The state Department of Motor Vehi- cles said Wednesday the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had given South Carolina an extension through Oct. 10, 2018, to implement the changes. In April, Gov. Henry McMaster signed a law allowing South Carolinians to ob- tain REAL ID Act-compliant licenses, re- versing the state’s decade-long refusal to comply. Homeland Security gave the state until this month to become compli- ant. That deadline was extended for one year on Tuesday. Once the state is certified as compliant, South Carolinians have until October 2020 before a REAL ID license is needed to show at military bases or airports. Police: 1 dead after man gives child, 3, gun to chase victim WARRENVILLE — Authorities said they have charged a man with murder after he gave a 3-year-old boy a gun and told him to chase the victim around the yard of a South Carolina home. Aiken County Sheriff’s Sgt. Stephen Shunn said witnesses told deputies that 24-year-old Timothy Johnson was shot in the chest Tuesday afternoon after the gun fired while the child was carrying it outside a home in Warrenville. Shunn said in a statement that 31-year- old Albert Davis is charged with murder, possession of a stolen handgun and con- tributing to the delinquency of a minor. Shunn said deputies are still investi- gating why Davis gave the child the gun and whether Davis was angry at John- son. Neither court nor jail records indicated whether Davis has an attorney.
