In these early days of my own ministry here in the Diocese of Sheffield, my heart is full of anticipation. There is so much happening across the Diocese to encourage anyone who rejoices in the work of the Spirit and longs for the coming of the kingdom of God.

The existing Diocesan vision has begun to take effect and there are many signs of life and growth, even in unexpected places. In neighbourhood after neighbourhood, in prosperous suburbs and areas of significant deprivation, the good news of salvation in Jesus is being proclaimed, and Christians are making a difference in their localities.

But one of the things which fuels my sense of anticipation at present is the unfulfilled potential.

Again and again, I am encountering situations in which I find myself excited about what could yet be — in this school or that chaplaincy, in this parish church or that pioneer congregation. It goes without saying that we are committed to nurturing the gifts and ministries of existing lay and ordained people across the diocese — we are richly blessed already in the calibre of disciples here!

However, equally, one of the keys to unlocking future potential is plainly for us to recruit well too. We need more workers, more faithful Christian believers who discern that God is calling them to labour in this part of his vineyard.

Mission Development Worker Project

In 2015, the diocese received funding from the Church Commissioners and Archbishop’s Council to recruit up to 15 Mission Partnership Development Workers to provide administrative and missional support to around four parishes each (working together as a Mission Partnership).

The Diocese of Sheffield has a wide breadth of vibrant churches with parishes becoming increasingly intentional in their approaches to mission.

We have small rural churches with small congregations; at the other end of the scale only 4% of our churches have more than 150 people. Three, all in Hallam Deanery in West Sheffield, account for over 2,000 attenders. These larger churches have gained considerable experience and expertise in church planting and missional communities and discussions have been taking place about how this can be shared more with the rest of the diocese, especially in those areas which need extra resources to stimulate growth.

The funding is for either Children & Family Workers or Youth Workers, referred collectively as Centenary Project Workers (CPWs) – these are rooted in the local parish church and managed locally with central support. Early indications are good with the first projects generating over 1500 new regular contacts with children and young people.

The Diocese of Sheffield The Diocese of Sheffield was formed in 1914 and is in the Northern Province of York. It has a population of approximately 1.2 million people, 140 stipendiary clergy, 174 parishes and 213 churches (at the end of 2013). It covers Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster and the subsidiary towns and villages of those areas.

The Diocese is led by the Bishop of Sheffield (Diocesan Bishop) and the (Suffragan Bishop). It is separated into two Archdeaconries: Sheffield and Rotherham; and Doncaster. Within these archdeaconries are the 12 Deaneries of: Attercliffe, Ecclesall, Ecclesfield, Hallam, Laughton, Rotherham; and Adwick-le-Street, Doncaster, Snaith & Hatfield, Tankersley, Wath and West Doncaster.

Christ Church, Oxford Christ Church, colloquially known as “the House,” is a unique joint foundation of a college of the University of Oxford and the Cathedral of the . It has a world-famous Cathedral Choir and a Picture Gallery containing an important collection of Old Master paintings that is open to the public. There is also a small Cathedral School. The College is one of the largest in the University, with approximately 110 Senior Members (tutors and college lecturers), 430 undergraduate students, and 220 graduate students. Many distinguished people have studied here including John Locke, Robert Hooke, John Wesley, Robert Peel, William Gladstone, William Walton, W.H. Auden, David Dimbleby, Rowan Williams, Richard Curtis and Howard Goodall.

It is a place where we share Christ’s hospitality, open for all to come and worship God and to pray, to give thanks and to celebrate, to seek help and find comfort and to offer themselves in discipleship and service.

We strive to be a faithful and outgoing, community-focused church blessed with people having numerous skills and talents.

Whilst much good work has already been done, we recognise that we need to grow in our knowledge of God, to conform more closely to his plan for us, and to do what God is calling us to do, in serving fully all those who live and work here.

We continue to seek God’s guidance so that we might reach out in action, prayer and love, make Jesus known and warmly welcome newcomers.

We are a single-church benefice in the central Anglican tradition in a South Yorkshire community with 190 names on the Electoral Roll.

We are strongly involved in the Wath community and we are proud of the many local events and partnerships in which our Church plays a role.

OUR SERVICES We invite worshippers of all ages and backgrounds to join us; those who have much faith and those who have little. We combine our worship with Book of Common Prayer, Common Worship and a monthly All Age Service. All are welcome!

