Indigenous Round VFL Round 8 TAC Cup Round 8 28 - 29 May 2016

Football recognises indigenous contribution This weekend we recognise the contribution of indigenous players to our game as part of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round. A pleasing aspect of the AFL’s renaming of the round is the work previously done by Richmond and Essendon at VFL level in recognising the influence of Nicholls across all levels of the game. The late Sir Doug Nicholls played football for the Northcote Football Club (VFA) during the 1920s and for the Fitzroy Football Club during the 1930s, and was an influential leader who broke down barriers and helped bring the community together. Over recent years with their VFL Dreamtime clash, the Tigers and Bombers have presented the Sir Doug Nicholls Cup to the winning team and honoured the best-on-ground with the Sir Doug Nicholls Award, which has been presented by his daughter Pam Nicholls. While there will be much recognition on the field this weekend, in the Record today we highlight the work AFL is doing off the field to develop the game in indigenous communities and increasing indigenous numbers in the talent pathway. AFL Victoria’s Laguntas program continues to off er young indigenous boys between the ages of 15 and 19 the opportunity to further their development on and off the field with a strong focus on improving their understanding of the cultural heritage. Two key people that have been part of this program as coaches and mentors have been former Brisbane triple premiership player Chris Johnson and former Melbourne player Aaron Davey. We are pleased to announce both have been welcomed as new recruits to our head off ice staff , and these well respected former AFL players will play a key role in our indigenous programs moving forward. As we celebrate Indigenous Round, we also wish all the best to Andy Collins and the state team in as they face the best the SANFL has to off er on Sunday. ESSENDON Although the result didn’t go our way last week there were plenty of encouraging signs. Aaron Francis made his long awaited and anticipated debut for the club and played a solid game in defence. Chris Peart (St Bernards) also made his debut for the club and played mainly through the midfield helping himself to over 20 possessions. Will Hams and Shaun Edwards will certainly push for selection with very good games again. This week we are the only VFL game scheduled with the rest of the competition taking a bye for the VFL vs SANFL State game. We take on arch rivals Richmond in a curtain raiser at Punt Rd to the Dreamtime at the G game. Let’s hope we can get as many members and supporters down at 4pm to watch us hopefully get back in the winner’s circle. Congratulations to captain Daniel Coghlan who has been selected in the VFL State squad of 25 to play the SANFL on Sunday 29th May. All the best Cogs!
