To be so specialized in product—and to have a product that is so tricky to wear stylishly—has carved out a hip niche for this upstart brand. Exciting to see what comes next, and for what body part. Dryworld Industries is a company from Victoria, BC, that began when a group of runners wanted to invent something that would D keep their feet dry in the rain. Eight years later, they have a line of waterproof sportswear that’s been a hit with both serious athletes DRYWORLD (members of the CFL’s BC Lions) and serious fashionistas—they work with actors, models and musicians. Definitely one to watch. Asics is a 69-year-old company that started in Japan and is synonymous with a certain kind of runner: someone hardcore. For some people, Asics is the only running shoe they’ll wear, and the Kayano, in its twenty-fifth iteration, and the Nimbus, in its twentieth, are as prevalent at North American road races as bananas and Nuun. Currently launching their streetwear campaign with EDM DJ Steve Aoki, Asics also opened their first flagship store in Canada on Toronto’s Queen Street West and A partnered with Olympic hero Penny Oleksiak. For an iconic company that’s been a hallmark of street racing since the 1950s, ASICS the stalwarts of the running industry appear to be returning strong, and cool, in the spring with innovation and flair. B BROOKS Brooks remains not only innovative and growing but also ethical, showing special care in plus-sized clothing and sports bras and featuring their own employees in innovative, thoughtful ad campaigns. In this picture, we feature the Boston Launch 5, out March 22, with energized cushioning, a midfoot transition zone and, most importantly, tiny pictures of lobsters. 8 2018 ISSUE 02 iRun.ca 9 A Z TO TO Z A BONUS LETTER ELOAD SPORT E DRINK ENDURANCE TAP In 2009 when I was transitioning from Endurance Tap is, well. we’ll let the founder, Patrick Stark, explain: “Un- recreational to elite apologetically Canadian, Endurance tap is on a mission to provide endurance athlete, I contacted athletes with a natural, great-tasting fueling solution. • Girmay Birhanu Favoured at Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon by Paul Gains
Girmay Birhanu Favoured at Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon by Paul Gains Three decades ago, the East African domination of marathon running began with both quality and quantity of great runners increasing exponentially. It can also be said they have shifted the goal posts when it comes to frequency of racing the ‘classic distance.’ When Ethiopia’s Girmay Birhanu lines up for the 2015 Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon May 24th - an IAAF Silver Label once again - it will be his fourth marathon in seven months. The astonishing rate would buckle the knees of most westerners but Birhanu serves up quality performances every time he races. With a personal best of 2:05:49 from the 2014 Dubai Marathon, where he placed 3rd, the now 28 year old has traveled the world seeking fast races and a pay cheque. Like many of his countrymen blessed with running talent, he intends to retire and start a business in a few years. On April 5th of this year, Birhanu won the Daegu Marathon in Korea with a time of 2:07:26, almost a minute ahead of his nearest rival. Lest one think that seven weeks between marathons is insane, we are reminded that a year ago Yemane Tsegaye came to Ottawa having won Daegu, then proceeded to smash the course and Canadian All- Comers’ record with a time of 2:06:54. “Yes I have recovered well and now started normal training,” Birhanu reports after being asked the obvious question. “Entoto, Sendafa, Sululta I like to train in all of those places. I am training with Gebretsadik Abraha (personal best of 2:06:21) and many other young athletes.

April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.
