And as Harold is working he has a communist flag hidden in his desk. Harold starts looking up information about the professor and the girls. HAROLD SMITH Oh I have all of you really well... And it's all a bunch of gender studies crap. BUBBLES I'm sorry Buttercup, My classes are alright, but I have started a twitch account and I have gotten a lot of followers just for playing video games. BUTTERCUP Bubbles That's stupid because you shouldn't be using your body to get followers, and also the money you get on there is less then minimum wage. BUBBLES Oh come on Buttercup, it's so fun and a lot of the guys that I talk to are super nice. And also I work for Mr. Bravo in Los Angeles last week and he paid me around 9,000$. Buttercup face plams herself. BUTTERCUP That is because Mr. Bravo acts like a 21 year old and the reason you got that job working for him is because the professor is friends with him. Oh God, When is Blossom going to get home?!.... BUBBLES She should be home very soon I believe. BUTTERCUP Oh okay. Man I really wish we had our house back. But hopefully Ashley and the professor will get another one. CUT TO: INT. A MALL IN TOWNSVILLE - NIGHT Blossom is walking in the mall and she goes into another store. 4. Mitch gets out of line and Mitch starts walking through the mall. And Blossom notices him. Blossom gets ringed up and she pays for the new clothes. THE STORE OWNER (CONT'D) Well at least your nice, that kid needs to work his manners. BLOSSOM Does he always come here? THE STORE OWNER Yeah, he is kind of a nut, he always begs for money and he has no job what so ever. And some say his grandma has been trying to get treatment for months now. Kid, Will probley homeless real soon. THE STORE OWNER (CONT'D) What's all these clothes for anyway? BLOSSOM Nothing just new girly stuff. THE STORE OWNER I see. Well enjoy. BLOSSOM Thank you. COLLEGE STUDENT 1 Why you don't you join us in the 21st century, it aint the 90's anymore loser!!!!!!! Some of the students start making fun of him and laughing at him on the bus. CUT TO: Mitch gets off the bus and he starts heading into a ghetto part of the neighborhood and goes into a trailer home and sees his grandma dying on her bed. MITCH'S GRANDMA Hello dear, how was your day? MITCH MITCHELSON Hey grandma, I am sorry I wasn't able to get you the medicine. I'm really really trying to make sure you don't die grandma. MITCH'S GRANDMA Oh your such a good boy. Mitch hugs his grandma really tight. MITCH'S GRANDMA (CONT'D) I love you Mitch. MITCH MITCHELSON I love you too grandma. CUT TO: INT. THE POWERPUFF GIRLS APARTMENT - NIGHT Blossom comes into the apartment. BUTTERCUP Finally you showed up, where were you? 6. BLOSSOM I got some new clothes for us to wear when we crime fight and it could really help us in the future. BUBBLES Oh that's wonderful Blossom. Blossom sits down and is on the couch. BLOSSOM Has anybody herd anything back from the professor. BUBBLES No not really Blossom, we haven't herd anything back from Ashley or the professor. But maybe we should Mr. Bravo, he would know and maybe the Ed boys. Or Dexter. BUTTERCUP What about the Kids Next Door, those people saw last, BUBBLES Sadly they are not in Detroit anymore. Buttercup walks to Bubbles on the computer. BUBBLES (CONT'D) According to the news, their tree house blew up in flames and explode, there is no news if they survived or not. BUTTERCUP That's a shame, they looked like very good people. BUBBLES I know. I really hope they are alright, they are all alone... BLOSSOM I'm sure they are going to be fine. We have to worry about us though. CUT TO: 7. EXT. OUTSIDE OF THE APARTMENT BUILDING - MORNING Blossom gets out of the building and she starts heading to school and she takes the bus. As Blossom is taking the bus, she is looking at a book and studying for a test. CUT TO: Blossom gets the science building and she walks into the building. Blossom gets into the building and she sits next to a girl with blonde hair. The girl with blonde hair stairs at her. JULIE SMITH I really love your outfit by the way. BLOSSOM Oh thank you. JULIE SMITH I am kind of stuck on the science chemist stuff. And I need help. BLOSSOM Oh yeah of course I can help you. Julie hands Blossom some of her work. BLOSSOM (CONT'D) Alright okay, well the thing with chemical parts is that to mix make up with carboon and then on this part the battery with with gas as well. JULIE SMITH Oh that's awesome. That's amazing that you know science really well. BLOSSOM Oh my dad is a scientist. JULIE SMITH Oh that's interesting, my dad is a scientist as well. He works in a factory here in the city. I'm Julie by the way. 8. BLOSSOM Blossom. JULIE SMITH Wow like the flower. BLOSSOM Yes. Do you have any brothers or sisters Julie? JULIE SMITH I do, Well i have my brother name Bud and he goes here as well. BLOSSOM That's cool, What about your mom? JULIE SMITH She well...she does not do anything. It's mostly my dad that works. As Blossom and Julie are talking, a woman with blonde hair walks into the room, SARAH SUEWELL Alright class, I hope all of you had a great weekend. And I hope you guys are studying for the final as well. Mitch is also in the class and he struggling to say focused. Mitch raises his hand.

