the restraints of human decency and fair- ness. Those photos seem to have been misplaced, for Brother Earl is whipping his listeners into an antihomosexual frenzy; gay bashings and Klan meetings are be- coming the norm in Osage, with the poten- tial that the message of hate and violence will spread. Oh, and Jim, if you can't recover the old compromising photos of Brother Earl, there's a plan to make you part of a new set of compromising photos that'll keep the Reverend in line a bit. And there's The Chief and his other knights of Hell's Fairies, who ride to the rescue from Magdalena's Slag heap Bar in Houston to Osage - but will they get there in time for the Klan's "Confront the Homo- sexuals" barbecue, and the big chase scene? Eighner dishes from one amazing char- acter and situation to another and on to the next crisis. Sometimes you wish he had developed the characters a bit more, like lavender bluesman Crumbelly Croissant; or Ellenor, queen of Osage; or Sidney, right-hand man to Professor McThacry, who decides he's really a sex god. But Eighner's quick-moving action, and his wit throughout, more than make up for any shortcomings in his story. The "sex scenes" are extremely mild, leaving most everything to the fun of the reader's imagination. The author is, mean- while, busy having fun with sly moral lessons and double-entendres - many of them issuing from the all-wise mouth of Agnes. "Dogmatists come. Dogmatists go;' she instructs Phil, her loyal protege (except he prefers being butch). "Some hate blacks and queers. Some hate capitalists and queers. Some hate Jews and queers. Some hate communists and queers. What they all hate, we think, is to be free, to be free like the truly queer. They hate to make their own choices. They try to believe there aren't any choices for them. Then they can be blameless when things go wrong ... Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." There's so much more. McThacry re- veals he has evidence that Houston's "Montrose is a homosexual enclave ... Homosexuals have been massing there for years in order to capture legitimate elected offices." Or Brother Earl lectures that "you can't flout society's standards. Whatever you think, whatever the theories, society will never, never permit men to be lovers ... But I'm a practical man ... Have your fun on the sly. It's the only way." Eighner has the scary dogma, and the mindless insanity of a gay murder or a Klan rally, down pat; and even among the fun J~.6 and the humor of the main tale, those rev- ""'IlP~fl U"'S elations make one think and be aware.
