The newsletter of The Scouts in Salisbury & South Wilts. Edition 6 June 2021

Hi folks,

Just a short message from me this month - as I write this we face yet further uncertainty around the immediate future: to relax or not to relax; so camp or not to camp; to Zoom or not to Zoom. All questions we’re asking ourselves again, seemingly with an increased sense of frustration!

One thing is for certain (amongst this whole raft of uncertainty) and that is the commitment, drive and enthusiasm of all our volunteers (leaders, section assistants, helpers, managers and trustees) to provide meaningful, relevant and above all FUN activities for our young people (and not so young people too!). Thank you all for everything you do.

As DC, I am amazed by the willingness of our leaders to further themselves and increase their knowledge and skills. Whether this is through formal wood badge training, informal learning or through skills courses, it’s clear that these leaders are living by the 6th ! “A Scout makes good use of time”

At this time, keep your chins up, be patient - we will persevere and get back to doing the activities we all love to do!

In the meantime, keep safe

Ian Porter District Commissioner

2022 PANTOMIME

The next Scout Pantomime auditions are in July 2021 with a brand-new script, and it will be staged next January in the Studio Theatre. Auditions will be held at Dennis Marsh House on Saturday, 10th July from 1-6 p.m. and Sunday, 11th July from 2-4 p.m. All Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Network and Leaders are welcome. Contact Tracey Waters on 07872650189 or [email protected] for any further information, or ask your section leader.

Thank you to those who joined us for our recent meeting, including Catherine joining us from Somerset! 9 colonies represented and 3 apologies.

A summary of the meeting follows:

County Beaver Scout Birthday Badges. They will be distributed as soon as they arrive with us. County are waiting for the delivery from the manufacturer. Those who entered the badge competition will also receive certificates. Bronze Awards These are still be achieved. Congratulations to one Beaver from Alderbury who has just achieved the Award as these notes are compiled. Don’t forget that there is an extension to the time limit for achieving these Awards, so young people can continue to work for them when they go into Cubs, and the activities they take part in, can go towards their Silver Award as well. Colony Numbers. Nearly all our Colonies are back meeting face to face now and numbers of young people are beginning to rise. Please make sure that you respond to any ‘Expressions of Interest’ that you receive and if you can’t accommodate the young person, then put them in touch with a leader who can, or let Rachel and Olwen know. Recruitment One of our challenges seems to be adult volunteers. Discussion at the meeting prompted one or two leaders to support each other. Please take advantage of the Recruitment workshops. The last of the District Grow Your Group Sessions is taking place over Zoom on Saturday, June 12th but there are other interactive workshops being run nationally by the Regional Teams. They are excellent and help you to think positively and differently about recruiting adults. See www.scouts.org.uk If you are stuck for adult help, then please contact us. The SAS Adult Support Unit might be able to help and if not, another leader might be able to step in for an evening. Meetings Away from your HQ Thank you to those who having been letting us now when you have been organising activities away for your HQ. It sounds as if the have been having great fun. It is a requirement to inform the DC of these occasions, but it helps if we know too. Training Compliance Please check your Compass record to ensure that your training is up to date. Any queries, in the first instance should go to your GSL or the Local Training Manager but we are willing to support as well.

Thank you all for keeping the enthusiasm and fun of Beaver Scouting going. We hope to see as many of you as possible at your colony meeting in the coming weeks. We have already managed to join three different colonies for their meetings and we don’t come expecting to watch. We will join in with the fun!
