    Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats exhibit to feature Jon Langford artwork Exhibit opens March 27, 2015, for a two-year run NASHVILLE, Tenn., December 9, 2014 – The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum has unveiled the artwork for its forthcoming exhibit Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City. Created by renowned artist and punk rocker Jon Langford, the commissioned painting will serve as the exhibit motif and inspiration for other artistic elements in the exhibit design. Langford is a founding member of influential punk band the Mekons and of pioneering hard-country rockers the Waco Brothers. He was born in Newport, Wales, and studied fine art at Leeds University. Langford is known for his powerful portraits of country and rock icons, including Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. His punk rock instincts and singular artistic eye converge in a painting style that is distinctive, demanding of engagement, and at times politically charged. For Langford, the line between Acuff-Rose and Strummer-Jones is a direct one. His preferred medium is acrylic/mixed media on “square-ish wooden objects.” The exhibit logo is intricately layered in Langford’s characteristic style. It features portraits of ’60s-era Dylan and Cash, the cityscape as seen on the back cover of Dylan’s 1969 album, Nashville Skyline, and a background of exhibit-related graffiti— including names of the featured musicians, song titles, lyrics and symbols of the era. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in addition to its broad scope of educational programs and archival focus, is widely known for its provocative mix of museum exhibits showcasing the evolving history of country music.

    Victoria Music Advisory Committee - Bios Christopher Butterfield – Christopher Butterfield studied composition with Rudolf Komorous at the University of Victoria (B.Mus. 1975) and with Bulent Arel at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (M.A. 1977). He lived in Toronto between 1977 and 1992, where he was active as a performance artist, rock guitar player, and composer. In 1979/1980 he taught in the graduate visual arts department at Concordia University in Montreal, and in 1986 and 1989 he taught in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. In 1992 he was appointed assistant professor of composition at the University of Victoria. His music has been performed across Canada and in Europe, and is recorded on the CBC and Artifact labels. Kathryn Calder (Chair) - Kathryn Calder is a musician, songwriter, recording artist, and a record label and studio owner based in Victoria. For the last 15 years, she has been recording and touring as a vocalist/keyboardist with indie rock group The New Pornographers. She has also released three solo records, five albums with Immaculate Machine, and one album with her latest project, Frontperson. Composing musical scores for feature films has been another focus of Kathryn's in recent years, including ‘A Matter of Time’, a documentary about her mother’s battle with ALS. She continues to raise money and awareness for ALS research through performance and public speaking. Kathryn is the founder of Oscar St. Records, an artist-run boutique record label based on Vancouver Island. She also owns The Hive recording studio with her husband, producer/engineer Colin Stewart.

    Dear Friends That Love Music

    Laura Veirs Warp and Weft From one of the country’s most inimitable songwriters – Portland, Oregon’s Laura Veirs – comes her ninth full-length album. Beautiful, lush and at times deeply dark, "Warp and Weft" captures the intensity of motherhood, love and violence. Primarily electric-guitar driven, it is a fever dream of an album and could well be Veirs’ best work to date. It builds on the uniform praise and commercial success of 2010's "July Flame," which Utne Reader dubbed “idiosyncratic and captivating” and received glowing reviews from The New York Times, Pitchfork, NPR and others. The recording of "Warp and Weft" (a weaving term) was a community effort. Produced in Portland in March 2013 by Veirs’ longtime collaborator Tucker Martine, the album features Jim James, kd lang, Neko Case, Brian Blade and members of The Decemberists and many more. Veirs sings not only of mid-winter suns, white blossoming cherry trees and melting ice, but also suicide, gun violence and war. She weaves threads of old folk songs including “Motherless Children” as well as stories of folk-art hero Howard Finster and jazz harpist Alice Coltrane. “I think of this record as a tapestry where disparate elements come together and are stronger and more lovely as a result,” says Veirs. Veirs was eight months pregnant with her second child during the recording; she says her experience as a mother brought about some of the more beautiful and painful songs. “I’m haunted by the idea that something terrible could happen to my kids but that fear pushes me to embrace the moment.
