2017-18 St. Mary Catholic Schools Donor Report St. Gabriel Elementary • St. Margaret Mary Elementary • St. Mary Elementary St. Mary Catholic Middle School • St. Mary Catholic High School A Message from SMCS President Helen Englebert

Dear Friends and Families of SMCS,

It is a true blessing to be a leader for St. Mary Catholic Schools. As president, I have the privilege to witness the generosity of so very many benefactors of SMCS. All too often we think of donor support from a financial standpoint, but the reality is that a vast of individuals also give unselfishly of their time and many talents to support our school system. This humble giving manifests itself in so many ways, and truly serves as part of the strong foundation that enables our schools’ dedicated faculty and staff to carry out our mission through Catholic education.

Looking at a snapshot of last year, donor financial support provided: • A spectacular $1.5 million fully equipped 6,500 square foot fitness and training center addition to our high school • A $150,000+ conversion of our high school IMC (library) to an updated resource center to facilitate student learning and counseling • An investment of more than $76,500 for nearly 1,900 classroom leveled book sets, supporting materials for spelling, vocabulary, and phonics, and corresponding teacher training for our elementary literacy program (materials for grades 6-8 will be added in 2018-19) • Acquisition of $43,000 for Project Lead The Way (PLTW) instructional materials and teacher training to support integration of our grades 2-8 science and technology curriculum (K-12 in 2018-19) • Annual fund support in the amount of $187,991 for our operating budget • Additional revenue of $434,122 through our Zephyrfest, Z-NIGHT, Zephyrs Gold, and Scrip fundraiser profits • Funds in excess of $311,000 for student activities through fine arts/activity/athletic booster clubs and elementary/middle school events

It is remarkable, the many ways in which our donors and volunteers help our SMCS community. It is through partnership with family, church and community that we are able to provide excellence in Catholic education focused on faith, academics, service and personal development from preschool through high school. With the help of your engagement and contributions, our learning community is enriched to provide rigorous and relevant instruction while developing our students to be Disciples of Christ. On behalf of our youngest learners to our twelfth grade leaders, we thank you for everything you do to make a profound and lasting impact in our schools, and most importantly, for our students!

In faith and with God’s blessings, St. Mary Catholic Middle School and our elementary schools are accredited by Religious and Independent Schools Association (WRISA), which is recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Since 1932, St. Mary Catholic High School has held continuous accreditation through AdvancEd, Helen Englebert a division of The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, SMCS President the largest community of education professionals in the world. All five schools are jointly members of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools.

SMCS teachers, specialists and aides meet the requirements of the Diocesan Foundation Catechetical Certification process and are licensed educators, and all teachers and specialists hold either bachelor’s or master’s degrees.

3 The financial and in-kind support of the leadership at Bergstrom Automotive and Miron Construction Co., Inc. have transformed the St. Mary Catholic Schools middle and high school campus into one that is second-to-none in northeastern Wisconsin. Even more valuable to our community is the leadership and vision provided by these generous benefactors. Their personal interest in areas such as school spirit and system promotion multiplies the already significant benefits of the facilities upgrades.

Thanks to their vision and dedication during the past 18 months, our community now enjoys: • A stellar training and fitness center that benefits students, class oups,gr athletic teams, faculty and alumni • A completely renovated and upgraded school counseling and resource center in the high school • Beautiful landscaping around the campus with an emphasis on the entrances to our high school and Jane’s Woods • A refreshed high school chapel and help with refurbishing the high school band room and purchasing our electronic message board

In addition, the planning for reconstruction of the high school commons was started during the last school year, and the transformation is now being enjoyed by all SMCHS students every day. More than just a place to eat, it is a wonderful, sunlit gathering spot where students study and socialize. A beautiful new Spirit Stop was also added, where fans can purchase Zephyrs apparel.

Thank you, Bergstrom Automotive and Miron Construction Co., Inc., for providing your amazing resources and support to help us make our schools the best-in-class!

16 QUICK STATS SYSTEM AND SCHOOL FUNDRAISERS St. Mary Catholic Schools relies heavily on the effort of many volunteers who work on the fundraising events for our school system and for each campus. Volunteers including parents, alumni and community supporters tirelessly work to plan the events, solicit sponsorships and auction/raffle items, encourage attendance and act as set-up crew, hosts and clean- up patrol.

The result for each of the events listed below is a unique and festive evening, the proceeds from which provide vital funding for educational basics, classroom supplies and exciting special projects.

Z-NIGHT The first-ever Z-NIGHT took place at Waverly Beach in Menasha in November 2017. The festive occasion replaced Jumbo Gumbo, and was SMCS’s 13th system-wide autumn fundraising event. Hundreds of SMCS supporters gathered for an evening of great food, friends and fun, which also included inducting the newest members of the Zephyrs Athletic Hall of Fame: Emily Tuchscherer ’02 Stagliano, Mick Kelly ’06, Tess Reddin ’06, Patti Houlihan ’75 and the 1955 state champion boys team. Z-NIGHT raised nearly $67,000 before expenses, which went directly to the school system’s operational expenses.

Zephyrfest Industrial chic décor greeted guests to our 33nd annual Zephyrfest gala, dubbed ZF18. Hosted in the brand new Fox Cities Exhibition Center, the elegant evening featured exciting live and silent auction offerings, fabulous raffles, delicious food and cutting-edge desserts. This vital fundraiser brought in more than $525,000 before expenses to provide essential support for all five SMCS campuses. The new locale was such a great space for this important event, that Zephyrfest 2019 will take place there on April 13, 2019.

Meet Me in the Middle The 2017 Bluegrass and BBQ-themed Meet Me In The Middle fundraiser was a casual evening featuring the live band “Badgergrass.” Guests enjoyed a delicious pulled pork dinner, barbecue demonstrations and tastings, cash bar, and a lot of fun. Raffling off a decked- out Big Green Egg grill added to the evening’s excitement as well as the evening’s proceeds of more than $33,000 before expenses, which helped to fund classroom needs and important initiatives. TASTE: A Brewfest Event Fans of the annual St. Gabriel Elementary School fundraiser enjoyed a new twist on an old theme at the 2017 event. Rebranded TASTE! A Brewfest Event, the “evening of beer and bites” took place at a new venue, The Ballroom at The Reserve in downtown Neenah. True to its name, the event offered 40 handcrafted brews, wine, soda and coffees, and food from more than 25 local establishments. Great live entertainment with Kip Jones and numerous raffles helped raise gross funds of more than $26,500 to support initiatives on behalf of the students by the parent organization, as well as the system’s technology needs.

Wines Around the World St. Margaret Mary Elementary School hosted their annual fundraising event, Wines Around the World “Night on the Town” at The Ballroom at the Reserve in downtown Neenah. The event included live music, dancing and international wines paired with appetizers from Carmella’s An Italian Bistro, as well as a variety of desserts. The evening began with a champagne reception and offered many event board activities to sign up for, as well as tea towels designed by St. Margaret Mary students to help raise money for a cafeteria makeover. Other projects supported by the gross proceeds of just over $68,000 include technology and computer upgrades, specific classroom curriculum tools and materials, tuition assistance and community-building activities.

Winter Escape St. Mary Elementary School held a humorous event featuring the Minneapolis-based Dueling Pianos show at the OuterEdge Stage in Appleton. The witty, high-energy music show entertained the guests, who also enjoyed tasty snacks while on bidding on enticing silent auction items and entering a generous cash raffle. School families helped make the event, which grossed just under $25,000 a success by contributing items for themed-baskets created by the Pre3-5 classes to fund technology upgrades and additional important initiatives.
