The Roundhouse has been substantially altered, especially since the transfer of the machine shop from Alamosa, Colorado to Þurango. The shop is in disauay, generally unkept and woul.d probably be threatened by OSIIA closure if an inspection were to be perforrned there. The Company has divested itself of the depot and other facilities in Silverton at the terminus, and the yard there is littered and in general disarray. T'he track bed appears to this observer to be in less than adequate state of ¡naintenance. Mr. Rentfrow confirned other track and bed problems in the Canyon where the najor portion of the line runs. The Needleton Water Tank appears to be structurally souncl but needs much work to preserve its vist¡al integrity; tÎre Company apparently wants to tear it down at the end of this season. The Hernosa Water Tank is structurâlly sound but needs roof repairs. Both tanks are historically important and interesting and should receive maintenance and rehabilitation soon" The Durango Roundhouse r.ras remodled between Decenber 1970 and April 1971., at rçhích ti¡ne two skeleton_pits and one drop pit were removed and the space converted to accompdate the transfer of the machine shop from Alamosa. One wal1 was renoved, and three outside wall sections were replaced. The stationary heating boiLer was also renoved. During the renodeling some eave brackets and roof trim were apparently renoved and not torn down but this has not been verified remodeling may have been mistaken for destruction. The Cornpany naintains no representative at the terninus in Silverton and no ticket office nor restrooms. This visitor was avoided and generally "put-off" by local officials during the period in r.¡hich an observation/inspection apptintment was being arranged. Upon arrival at the site, answers to questions were either curt, vague or not provided, and this visitor was constantly referred to the "Denver Office". Loss of visual integrity and the general disrepair, noted elsewhere in this report, hacl to be sought out, ancl only a 1itt1e infor¡natj"on was provided voluntarily with regard the condition and maintenance of the site nor its equipment a¡rd associated services, except for data on engine size and rolling stock construction provided by Mr. Griffin. (Appendix B). [,ate in the interview both Mr. Giiffin and Mr. Rentfrow became nore cordial and apparently less threatened by the visit. "lhe Silverton Depot, donated to the San Juan County Historical Society in 1969, was used by the Rail::oad until 1966. The Society rebuilt tl're chinneys and roof and repainted the structure in 1971. In the fall of 1975 vandals dynamited the south end of the depot, which was restored the following year by the I'listorical Soci"ety. This structure was built in 1882, at about the sane time the Durango depot was constructed. 'l'his is a very i"nteresting and poorly interpreted Iandmark that appeårs to have suffered from disposal of facilities, and general disregard for the maintenance of rolling stock and other facilities. 'fhere has been good general maintenance on the Durango Depot, however general review of landmark status is definitely in orcler if the Denver and Rio Granele Western Railroad is to continue thi.s line in the prog¡'am.
