Then, in contrast, we hear the story of Jesus' “Some people feel guilty about their anxieties and regard them as a condemnation and death, and our worship closes in defect of faith. I don’t agree at all. They are afflictions, not sins. Like all contemplation of his crucifixion. afflictions, they are, if we can so take them, our share in the Passion Bold text is read or sung of Christ.” –C.S. CALL TO WORSHIP (in Garth) THE REVEREND DR. STEPHEN R. MONTGOMERY Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Hosanna in the Highest.

PROCLAMATION OF THE ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM MATTHEW 21:1–11 When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

SUNG ACCLAMATION B. OLIVER

*PROCESSION INTO THE CHURCH *PROCESSIONAL These stanzas for “ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR” VALET WILL ICH DIR GEBEN have been selected and translated from a much longer Latin poem written by a bishop who was the leading theologian in Charlemagne’s court. They are sung to a 17th century German chorale, as adapted for these words in the mid-19th century.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY MS. APPLE Living God, we enter with palm branches and shouts of Hosanna. In the back of our minds we know the rest of the story of your journey to Jerusalem, but we would rather not see what is to come. In this place and time, turn our hearts again to the truth of the life, death and Christ. Guide us on this painful journey to the cross that we might bear witness to the passion of Christ. Guide us that we may one day triumphantly enter the city made not by human hands—the new Jerusalem, your kingdom on earth where, with you and the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in glory forever. Amen. The Passing of the Peace is one *PASSING THE PEACE of the most ancient responses in worship. Having The peace of Christ be with you. received Christ’s peace, we pass it on. And also with you!

This poignant text is set to a tune written especially for it later in the same century. INTROIT Choir: Since Jesus on the cross was hung, By anguish sore his body wrung, In pain and bitter torment,

Then ponder well within thy heart His seven blessed sayings. SYMPHONY

THE FIRST WORD

Evangelist: And it was close upon the third hour when they crucified the Lord, and Jesus said:

Jesus: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.

THE SECOND WORD

Evangelist: There stood by the cross of Jesus, Mary, his mother, Mary, his mother’s sister, the wife of Cleophas, and Maria Magdalena. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and beside her the disciple John, whom he loved, said he to his mother: Jesus: Woman, behold now thy son.

Evangelist: And then said he to the disciple: Jesus: Beloved, this is thy mother. Evangelist: From that moment John took to him the mother. THE THIRD WORD Evangelist: Straightway one of the evil-doers which had been hanged railed on him and said: Thief: If thou art Christ, then help thyself and us. Evangelist: And then answered the other, chiding him, and said: Thief: O thou, hast thou then no fear of God, seeing thou dost share the same punishment? Indeed, we are justly condemned, for we deserve punishment for deeds which we have done; but remember not a thing amiss hath this man done. Evangelist: And unto Jesus he said: Thief: Lord, remember me when thou comest to thy kingdom. Evangelist: And Jesus said: Jesus: Truly, I say to thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise. THE FOURTH WORD Evangelist: And at about the ninth hour he cried aloud and said: Jesus: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? Evangelist: Which is interpreted: Jesus: My God, My God, wherefore hast thou me forsaken? THE FIFTH WORD Evangelist: And after this, when Jesus knew that all things were done, that the Word might be fulfilled, said he: Jesus: I am thirsty. Evangelist: Now one among the soldiers present ran in haste, filled a sponge with vinegar and hyssop and brought it and put it on a reed and held it to his lips and gave him to drink. THE SIXTH WORD Evangelist: Now when Jesus had received the vinegar, he said: Jesus: It is fulfilled. THE SEVENTH WORD Evangelist: And once again he cried aloud and said: Jesus: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. Evangelist: And after he had thus spoken, he inclined his head and gave up his spirit. SYMPHONY CONCLUSION He who holds the Savior’s atonement dear And oft recalls the Seven Words, He will receive God’s own blessing Both here on earth, by God’s good grace

And there in the life everlasting.

OFFERTORY PRELUDE ON “PASSION CHORALE” JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685 – 1750) Doxology literally means *DOXOLOGY “words of glory.” Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Christians to praise God. Here we honor and thank God “from whom all blessings flow.” During , many churches traditionally refrain from singing “Alleluia.” So we are using this doxology during this season.
