Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains 38 (Summer 2015): 108–135 108 Kansas History “Facing This Vast Hardness”: The Plains Landscape and the People Shaped by It in Recent Kansas/Plains Film edited and introduced by Thomas Prasch ut the great fact was the land itself which seemed to overwhelm the little beginnings of human society that struggled in its sombre wastes. It was from facing this vast hardness that the boy’s mouth had become so “ bitter; because he felt that men were too weak to make any mark here, that the land wanted to be let alone, to preserve its own fierce strength, its peculiar, savage kind of beauty, its uninterrupted mournfulness” (Willa Cather, O Pioneers! [1913], p. 15): so the young boy Emil, looking out at twilight from the wagon that bears him backB to his homestead, sees the prairie landscape with which his family, like all the pioneers scattered in its vastness, must grapple. And in that contest between humanity and land, the land often triumphed, driving would-be settlers off, or into madness. Indeed, madness haunts the pages of Cather’s tale, from the quirks of “Crazy Ivar” to the insanity that leads Frank Shabata down the road to murder and prison. “Prairie madness”: the idea haunts the literature and memoirs of the early Great Plains settlers, returns with a vengeance during the Dust Bowl 1930s, and surfaces with striking regularity even in recent writing of and about the plains. -

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -

SB 6514 WORK GROUP MEMBER BIOS Donn Marshall, Work Group Chair, is retiring this summer from dual roles as associate dean of students and director of counseling, health & wellness services at University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Donn has served UPS for 31 years; he has taught, trained, researched, and presented on suicide prevention in higher education regionally and nationally. He holds a doctorate in counseling psychology from Ohio State University. Eric Baldwin serves as assistant vice president/dean of student well-being and healthy living at Gonzaga University. He oversees health and counseling services, Title IX, university conduct, case management and health educators, as well as parent and family services. Eric holds a M.Ed. in higher education and counseling, and recently completed a doctorate in ministry from Virginia Theological Seminary in educational leadership. Mark Bergeson holds a master of professional accounting degree, as well as bachelor’s degrees in physics and economics, all from the University of Washington. He works as an associate director of academic affairs and policy for the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). He has worked at the Student Achievement Council and its predecessor the Higher Education Coordinating Board for about 14 years, including over 12 years of experience managing federal and state grant programs. WSAC represents out-of-state institutions operating in Washington state. Susan Colard is administrator of Washington Department of Licensing’s Cosmetology Program. DOL licenses and regulates 200 postsecondary cosmetology schools. Christian Crowell is a junior at Evergreen College, pursuing a B.A. in community health. He grew up in Crescent City, CA. -

It takes a social-historical approach considering the established scholarship from Allen, Low, Hansen, Kuhn et al, on the development of early cinema audiences, and overlays this with original archival research to provide examples which are specific to Glasgow. -

Connor: Making Things Right: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Derek Nystrom: Of Christians and Communists: Joel and Ethan Coen’s Hail, Caesar! — INTRODUCTION — Hollywood’s Self-Critique: Five Essays on Race and Class at the Movies Chris Rock’s monologue at this year’s Academy Awards — in which he called Hollywood “sorority racist” and the event itself the “White People’s Choice Awards” — was deceptively consistent with the industry’s own self-critique featured in many of this year’s top-grossing and critically acclaimed films. Hollywood, it seems, has learned to parry generic attacks on the industry’s sexism, racism, and classism with genre films that keep the system well oiled and, perhaps, the critics at bay. The five essays featured in this collection concern films that seek absolution for the industry’s consistently unsavory politics by addressing Hollywood’s politically incorrect history in their stories or backstories. Indeed, these are mostly historical films that depict racial protest and class warfare from the perspective of an industry that continually finds itself on the wrong side of American history when it comes to issues of race and class. Jerome Christensen writes about Trumbo, a biopic about Hollywood’s most successful blacklisted screenwriter, and a film whose producers nonetheless obfuscate its own shady production history. -
