Blasts Off!Off! BLASTSBLASTS OFF!OFF! by Charles M. Schulz This book belongs to: BLASTS OFF! Story by Jason Cooper Art by Tom Brannon Based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz © 2019 Peanuts Worldwide LLC Sally looked out the kitchen window. “Oh, big brother,” she said to Charlie Brown. “I think that silly dog of yours is up to something.” She saw that Snoopy was dressed like an astronaut. “It looks like he’s about to go to outer space!” 1 Charlie Brown looked out the window. “He’s either going to space or he’s made a crazy fashion choice!” 2 Outside, Snoopy and Woodstock were about to start an exciting mission. Here’s the World-Famous Astronaut, climbing aboard his spacecraft! Snoopy thought proudly. Woodstock reminded Snoopy that he was also dressed as an astronaut. Oh, yes, and the World-Famous Astronaut is joined by a bird in a little space suit. Woodstock sighed. His nickname was not quite as catchy. 3 This mission is important! Snoopy continued. We must get this cargo to the International Space Station! Those brave scientists need us! They are totally OUT of freeze-dried snacks! Woodstock agreed the mission was important, but he had questions. 4 The International Space Station is usually called the ISS, Snoopy said. We astronauts always use cool codes like ISS, for International Space Station. Or, TDRSS for Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System… It’s like a secret code. 5 Before they blasted off anywhere, however, Woodstock reminded Snoopy that they needed to do a safety check on their spacecraft. Yes, Snoopy sighed, but let’s make it quick; there are people counting on us. 6 Snoopy was excited to begin the mission, but he knew that these final safety checks were important for the mission to go as planned. NASA should give me an award, I’m so safe, he thought to himself. 7 The astronauts looked at the space craft: the rocket, the capsule, and all three parts that made up the capsule. Everything passed the safety check. All right, Snoopy thought. Let’s go! These snacks can’t fly themselves there! 8 After a final check of life support gear, solar panels, and steering engines, they were ready. Snoopy and Woodstock entered the capsule and blasted off into space. Finally! thought Snoopy. We’ll be on the ISS in no time! Woodstock chirped up in response. What!? Six hours!? Snoopy exclaimed. I should have packed a book! 9 FFinally they arrived safely at the International Space Station. When Snoopy took off his helmet, Woodstock was surprised. Don’t worry, we’re inside, so we can breathe, Snoopy explained. The ISS makes oxygen now, so we don’t need our helmets. Woodstock took off his helmet and took a deep breath. 10 This space station is amazing don’t you think? Snoopy asked Woodstock. It’s bigger than a football field, and it goes around the Earth at almost 17,000 miles an hour! Woodstock chirped a question. Oh, sorry, I meant 27,000 kilometres an hour. I forgot birds prefer the metric system. 11 Before Snoopy and Woodstock got to work, they floated to the window and looked down at the Earth. It was a pretty blue and looked peaceful. Sometimes it’s worth trying to fly a little higher, Snoopy thought. 12 Somewhere on Earth, someone is able to see us right now! Snoopy said. We go around the whole planet once every ninety minutes. Woodstock smiled. He looked out another window and waved. 13 It only took a few hours for Snoopy and Woodstock to unload their cargo. Getting used to flying in space was tricky for Woodstock, then again, he has trouble flying on Earth too. 14 After such hard work, Snoopy decided they needed a snack. They floated toward the kitchen. On the way, the pair saw the veggie garden room. Woodstock was amazed to see lettuce growing in space! I know! Snoopy said. Scientists are studying which plants can grow in space. 15 Snoopy pulled a meal tray from the kitchen and shared an orange with Woodstock. It was fun to eat a nice piece of fruit so high above the Earth. This sure beats the old days, Snoopy thought. When famous astronaut John Glenn got hungry, he had to eat protein powder out of a toothpaste tube! 16 With their mission and snack complete, it was time to go home. Woodstock wondered if anyone would still be on the ISS after they left. Yes, there will be other people here. Snoopy assured him. This is an international place. At any one time there may be astronauts and scientists from all over the world! 