The average number of communicants at the Sunday 10.30am service is 47, with an average of 10 communicants at both the Sunday 8.30am and Thursday 9.30am Communion service.

We use material from Common Worship, including seasonal provisions, and the Book of Common Prayer. Clergy robe in a cassock alb and stole; or cassock, surplice and scarf/stole, as appropriate.

Lay people share in the ministry of Word, Prayer and Sacrament in our weekly Eucharistic worship, reading lessons, leading intercessions, and administering the chalice.

As well as intercessory prayer in Sunday worship, we offer other opportunities for prayer, including said weekday Morning Prayer in church alongside the Vicar.

We observe Lent and Holy Week with additional services on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, a Meditation at the Foot of the Cross on Good Friday, the Easter Vigil, and an Ecumenical Sunrise Service on Easter Day.

We welcome the Wath Morris Men and visitors from the Wath Festival at the Festival Service in May.

At the season of All Souls we invite all those who have been bereaved in the past year to join us in a service of prayerful remembrance.

In Advent we have Readings by Candlelight, a Community Carol Service followed by the Fire Festival, the Children’s’ Nativity Service and Blessing of the Crib and Midnight Eucharist.

These figures represent a good average of the occasional offices conducted year on year.

Baptism: We operate an Open Baptism Policy. The family is invited to come to the All Age Service, at which their child is welcomed into the family of God and given a candle to bring back to church at their baptism. There is an active team of baptism visitors; each family is visited and the visitor is present at the baptism. On the anniversary of a child’s baptism the visitor will deliver a card and on the fourth occasion an invitation is given inviting them to join the Sunday School.

Communion before Confirmation: With parental consent and after a period of preparation by the Vicar, children may receive Communion before Confirmation. It is hoped that the children will want to be confirmed when they are more able to understand the meaning and the commitment required.

Weddings: We welcome couples from our community and those who have a certain kind of connection with it. We recognise that some marriages fail for all sorts of sad and painful reasons. So in certain circumstances we accept that a divorced person may marry again in our church after discussion with the vicar.

Funerals: We keep our funeral fees as low as possible to encourage people to bring their loved ones into church for a service.

SUNDAY SCHOOL We have a vibrant Sunday School, currently 45 children between the ages of 3 and 8. The lessons are led by four Sunday School teachers.

Sunday School begins in church and leaves during the first hymn, returning to church when the congregation moves forward to receive Communion.

The children hold a special service at Christmas based on the Nativity and we try to find various ways of presenting this message.

At our end of term service in July the children do a presentation and books are given to each child.

CHURCH GROUPS

The Church has different groups all working to the benefit of the parish. They are many and varied - here is an attempt to give a flavour of their activities.

Bell-ringers:

The ringers welcome us to church on Sundays and ring on special occasions and weddings. We have eight ringers plus improvisers’ and learners. Practice is each Sunday evening 5.30 to 6.30pm. Our tower was upgraded from six bells to eight bells in 1935. The eldest of the ‘six bell ring’ – cast in Chesterfield in 1588 – was retained and is now on show at the back of the church. Bells have been rung at All Saints since the early 1400’s with the first peal recorded in 1507.

Car Rota:

Those who find it difficult to get to services and social events are collected from and returned to their homes by volunteers on the car rota.

Charities Coffee Mornings:

Once a month a coffee morning is held in the St James’ Rooms. Coffee, tea and biscuits can be purchased and enjoyed over a chat with old and new friends. All proceeds from these coffee mornings are donated to a different charity each month. Once again a team of loyal workers bake and serve.

Choir: Music is a very important part of the Church – indeed, a Church with no music is like a body with no soul. Here at Wath, we have a robed choir who lead the music during the main services and although small in number, still sing in 4-part harmony wherever possible.

We have a qualified Organist and Choirmaster who in 2016 celebrated fifty years in post – and is one of only four organists at Wath over the last 150 years. We are also fortunate to have a well- maintained two-manual pipe organ which is thought to be one of the

largest two-manuals in the local area. It is used to lead the 10.30am service as well as weddings, funerals and special services as required.

We also have a small music group who join in with the All-Age Service once a month and on other special occasions

Dusting Rota: The church and St. James’ Rooms are ably cleaned by our Church Cleaner. Alongside this is a group of volunteers who take turns to dust and polish each week. Extra “cleaning parties” are held at Easter and Christmas and the woodwork is given an extra polish.

