  • A Fiction-Based Religion Within the Harry Potter Fandom
Religions 2014, 5, 219–267; doi:10.3390/rel5010219 OPEN ACCESS religions ISSN 2077-1444 www.mdpi.com/journal/religions Article ‘Snapewives’ and ‘Snapeism’: A Fiction-Based Religion within the Harry Potter Fandom Zoe Alderton Independent scholar; E-Mail: [email protected] Received: 18 December 2013; in revised form: 6 February 2014 / Accepted: 11 February 2014 / Published: 3 March 2014 Abstract: The book and film franchise of Harry Potter has inspired a monumental fandom community with a veracious output of fanfiction and general musings on the text and the vivid universe contained therein. A significant portion of these texts deal with Professor Severus Snape, the stern Potions Master with ambiguous ethics and loyalties. This paper explores a small community of Snape fans who have gone beyond a narrative retelling of the character as constrained by the work of Joanne Katherine Rowling. The ‘Snapewives’ or ‘Snapists’ are women who channel Snape, are engaged in romantic relationships with him, and see him as a vital guide for their daily lives. In this context, Snape is viewed as more than a mere fictional creation. He is seen as a being that extends beyond the Harry Potter texts with Rowling perceived as a flawed interpreter of his supra-textual essence. While a Snape religion may be seen as the extreme end of the Harry Potter fandom, I argue that religions of this nature are not uncommon, unreasonable, or unprecedented. Popular films are a mechanism for communal bonding, individual identity building, and often contain their own metaphysical discourses. Here, I plan to outline the manner in which these elements resolve within extreme Snape fandom so as to propose a nuanced model for the analysis of fandom-inspired religion without the use of unwarranted veracity claims.

Kate Potts: 100 605046 PhD Thesis The Blown Definitions: Towards a Poetics of the Multi-Vocal Poetic Radio Play Kate Potts Royal Holloway, University of London Creative and Critical Writing (Poetry) PhD Thesis 1 Kate Potts: 100 605046 PhD Thesis Declaration of Authorship I Kate Potts hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: ______________________ Date: _____________________ 2 Kate Potts: 100 605046 PhD Thesis Abstract The introduction of radio broadcasting in the early twentieth century, at a time of rapid development in global communications and travel technologies, prompted a radical re- imagining of the poet – and poetry’s – role in this new public, communal space. This thesis seeks to explore and define, critically and creatively, the poetics of the multi-vocal poetic radio play, a sub-genre fundamentally shaped by this reconfiguration.1 The thesis examines the development, form, and functioning of the multi-vocal poetic radio play which, I argue, is a sub-genre distinct from both the prose radio play and single-voice works of radio poetry. This thesis proposes that the multi-vocal poetic radio play is a reworking of western oral poetry traditions – originating in the oral heroic epic as authoritative, mnemonic, pre- literate repository of collective cultural memory – in the context of the twentieth and twenty-first century’s increasingly globalised, pluralistic and documentary modes of representation. PERFORMANCE, POWER & PRODUCTION A SELECTIVE, CRITICAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE RADIO INTERVIEW Kathryn McDonald Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of Bournemouth University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2014 COPYRIGHT STATEMENT This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and due acknowledgement must always be made of the use of any material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. II ABSTRACT Title: Performance, Power & Production. A selective, critical and cultural history of the radio interview Author: Kathryn McDonald This thesis charts the historical evolution of the ‘personal’ radio interview, in order to understand its use as a speech device, a social relationship and a communicative genre. Four contrasting styles of interviewing have been chosen to illustrate key moments and to illuminate significant shifts in the history of UK broadcasting: Desert Island Discs (1942-1954), The Radio Ballads (1958-64 & 2006), the confessional style phone interview format on independent local radio (1975) and Prison Radio projects (1993-present). These cases draw together an assortment of live and pre-recorded material, across a variety of genres that encompass over seventy years of production output, granting an opportunity to demonstrate the specificities of each example, whilst also identifying any overarching themes or differences. Primary research has been carried out using an assortment of audio content and written archive, comprising of scripts, memos, letters, diaries, training documents, contracts, policies and guidelines, which give us a further sense of how this method of talk has developed over the decades.
