no longer your own. You belong to the state, which means that every little aspect of your life is under the control of someone else…. You’ve already lost the respect and trust of your community, and even being released doesn’t change that very much. Essentially, once you’ve been jailed, you become eternally branded as unwanted: refused decent housing, rejected for employment, unable to care for yourself, let alone your family. This is beginning of a letter headed Music behind Bars that inspired the writing of this article. It was written by an inmate, Ralph Jones (pseud.) while serving a long term sentence in a prison in the US. Words alone cannot measure up to the pain and suffering inflicted by a prison system, which in many countries around the world are still built on the principle of retributive rather than restorative justice. The letter from Ralph points to how this mentality is also mirrored through the ways in which societies react to ex-convicts. Through the ages music and song have developed as vehicles for the expression of the pain of the prison experience, and as a means of survival, often creating new musical forms and genres, like the blues. But, as the letter goes on to show, music also has other functions to fulfill: Reducing tension, connecting people and bringing peace Increasing empathy and reducing animosity Providing an outlet for creativity and self expression Connecting with past life, bringing back happy memories Offering training to make music after release Beginning with a closer look at songs from different times and places mirroring the harsh realities of prison life, we will try to explore these various functions of music behind bars, both in an individual, social and finally political context.

BIOGRAPHY: SHEL SILVERSTEIN CHILDREN’S AUTHOR, ONE-OF-A-KIND SONGWRITER Shel Silverstein is most famous, especially among younger generations, for the best-selling children’s books that he wrote and illustrated: The Giving Tree, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and A Light in the Attic. But Silverstein’s abundant creativity also stretched into songwriting, and he played a significant role in Outlaw- era music making. “Shel is the greatest lyricist there ever was,” said Country Music Hall of Fame member Bobby Bare, who frequently collaborated with Silverstein. “What he writes is so, so descriptive — so visual — that you couldn’t help but respond to it.” Born on September 25, 1930, in Chicago, Silverstein soaked up country music as a boy, but he felt the strongest tug toward art and words that were meant to be read. “When I was a kid — twelve, fourteen, around there — I would much rather have been a good baseball appeared on the landmark Wanted! The Outlaws album player or a hit with the girls,” he recalled. “But I couldn’t in 1976. Waylon Jennings released “The Taker” play ball. I couldn’t dance. Luckily, the girls didn’t want (co-written with Kris Kristofferson) in 1971. Silverstein me; not much I could do about that. So, I started to also scored two hits on the 1972 pop chart with Dr. Hook draw and to write.” & the Medicine Show’s “Cover of the Rolling Stone” and “Sylvia’s Mother.” Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953, Silverstein became the staff cartoonist for the Pacific edition of Stars and The songwriter formed an enduring partnership with Stripes, the military newspaper.