  • Abandoning the Girl Show Ghetto: Introducing and Incorporating Care Ethics to Girls' Animation
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Adam C. Hughes for the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Ethics presented on July 15, 2013 Title: Abandoning the Girl's Show Ghetto: Introducing and Incorporating Care Ethics to Girls' Animation Abstract approved: Flora L. Leibowitz In regards to animation created and aimed at them, girls are largely underserved and underrepresented. This underrepresentation leads to decreased socio-cultural capital in adulthood and a feeling of sacrificed childhood. Although there is a common consensus in entertainment toward girls as a potentially deficient audience, philosophy and applied ethics open up routes for an alternative explanation of why cartoons directed at young girls might not succeed. These alternative explanations are fueled by an ethical contract wherein producers and content creators respect and understand their audience in return for the privilege of entertaining. ©Copyright by Adam C. • Animating Race the Production and Ascription of Asian-Ness in the Animation of Avatar: the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra
Animating Race The Production and Ascription of Asian-ness in the Animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra Francis M. Agnoli Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies April 2020 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.

  • Third Wave Feminism and the Powerpuff Girls Evie Kendal Introduction the Popular Children's
There’s No One Perfect Girl: Third Wave Feminism and The Powerpuff Girls Evie Kendal Introduction The popular children’s television series, The Powerpuff Girls, was originally conceived by animator Craig McCracken under the name The Whoopass Girls in 1992.1 Following a name change and three alternative pilot epi- sodes, the series was picked up by the Cartoon Network and ran from 1995 through to 2005. During this time the show won several awards, including two Primetime Emmy awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation (2000 and 2005), and two Annie awards for Production Design and Musical Score in an Animated Series (2001).2 In this article I will be exploring The Powerpuff Girls from a feminist perspective, focusing on what is unique about this series and where it is positioned in popular media culture, before addressing some of the common criticisms of the show and identifying some of its major strengths. It will be my contention that The Powerpuff Girls embraces third-wave feminist ideology, with its focus on “Girl Power” and consumerism, while also abandoning the more individual- istic aspects of this brand of feminism by exploring the meaning of sister- hood and female empowerment through community. COLLOQUY text theory critique 24 (2012). © Monash University. www.arts.monash.edu.au/ecps/colloquy/journal/issue024/kendal.pdf ░ Third Wave Feminism and The Powerpuff Girls 235 Background: The relationship between the second and third waves of feminism According to Lise Shapiro Sanders, one of the major distinguishing features of third-wave feminism is the privileging of the “diversity of women’s experi- ence over the similarities amongst women,” with a particular focus on ad- dressing the inadequacies of second-wave ideology to deal with women’s experience beyond its “white, middle-class biases.”3 In this way, women of colour and those from the developing world were recruited into the fight for equality, while at the same time a radical reclamation of the symbols asso- ciated with traditional femininity was initiated.

  • Introduction
Introduction th My superhero creator is Genndy Tartakovsky, born in Russia on January 17 , 1970 to Boris and Miriam Tartakovsky. Genndy moved with his family to Italy, and from there to Chicago, Illinois. He attended Lane Technical College Prep High School, where he developed an interest in animation. He went on to pursue that interest at the California Institute of the Arts. There he met animators Craig McCracken and Bob Renzetti. His time at Cal Arts set him on his career. His first job in animation was in the country of Spain, where he worked on Batman: The Animated Series. But the decisive turning point in his career was when he was hired by the famed animation studio Hanna-Barbera, for whom Tartakovsky created his first and signature animated series, Dexter’s Laboratory, the story of a smart-alecky boy genius. Tartakovsky then served as Animation Director and Cinematographer for The Powerpuff Girls Movie, working with his good friend, the director, Craig McCracken. Nominated for several Emmy awards, The Powerpuff Girls TV series proved to be prelude to Tartakovsky’s greatest work, Samurai Jack, for which he won several Emmy and other awards. Major Works and Influences Samurai Jack is a story about a samurai warrior who experiences time travel in his effort to defeat the shape-shifting, demon wizard Aku, who had imprisoned Jack’s father. Like most superheroes, Jack has a secret identity, an identity so secret that we never discover his true name. Like most superheroes, Jack also has access to magic, in the form of his katana, a Japanese sword with special powers.
