Issue: 806 - ‘July’ 2010 FRONT COVER: Johanna Jackson becomes the first British woman to win Gold at a major international championship. 1) Crossing the line to take the title, 2) With her medal, 3) At the presentation ceremony in the stadium. Editorial The optimism that British race walkers have had for the past year has finally been justified. The medal winning performance by Johanna at the Commonwealth Games has brought widespread attention and public respect back to our great sport. It is eight years since we last won a major medal, with Lisa Kehler gaining CG Silver back in 2002 - but Steven Barry from Wales last won CG Gold for the home countries back in 1982, making this a long wait. We now have the momentum to keep developing our top athletes and continue performing well internationally, with the dedication of people who refused to write off our sport, and a successful development structure in place that is quickly growing to be the envy of other countries. It is easy to be pessimistic as we still have a long way to go, but our team of young talented individuals is growing, and each one has made major personal leaps this year. We look forward to seeing what they can achieve next! - - - - - - - - - - Thank you to all RWR readers, you have been very patient with me and this magazine. I had to take a major break to sort out personal issues but am now back and ready to progress this magazine further forwards. Publication has been out of synch with actual dates for over a year and I have been wondering how to fix the problem that the cover month doesn’t relate to the contents. One option is to simply change to the current date, which would take the pressure off trying to catch up all the time. Another option which could never be considered is to produce the magazine every two months - but RWR will never be anything less than a monthly magazine. After asking around for opinions, I will be attempting to bring out two magazines each month for a few months until the dates finally catch up. Your opinions on this are welcome. The magazines printing contract has also overrun by 21,000 pages in the past few months - a problem caused by success and increasing popularity! Some of the main contenders include • The winners of the 12 walk events in the Australian Junior T&F Championships • Tyler Jones, Kyle Swan and Clara Smith who all bettered the World Youth qualifying standard at the above champs • Chris Erickson who did a PB of 1:22:08 in taking 10th place in the IAAF Challenge event in Nomi, Japan • Ashleigh Resch who won the Girls 1 Mile walk at the USA National Indoor T&F Champs with a new US National Girls record of 7:00.33. Having analysed all the results, I am pleased to announce that Kyle Swan is my overall choice. I am sure that you will agree he is a worthy choice once you review my explanation. He came into the summer season with a PB of 46:50 and needed to improve to 44:15 or better to have any chance of World Youth Championships selection, but his form was well off that sort of time. He had carried an injury through the second half of 2014 and was struggling to get back into shape as the summer progressed.

Thanks to Stuart Cooper for writing up the results and emailing them to me in Brisbane so that the newsletter could proceed as usual! The conditions were perhaps best summed up by Rudolf Skrucany who wrote: Before the start it was freezing and windy, I dressed up too much, we had bit of rain at the start and during the first lap, then suddenly the rain and wind stopped, the sun came out and I overheated! Ah, the Melbourne weather – how I miss it in Queensland! A few walks deserve special mention – Heather Carr zoomed around the 3km in 15:19, some 11 secs faster than her own W60 World Track Record of 15:30.7, set earlier this year on the track at Frankston. Liz Feldman, also now in the W60 division, blitzed the 5km field with a time of 28:09, 34 secs faster than she has done over the last few years.

But Matsunaga was race walking even faster and had closed the gap to two seconds, while China’s Zelin Cai decided to protectively cover the two men in front of him and had pushed hard to remove himself from the pack. Competing in the Little Athletics Victoria U15 1500m walk championship at the Casey Fields athletics track in Berwick (Melbourne) last weekend, she won in a huge time of 6:29.19, setting a new championship record and doing a 26 sec PB! Jemma showed her potential with a win in the 2015 LBG Carnival U14 2km walk last June (9:23) but it is this summer that she has really kicked down. She won the Victorian U16 3000m championship in 14:35 in February and then improved to 14:13 in taking third in the Australian U16 3000m in Perth in March (she also took bronze in the U18 5000m walk with 15:29 at these same Australian Championships). Cousins of international walkers Jared and Rachel Tallent, Jemma and her younger sister Alanna are the latest in a long line of talented walkers to come from the Victorian country city of Ballarat.

I thought the run was disappointing. I thought coming here I'd run a 45 second low time but it's just not happening. We'll wait and see what the championships bring, it's just about hard training between now and then. 21/07/2018 12:44 Tom BOSWORTH (GBR) 3000m Race Walk Men - 1st (10:43.9) PB, WR, WL It was a shock to do that. I've just come back from altitude training but I still wanted to see what I could do and this is all heading in the right direction for the Europeans. Coming to the London Stadium changes everything for me. Usually I'm on the road and race walking isn't included in the Diamond League very often. I thought there was going to be trouble if I got beaten but I knew the crowd would push me home in that world class field. He was fourth in London last year and I knew it was going to take a PB to win.

CATCHING UP | ALUMNI PROFILES On Deadline | Brian MacQuarrie ’74 Brian MacQuarrie ’74 is, in the best sense of the word, an old-school journalist. For the veteran newspaper reporter, it’s all about the story—whether he’s in Wa- terville, Maine, interviewing the mother of the first soldier killed in Iraq, or on the Kuwait-Iraq border writing 2,000 words on deadline in the scorching desert heat. Or preparing for his fifth trip to a war zone for the Boston Globe, in June, when he’ll embed with U.S. Marines in Afghani- stan as that war winds down. “Covering the [Iraq] war, it was much more intense than I thought,” said Mac- Quarrie, who speaks with a pronounced stutter. “And it was the thrill of my life. The challenge of my life, which is why I joined the field of journalism in the first place—to write stories of importance in a way people back home could connect with.” Connecting with people back home comes easily to MacQuarrie. Born in Nor- wood, a Boston suburb, he was the oldest Boston Globe reporter Brian MacQuarrie ’74 on assignment covering the Iraq War.
