SPEEDBALL

Speedball combines the elements of several team sports, specifically soccer and basketball. The object of the game is to advance the toward the and score points. At certain times only kicking the ball on the ground may advance the ball, and at other times throwing the ball may advance it. An important part of the game is to put a ground ball into the air and an aerial ball onto the ground. The playing positions are set up the same as those in soccer with 11 players. The goalie in speedball does not have special privileges.

EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES: One field 100 yards x 60 yards, two goals, one soccer ball

THE GAME: 1) The game consists of 4 quarters of 10 minutes. The game is started with a -off by the center on the 50-yard line. The opposite team must be behind the center line. 2) If the ball remains on the ground from this kick it is considered a ground ball and played only by dribbling the ball. 3) If a ball is kicked into the air and caught, it is then called an aerial ball. While you may not take more than two steps following a run, or more than one step at any other time while holding the ball. An aerial ball may be held for three seconds. 4) When the ball goes out of bounds over the a soccer throw-in puts it back in play. A , , throw-in, or a can put the ball in play when the ball goes out of bounds over the end lines.

CONVERSIONS: a ground ball to an aerial ball. It can be done in three ways: CHIPPING – Kicking the ball up to another teammate. ONE FOOT KICK UP – Putting one foot on top of the ball and pulling the ball toward yourself quickly, using your toe to scoop up the ball into your hands. TWO FOOT KICK UP (FROG KICK) – Trapping the ball between both ankles. Bend your knees outward, jump up and catch the ball with your hands.

DEFINITIONS: 1) Dribble – Advancing the ball by use of the feet. 2) Air Dribble – Method of advancing the ball by throwing ball into the air and catching it before it touches the ground. You cannot dribble the ball more than once in succession. 3) Place Kick – Kicking the ball when it is stationary on the ground. 4) Trapping – Stopping a moving ball by use of 1 foot, 1 thigh, or chest. 5) Pass – Throwing the ball to another player, or kicking the ball to another player. 6) Punt – Tossing the ball into the air and kicking it before the ball touches the ground. 7) Drop Kick – Tossing the ball into the air and kicking it after one bounces on the ground.

SCORING: – (1 point) The ball is kicked in the goal. – (2 points) A pass is thrown and is caught by a teammate standing in the . Drop Kick – (3 points) A drop kick started sent over the top of the goal.

FOULS AND VIOLATIONS: Blocking, charging, holding, holding ball over 3 seconds, kicking, obstruction, pushing, traveling, and tripping are all FOULS. The opposite team is awarded a on the spot.
