For Immediate Release June 2018 Jason Isbell and the 400 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JUNE 2018 JASON ISBELL AND THE 400 UNIT TO RELEASE NEW LIVE ALBUM LIVE FROM THE RYMAN OCTOBER 19TH ON SOUTHEASERN RECORDS GRAMMY WINNING GROUP ANNOUNCES SIX NIGHT RUN AT THE RYMAN AUDITORIUM THIS OCTOBER NASHVILLE, TN - On October 19th, Southeastern Records will release Live From The Ryman, the new live album from four-time Grammy Award winner Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit. Live From The Ryman was primarily recorded during the group’s six sold out nights at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium in 2017. The album features 13 live versions of songs from their last three critically acclaimed, award-winning studio albums - Southeastern (2013), Something More Than Free (2015), The Nashville Sound (2017). (See full track listing below). Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit’s The Nashville Sound won two 2018 Grammy Awards for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song (“If We Were Vampires”). The album and band have been nominated for four Americana Music Association Awards - Album of the Year, Artist of the Year (Jason Isbell), Duo/Group of the Year and Song of the Year (“If We Were Vampires”). Isbell was recently featured in Rolling Stone Magazine’s ‘The New Classics”, New York Times Magazine’s “25 Songs That Tell Us Where Music Is Going" and appeared on the acclaimed AXS TV program Off Camera with Sam Jones. From 2014 to 2017, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit have sold out 14 consecutive nights at the Ryman Auditorium. Isbell and company are likely to add to that number with announcement of a new six-night run this fall on October 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28.     If you want to know how to cure a hangover, ask a musician, especially one who has recently been in rehab. “Pedialyte, that’s what you need,” Jason Isbell told me. He was standing outside a recording studio in suburban Nashville, lighting a cigarette. “It’s the stuff you give kids who are dehydrated from diarrhea. It’s like 10 Gatorades in one bottle.” Isbell is big and gregarious — he’s 6-1, 200 pounds — with wary, deep-set blue eyes that flash and size you up at the same time. On this early afternoon in February, those eyes were puffy and red-rimmed. He had only three days to finish “Southeastern,” his new album. He had four days until his wedding. Like Ray Liotta in the third act of “Goodfellas,” he was manic and barely sleeping. “Coffee and adrenaline,” he said. “They’ll see me through.” In the old days, this kind of stress would have sent Isbell, who is 34, into a tailspin. He found fame early and wasn’t ready for it. When he was 22, he joined the Drive-By Truckers, the brilliant and hard-living Alabama band. He quickly wrote several of the group’s signature songs, including the title cut of its 2003 album, “Decoration Day,” and a beautiful bummer of a tune called “Goddamn Lonely Love.” He almost as quickly burned out. His first marriage, to Shonna Tucker, the band’s bassist at the time, came unstitched in public. There were some ugly scenes. Isbell’s fondness for Jack Daniel’s did not become him.

    Jason Isbell Southeastern Release date: June 11th / Southeastern Records “Beware all ventures which require new clothes, and not a new wearer of clothes.” - Henry David Thoreau Southeastern is not a record Jason has made before, and not simply because the glorious storm and drama of his band, the 400 Unit, is absent. They will tour together; it's not a break- up record, not an album of dissolving, but, rather, songs of discovery. And not at all afraid, not even amid the tears. Which is to say that he has grown up. That it has been a dozen years since he showed up at a party and left in the Drive-By Truckers' van with two travel days to learn their songs. And then taught them some of his songs in the bargain. Jason Isbell's solo career has seemed equally effortless, from Sirens of the Ditch (2007) to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (2009), through Here We Rest (2011) and last year's Live From Alabama. Loud records, unrepentantly southern, resplendent with careful songwriting. Songs which inspire and intimidate other musicians, and critics. “ A heart on the run / keeps a hand on the gun / can't trust anyone,” Jason sings just now, his words brushing gently atop an acoustic guitar figure “Cover Me Up,” the song with which he has chosen to open Southeastern. Such tenderness. An act of contrition, an affirmation of need, his voice straining not to break: “Girl leave your boots by the bed / We ain't leaving this room / Till someone needs medical help / Or the magnolias bloom.” He sighs into the phone, considering what he's done, and why.