17 Suddenly they heard a strange noise. “ZZZZZzzzzzzzz…” The sound was so loud they had to follow it and soon discovered astronaut Peppermint Patty, sound asleep. Woodstock didn’t understand why her sleeping bag was tied to the wall. It’s so she won’t float all around the ISS, Snoopy told him. Sometimes even people need a leash! 18 Snoopy and Woodstock laughed. They woke up Peppermint Patty, who had actually been napping on the couch. She had no idea what was going on. Snoopy and Woodstock put their helmets back on and smiled. Minutes later, Peppermint Patty was on the phone with Charlie Brown. 19 “I don’t know what’s happening, Chuck, but Snoopy and his bird friend are at my house, wearing space suits, and laughing at me.” Snoopy and Woodstock waved goodbye and walked proudly out the door. We’d better get going. We have to make re-entry before suppertime! Snoopy said. “Your dog is weird, Chuck.” sighed Peppermint Patty. 20 CAN YOU FIND 10 DIFFERENCES? • You're a Good Man Charlie Brown Character
YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN CHARACTER INFORMATION Snoopy Snoopy is an extroverted beagle with a Walter Mitty complex. He is a virtuoso at every endeavor- at least in his daydreams atop his doghouse. He regards his master, Charlie Brown, as "that round-headed kid" who brings him his supper dish. He is fearless though prudently cautious about "the cat next door." He never speaks- that would be one human trait too many- but he manages to convey everything necessary in facial expressions and thought balloons. A one-man show with superior intelligence and vivid imagination, he has created such multiple personalities as: Joe Cool, World War I Flying Ace, Literary Ace, Flashbeagle, Vulture, Foreign Legionnaire, etc. Lucy Lucy Van Pelt works hard at being bossy, crabby and selfish. She is loud and yells a lot. Her smiles and motives are rarely pure. She's a know-it-all who dispenses advice whether you want it or not--and for Charlie Brown, there's a charge. She's a fussbudget, in the true sense of the word. She's a real grouch, with only one or two soft spots, and both of them may be Schroeder, who prefers Beethoven. As she sees it, hers is the only way. The absence of logic in her arguments holds a kind of shining lunacy. When it comes to compliments, Lucy only likes receiving them. If she's paying one--or even smiling--she's probably up to something devious . Charlie Brown Charlie Brown wins your heart with his losing ways. It always rains on his parade, his baseball game, and his life.

MEDIA CONTACT Stephanie King Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center (707) 284-1268 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New Exhibition at the Charles M. Schulz Museum celebrates Snoopy’s trusted sidekick, Woodstock, in honor of the music festival’s 50th anniversary Peace, Love, and Woodstock March 17, 2019–March 8, 2020 Peanuts strip first published on July 12, 1967 SANTA ROSA, Calif. February 27, 2019—In honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock festival this summer, the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center presents a yearlong exhibition celebrating the smallest Peanuts character, Woodstock, named for the generation-defining music event. Opening March 17, 2019, and on view through March 8, 2020, Peace, Love, and Woodstock provides a rich snapshot of the landmark festival while tracing the evolution and life of Snoopy’s most trusted friend. Though birds appeared early in Peanuts, it was not until 1967 when a distinct little bird began to appear more frequently in the comic strip, capturing hearts and inspiring laughs with his unique personality and eccentric ways. In a strip from June 22, 1970, his name was finally revealed. “I had been reading the Life magazine article about the Woodstock festival and I had the little bird in the strip,” said Charles Schulz. “I thought Woodstock would be a good name for this bird and also, it will get the attention of these people that liked that kind of thing.” The September 1969 Life magazine that Schulz references is included in the exhibition alongside relics from the Woodstock event—the original program, poster, handbill, and tickets— and a historical overview of the event that drew an estimated 450,000 attendees to a dairy farm in upstate New York.