Flower Arrangers: This small group ensures that Sunday by Sunday (except during Lent) and at Festivals and special occasions, the church is enhanced by skilfully arranged flowers and plants.

Food Bank: In December 2014, Wath Community Food Bank was initiated by the Church with the help of the Wath Community Partnership. A group of church members, along with local volunteers, run this on a weekly basis. It is under the auspices of Fare Share Yorkshire and church members donate generously each week.

Maintenance Group:

If there’s any work needed to be done in and around church the Maintenance group is the first port of call, they tackle anything and everything: cleaning drains, sweeping up the autumn leaves, cleaning the candelabra, painting, joinery, gardening, in fact any general low-level maintenance work in church and the St James’ Rooms.

Mothers’ Union:

We have 55 members meeting monthly, some meeting in an afternoon and others in the evening. Indoor Members Prayer Circle (IMPC) members are visited in their homes on a regular basis. As well as interesting and informative meetings the members provide an invaluable service for funeral teas, are baptism visitors and organise the Tiddlers & Toddlers group.

Parish Magazine:

We produce 260 magazines a month, of which 224 are delivered. There is a dedicated team of people who edit, type, print, put together and deliver it each month. The magazine reflects church life and we welcome articles from anyone who wishes to contribute.

Social Committee:

We are a small group of people who meet as and when necessary to organise fund raising events and social events: the main events being the Garden Party, Christmas Fair and Breakfast with Santa. We hold at least three Family Fun evenings each year. The Seaside Special Family Fun was very enjoyable as was the Sparkler Party. We also co-ordinate church stalls at Wath Town Gala.

Parish Weekend:

In January each year we have a parish weekend. In 2016 we went to York – fancy dress theme for Saturday being anything to do with York including Vikings, monks, chocolates, Archbishops and Saxons. Lots of fun and games, especially the Jenga tournament won by a 7 year old!

Tiddlers & Toddlers:

This is a group open to everyone that meets on a Monday afternoon during term time from 1.00pm – 2.30pm in the St. James Rooms.

It is a chance for babies and toddlers to play; parents, grandparent and carers to chat and have a drink whilst keeping a watchful eye on their child. A good selection of toys and activities are available.

On the fourth Monday in the month we meet in church for Tiddler and Toddler Praise.

Uniformed organisations: The church is the sponsoring authority for the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Beavers, Cubs

and Scouts groups. They attend services at Christmas, Easter and Mothering Sunday,

Harvest and Remembrance Sunday.

Study Group:

This group meets most Thursdays to study, think, argue, question and challenge. The Bible is the centre of most meetings and all sorts of ideas, new and old, are discussed. Anyone and any ideas are very welcome.

WATH FESTIVAL Wath Festival takes place over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend and features folk artists and musicians, Morris men and maypole dancing; everything you could want from a spring celebration as well as a unique bun-throwing event.

On the Saturday the church participates by reading of Thomas Tuke’s Will in the market square, then processing up to the church for the throwing of bread buns from the church tower. The vicar, attired in historical costume, reads out the will of local resident Thomas Tuke before ascending the church tower. A basket of bread is winched up outside while dancing takes place and as the clock strikes twelve noon, a barrage of buns descends from on high onto the assembled crowd below.

The origins of the event lie in the early 19th century bequest by Mr. Tuke to distribute loaves to the needy on St. Thomas’ Day in December but the current revival moved the date to a more clement season which fits in with the folk festival, running now for over thirty years.

The Sunday Festival service is attended by Wath Morris Men and folk singers, some of whom participate in the service. Following the service there is Morris dancing outside the church.

Wath Morris Men are also involved at Christmas with our Carol Service where a torch is lit from the Paschal Candle and the light is taken out into the world. Outside the Morris Men dance in the light of the torch and mulled wine is served to all.

Wath Deanery Synod:

In addition to the Incumbent, All Saints has two Deanery Synod representatives and each takes a full part in the debates and consultations.

We regard the Synod as a conduit between the parish, including the wider community, and the Diocesan and General Synod. We seek to discern the mind of the people of Wath through conversation, recreation and association be that through an individual or organisation connection. We listen to the needs and desires of the parish – what matters to them, matters to us.

We then share our reflections amongst ourselves and after discussion and prayer we bring those issues for which we need support and/or guidance to our colleagues at Synod. In turn, we feed back to the parish the issues that are uppermost in the minds and prayers of others.

