1.What years did you attend Canobolas?

1983 to 1988 2. What were your favourite subjects?

English, Music, Science, and Geography 3. Who were your favourite teachers?

Mrs Jenkins, Donna Mahoney, Di Skelton, and all of the librarians! 4. What is your favourite experience/memory of Canobolas?

Being in the stage and concert bands. I also loved the music camps, school socials, and sports carnivals. 5. Who were your best friends? Did you have a nickname?

My friends were Kevin, Simon, Glenn, Karen, Susan, Jacki and many others – we had a great friendship group. 6. What was your coolest hangout spot at school? What activities did you do at recess and lunch?

I spent a lot of time in the library – I could never have too much to read. We also used to hang out in the sunniest spots we could find around the quadrangle (before it was covered) and around the canteen. We played handball a lot. There was no Hall in those days. Recess and lunchtime in winter were pretty cold, as we didn’t have many indoor spaces at lunchtime until Year 11 and 12. 7. Do you think that attending Canobolas has helped you acquire the job/tertiary education to which you aspired/attained?

Canobolas High was excellent, and a great example of how important public education is. I had many inspirational and supportive teachers, and the school had a commitment to helping all students achieve their best. The school also had many extra-curricular activities, social events, and excursions. I think we got a high quality and broad education, and excellent life skills that provided a foundation for my university study and work afterwards. 8. What is your occupation now and what does it involve?

I work for the Australian Antarctic Division (part of a Government Department) as a policy advisor, with a focus on environmental, legal and political, and operational issues. I work on Australia’s cooperation with other nations in Antarctica, under the Antarctic Treaty, and I represented Australia in international meetings held in different countries each year. I also have been lucky to visit many spectacular and remote parts of Antarctica, and travel on icebreaking ships. A recent highlight was being part of a small Australian team that inspected stations operated by other countries – we flew around 10000kms in a small ski-equipped plane, and visited stations operated by Russia, China, Belarus, Korea, Germany, Italy, the USA, NZ, and India, as well as Australia’s three stations. EX-STUDENT PHIL TRACEY AT WORK BOWEN SCHOOL VISIT

Students from the BREAC and GEMA programs have begun working closely with primary schools to ease Year 6 students’ fears of attending high school. On Tuesday the 27th of October, 18 students from Canobolas visited Bowen Public School to sit and speak with a small group of their Year 6 students, in partnership with Mary Croaker from VERTO. Our Canobolas students sat in a circle with the Bowen students and told them what they enjoyed the most about being at high school. Bowen and Canobolas students were them able to enjoy a quick afternoon tea before getting into an intense dodgeball game run by our senior BREAC and GEMA students. All students completed a check out before we returned to Canobolas with the Bowen students giving us a thumbs up. We can’t wait to visit Glenroi Heights Public School this Friday! On Tuesday 20th October, Softball NSW conducted a Softball Clinic for students at Canobolas High! This clinic was planned in preparation to our upcoming Western Region Softball Gala Days. Donna McGrath (Softball NSW development officer) and Head Coach of the Open Women’s Softball Team, Kerrie Porter, conducted a series of batting and fielding drills for all different skill levels throughout the clinic.

Big thank you to Softball NSW and Donna and Kerrie for running the session for our students. This has been beneficial for the students in preparation to the Western Gala Days in the next few weeks. Our Open Boy’s Softball Team will head to Mudgee for the WSSA Boy’s Gala Day on Wednesday 11th November, and the Girls will head to Jack Brabham next week on the 4th November for the WSSA Girl’s Gala Day. Good luck to our coaches and teams! On the 21st of October, the Canobolas Touch Football team took on teams from across the Central West in the WSSA Girl’s Touch Football Carnival. They took on teams from Dubbo, Bathurst, Gulgong and Kandos, before the playoffs where they again met their well practised Dubbo opponents.

The Canobolas team started their campaign with a flying start with a 2-2 draw with Dubbo South. Pulling together a team only days before the carnival, it was a good opportunity to develop their team cohesion.

In the second round, the girls started confidently, but met a well drilled Bathurst side. Despite playing skilfully, and managing to restrict Bathurst to only 5 tries, they went down 5-2.

Taking on Gulgong next, Canobolas won quite convincingly 7-1, and took the momentum of the win and positive attitude into the Quarter Finals.

In the Quarter Finals, the Canobolas team played against the Kandos High team, who unfortunately sustained an injury and the game came to a complete halt, leaving Canobolas ahead 5-4 on the final buzzer.

Canobolas were riding high, but starting to feel quite exhausted by this stage, but knowing they were one game away from competing in the Final against Orange High kept them riding high. In the Semi Final, Canobolas played against Dubbo South once again. Unfortunately the Dubbo team had dusted off the cobwebs eliminating Canobolas from the carnival with a 7-2 result.

The Canobolas team played some absolutely incredible moments and magical plays, displaying both phenomenal teamwork and individual brilliance. The determination shown from the girls was consistent from the beginning of this remarkable day. They displayed not only great sportsmanship towards the other teams that were competing, but also camaraderie and support to each other within the team.

The team was supported by the work of Dylan Birks and Max Wilson who came along with us, as part of the refereeing squad for the day. A huge thanks is deserved to both Dylan and Max who also gave the girls some coaching tips throughout the day.

A massive thanks to Miss Somers and Mrs Hurford who allowed us to play in such a terrific carnival in which we all had so much fun.

CANOBOLAS RURAL TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL P&C ASSOCIATION INC.

Dear Parents,

I would like to extend an invitation to all new and existing parents to become a member of the CRTHS P&C.

The P&C consists of parents who wish to be kept informed of what is happening in the school and who want to take an active role in helping improve the school for their children. At the meetings we have informed discussions with the Principal, who keeps us up to date on issues happening in the school. We also organise fundraising which helps assist with financial support for school projects and excursions.

The P&C represent the parents of the school and therefore your views and input are of great importance. If you are unable to attend the meetings you can still become a member of the P&C by making a $2.00 contribution, which will entitle you to receive the minutes of meetings and be kept informed on any issues that arise.

The P&C meet on the first Wednesday of each month during the school term at 6.30pm. You do not have to become a member to attend meetings but you will be unable to vote on any issues unless you are a member.

Membership can be paid at the next P&C meeting or to the front office. If you have any queries, please leave a message at the office.

Kind Regards Lyn Furlonger P & C President 2020
