INTRODUCTION Professional sports leagues make up a world of their own in which the best athletes, employed by various teams, display their talents before thousands of spectators. The National Hockey League (NHL) is undoubtedly the most popular professional sports league in Canada. The NHL is composed of thirty teams, six in Canada and twenty-four in the United States' that compete every year for the Stanley Cup, the archetypal dream of every professional hockey player. Since it was created in 1917,2 the NHL has grown into an industry that generates billions of dollars in revenues, which are shared by a handful of players and franchise owners across North America. Given the billions of dollars involved from revenues generated by spectator ticket sales, television rights, and the sale of related products, the * Mathieu Fournier is a lawyer in the province of Quebec.