Often the shared concerns allow Synod members to offer advice and prayerful encouragement. Sometimes, as with our friendly amendment to the Diocese of Yorkshire and the Dales’ resolution regarding the benefit sanctions regime, we will call upon the diocese to take our call for justice further and to work with other dioceses to help us give voice to the voiceless.

The success of that resolution has proved what we can achieve when we work together and it has given renewed confidence to the parish to continue to push for a more dynamic and responsive Deanery Synod.

Churches Together is a group of all the Churches in the parish and outlying area. As well as the Church of England (represented by All Saints, Wath, Holy Trinity, Wentworth and Christ Church, Brampton), it includes St Joseph’s Roman Catholic, Trinity Methodist, Princess Street Methodist, the Salvation Army and United Reformed Churches. The Churches work closely together, especially during Lent, Easter, Christmas and One World Week. Churches Together in Wath celebrate 50 years in 2016.

OUR CHURCH BUILDINGs All Saints is a Grade 1 listed building and is in excellent condition. The building has received and will continue to receive special care and attention.

The date of the Saxon church is unknown. Wath appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Norman north aisle was added to the Saxon church in 1145-50, the Norman tower and arch added in 1175. The Apsidal (round) east end replaced by a square east end in 1230. The Lady Chapel was enlarged in 1290-95.

In 1305-20 the Early English south aisle and chancel arch were added. In 1360 the outside wall of the north aisle was rebuilt (porch and clerestory added), a Priest’s chamber or vestry added and a door from chancel to vestry.

1350-96 saw top storey of the tower and a short spire added. The first clock installed in the tower and the spire replaced by the present one took place in 1714. There was a major restoration in 1868 and organ chamber added. Following the fire of 1917 restoration followed in 1920 when an organ chamber and choir vestry were enlarged and a clergy vestry added.

1975 saw restoration of the tower and in 1976 the roof bosses were restored and painted. 1990-91 saw restoration of the Lady Chapel roof and eroded stone work. Restoration of the Baptistery was carried out in 1998.

In 2014, with the help of a grant from English Heritage and the generosity of the local and wider community, the main roof timbers and some stonework were replaced and the lead was re-laid. The lead has various guild marks dating back to Tudor times making it historically important.

We now have new lighting and an audio /visual system.

The Parochial Church Council, in collaboration with the new incumbent is willing to accept and respond to the demands of the building in order to keep the church in good order for future generations.

St James’ Rooms (Church Hall): These rooms were built on to the body of the main church in 1982/3 and comprise toilets, kitchen and main hall. The main hall can be divided into sections. Entrance to the rooms can be gained from the church via the main vestry and also from the outside of the building. Following major renovation of kitchen and toilet facilities in 2010 the St. James Rooms comply with all current regulations.

The Rooms are the meeting place for the Sunday School and for all parish events. It is also used by the community such as the Women’s Institute, dancing school, birthday parties, christening parties, funeral teas, Raising the Rafters Folk Club and Rotherham Area Assembly meetings. The room is often used by various charitable organisations for their fund raising events.

The Vicarage The Vicarage was built in 1987 to Commissioners specifications and is a detached purpose-built two- storey family home, adjacent to the church.

Downstairs comprises a sitting room, dining room, kitchen, utility, cloak room, study and large garage. The study is close to the front door and is separated from the rest of the home with an internal door to afford family privacy. The upstairs consists of 4 bedrooms, bathroom, and separate toilet.

The garden is enclosed and easily maintained.

CHILD PROTECTION & VULNERABLE ADULTS As members of the Church of England we are concerned with the wholeness of each individual within God’s purpose for everyone. We seek to safeguard all members of the church community, of all ages.

It is the responsibility of each one of us to protect children and young people from physical, emotional and sexual abuse, and from neglect. We are committed to respectful pastoral ministry to all adults within our church community and to the safeguarding and protection of vulnerable people.

Finance: We strive for a responsible commitment to the financial support of the parish as well as the Diocese.

After a period of financial challenge and self-reflection, the parish has recently succeeded in doubling its Common Fund contribution to the Diocese. We hold a Christian Giving Renewal in the autumn before an annual stewardship service. Many parishioners give by standing order through their banks rather than putting money in the box. Others use the envelope scheme. If donors are tax payers and sign a gift aid form, the Church claims the tax back from the Inland Revenue.

