32 33 lot has changed over the years in the musical world; names such as ‘Frank Sinatra’, ‘The Who’ and ‘Michael Jackson’ carry a legacy that span over Amany years. Certain periods such as the 60s and 80s boast some of the most memorable songs of all time. Whether we like them or not, these particular periods can claim an element of originality, so much so that they can often be recognised as genres in their own right, especially the 80s. Therefore, do we envy the fact that our elders grew up amongst the mods vs. rockers revolution or does the Macarena suit us just fine? In all seriousness, can our current music generation live long in the memory just like the famous decades before us? First of all, ‘the noughties’ just sounds embarrassing when people refer to it in a musical sense. However, when you consider the names that have emerged during this period, Beyoncé, Arctic Monkeys and to name a few, you soon begin to realise that it is nowhere near as bad as first thought. The reason for this is because the ‘noughties’ is not really a musical period that offered a dramatic alteration in music style or genre. It is becoming more and more difficult to offer something new and original in the current industry. As a result of this, people in the future may be inclined to refer to specific artists rather than the decade in which they broke through. In all seriousness, Another point to consider is whether we actually think our generation of My Generation or music is actually that good anyway. Acts such as Miley Cyrus and One Direction can our current are loved by many but are loathed by others just as much. A few weeks ago, Miley Cyrus performed a rather memorable rendition (to put it politely) of music generation live Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ at the VMAs. Many people would argue that this their Generation? type of performance and music ‘genre’ is not what people want to be listening long in the memory to. Whether acts like One Direction and Miley Cyrus dominate the charts for many years remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, they certainly will not be Freddie Mercury once said, ‘I won’t be a rock star. I will be a legend’. Strong words, just like the famous remembered as musical ‘legends’. It does, however, make us question where the but words which are essentially the truth. It got us thinking, are we witnessing next generation of music may be heading if these acts are at the forefront of the future legends in the music industry right now? Or perhaps our generation of decades before us? musical industry. music is actually not that good at all. One thing that really makes bands and soloists memorable is whether they can stand the test of the time. Tracks such as ‘Twist and Shout’ and ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ don’t show any signs of decreasing in popularity in the immediate future and both tracks are well over forty years old. This is where bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones can be admired, people have never tired of their music, they truly have obtained legendary status. We can only really judge the music of our generation in the late future, to see whether people will still be listening to tracks that bands and soloists of this time have produced. The issue of originality will always be a problem in the music industry with the so called ‘mainstream’ brigade dominating the charts for the last few years. However, amongst some of the questionable mainstream hits there is a suggestion that our generation has produced a new wave of music that has not necessarily been heard before. The breakthrough of DJs is something that has emerged in the last few years, with the likes of ‘’, ‘Calvin Harris’ and ‘Avicii’ producing numerous hits. This is arguably because there is more of a technical side to music production which allows artists to experiment with new sounds. Although this sounds like an advantage, let us not forget some of the horrific attempts of auto tuning that have put various ‘artists’ to shame. It is very easy to be negative about a number of artists that are dominating the charts recently. However, you don’t have to look very far to see true talent that could go on to obtain Mercury-esque status. Artists like Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Emilie Sandé could be remembered in years to come for what they contributed to the industry. One thing is for certain, although history boasts some of the greatest talents the musical world has ever seen, you do not have to look very far to see that there are artists of our generation that could achieve similar legendary status in years to come.