A recent restoration programme to our beautiful, ancient church, funded by the generosity of the community and English Heritage, has resulted in a building which will benefit future generations.

: OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS

The Church is actively engaged with the local schools and this presents us with a great opportunity to offer pastoral support and to inspire younger parishioners to explore questions of faith.

The incumbent is automatically a Governor at Wath Church of England Primary School and also has usually been a Governor at Wath Comprehensive School where s/he is actively encouraged to participate in assemblies and have an input into the RE Department.

Wath C of E School has original buildings dating back to 1855 and is a vibrant, successful and growing school with numbers on roll presently standing at 300. The school is warm and welcoming, centred around values of respect, hope and love.

Dearne Valley College is a Further Education (FE) college specialising in Vocational Training and Apprenticeships. Some of the schools visit on a regular basis as part of the National Curriculum. Many hold seasonal services in church, e.g. Harvest Festivals, Christmas services.

OUR LOCAL

COMMUNITY All Saints Church in the Parish of Wath-upon-Dearne has stood for more than 1,000 years in this place as sign and symbol of God’s love and welcome for all. It is a place where we share Christ’s hospitality, open for all to come and worship God and to pray, to give thanks and to celebrate, to seek help and find comfort. We are seeking to follow the way of Christ, to be His body on earth in this time and place, as we involve ourselves in the life and work of the local community and watch for opportunities

to live and proclaim God’s Kingdom.

Over the years the building has changed and grown. Saxons, Normans, Tudors, Elizabethans, Victorians and the people of today have left their mark on it. Wath, once known as “The Queen of Villages” has a population of around 17,500 which is still increasing following major house building in the area. The site where the mines were has now been transformed into an estate of 890 new flats and houses, a hotel, restaurants, a pub and shops.

The main shopping area of the town has a good variety of shops, as well as a Post Office and banks. There are also two large supermarkets (Tesco and Asda). Each Wednesday a market is held in the town centre.

Up until the Miner’s strike of 1984/5 there were two collieries, a coking plant and a large railway marshalling yard (the third largest in Europe) which are now closed. Many people also worked in the steel industry but over the years this has gone into recession, creating further unemployment. After these closures Wath had to find ways of handling the consequent unemployment.

Manvers Business Park:

With the help of grants from the European Union there is now a substantial increase in employment with the building of business parks which include call centres of companies such as Ventura (bought out by CAPITA in 2011), TSC, and T-Mobile, distribution centres and many others occupying purpose-built units (engineering, publishing, recycling, automotive supplies and hi-tech businesses to name a few).

Between them they are now the area's largest private employers, with approximately 60,000 employees between them. Employment is now much more diverse. Good transport links make it easier for people to work further afield.

Montgomery Hall:

One of our key partners is Montgomery Hall which is part of Wath Community Partnership, a registered Charity. The hall is a multi-purpose community venue and is the hub for the Wath Community Food Bank. The main hall hosts a large stage and a retractable cinema screen together with licenced bar and fully retractable tiered seating.

They host a variety of regular events from Rock concerts, Dance shows, Community Wrestling, Panto's and monthly Music Nights. As well as hosting many weekly activities the hall is available to hire for Weddings, Birthdays, and any other suitable event.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council:

Health and wellbeing Rotherham MBC has published its a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) online to allow residents and community organisations to see the impact of wider social factors that have an impact on people’s health and wellbeing, such as housing, poverty, the local environment and employment.

It is a useful tool to find out more about Wath as a place to live and has an important influence on the wellbeing of local people plus has the potential to inform the causes which we as a Church can support (e.g. the Food Bank).

The town has two doctors’ surgeries (The Market Surgery and Woodgrove Surgery) and a dentist’s surgery.

The nearest hospital is Montagu which deals with day surgery, minor injuries, rehabilitation and dialysis. There are District hospitals in Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley and Teaching Hospitals in Sheffield .

Transport: There are regular bus services to the outlying villages and towns, as well as Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley. The nearest railway station is at Swinton which operates commuter services to the mainline stations of Sheffield, Doncaster, Wakefield and Leeds.

Leisure: Wath has had an 18-hole golf course since 1904 and a public 9-hole golf course and driving range since 2008. A new leisure centre was built ten years ago. There are rugby, cricket and bowling clubs. There is also a new recreation area and a large lake with a boat house used for a variety of water sports. The lake also attracts many species of water birds and has good links to the RSPB Centre at Old Moor along the Trans-Pennine Trail.

The area has easy access to places of interest and beauty such as the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors. Nearer to home we have Elsecar Heritage Centre, Wentworth Woodhouse and Cusworth Hall. There are also the English Heritage sites of Brodsworth Hall, Conisborough Castle, and Roche Abbey.

Sheffield provides further opportunities for theatre, cinema, sports and leisure.

There is excellent access to the motorway system, the M1 and A1 being only a few miles outside Wath.

ARCHDEACON’S COMMENTS ON BEHALF OF THE BISHOP

The Parish Context

Wath is a key parish in the heart of Wath Deanery. Under the leadership of the Area Dean, this theologically diverse deanery has grown in mutual appreciation, understanding and support during recent years. Both the Conservative Evangelical and Traditional Catholic persuasions are strongly represented within the Deanery.

All Saints’ is one of the parishes in the deanery that occupy a central Anglican position. By tradition, the priest wears a stole to celebrate the Eucharist. The Common Worship rite is used. Worship is friendly, relaxed and reverent. The parish is clear in its desire to remain open, caring and welcoming to all, whatever their faith tradition or personal “story.”

All Saints’ building (Grade One listed) is architecturally and historically outstanding. Following major restoration to the roof, it is in excellent condition. It offers generous informal meeting and social space in its extended vestry areas, and is in every way a landmark building for the local community.

The parish population is listed as approximately 10,200, but is now thought to be larger, as many families have moved into new-build housing around the outskirts of Wath since the last census. The strength of community links is reflected in the significant number of occasional offices that the Vicar is asked to conduct. These are seen as an excellent opportunity for pastoral and evangelistic contact with non-church people.

Needs and Opportunities

The PCC recognizes that the parish needs to build on its strengths in order to see a more consistent growth pattern among all age groups. This will be a high priority for the next vicar.

The parish is blessed with a considerable Sunday congregation, including a steady number of young families who attach themselves to the church, especially in the context of seeking Baptism or Church School admission for their children.

Holding such families beyond their children’s early years has proved difficult. The PCC recognizes the need to draw these families into the life of the church and retain their allegiance. The new Vicar will explore imaginative ways of drawing these families into lasting commitment and Christian discipleship, thus partnering with the School in offering a Christian pathway for the early nurture and formation of the next generation.

The finances of the parish have recently weathered a challenging period, leading to significant depletion in the level of Common Fund contribution. The PCC is committed to a recovery process. During 2017, this has resulted in an encouraging partial recovery. It will be the role of the new incumbent to lead and continue to encourage the parish in this matter.

The connection with All Saints’ Church of England Primary School is seen as a vital bridge for the parish to reach its young families and for those families to discover the relevance and value of Church worship. The new vicar will prioritise this partnership with the school, where the incumbent is an ex officio governor.

Priorities for the New Vicar

In the context of the current chapter in the life of the parish, the Bishop has identified five priority tasks for the next incumbent of Wath upon Dearne:

i. To develop a parish strategy for reaching out to and growing people in Christian discipleship and spiritual maturity ii. To impart a vision for responsible Christian giving, with an agreed plan for recovery and sustainability iii. To share with others in outreach, especially among younger people iv. To evolve a collaborative Mission Partnership with the parishes of Brampton Bierlow and , both adjacent central-Anglican parishes who are eager mutually to share resources and prayer v. To identify and raise up a new generation of lay leadership for the parish

The Diocese of Sheffield is committed to building Christian discipleship among all who associate with the church and profess faith in Jesus Christ. The new incumbent will draw upon prayer and God-given opportunities to enable an already busy parish to deepen its roots in the Gospel.

In order to meet these challenges, the next Vicar will need to be resilient, well- resourced, spiritually rooted in prayer, nourished by the Word and Sacraments, a be a person who communicates well, inspires enthusiasm, and wins people’s trust and confidence.

She or he will demonstrate excellent management skills and establish clear priorities, so that delivering a vision for growth is not choked by the competing demands of the role.

It is clear from the Statement of Needs offered by the PCC that there is considerable energy and desire for parish development and growth. There is a recognition that the parish offers much unrealised potential. The new vicar will be supported by active churchwardens, a committed PCC and a friendly congregation who are willing to embrace change and explore new avenues for learning, outreach and growth.
