Our analysis of the growth in the area suggests we have enough secondary capacity at Massey High School to cater for the growth for the next 5-8 years. This is the message I gave the Principal of Kaipara College the other day and may be his conversation with the community was based on that. However, we are investigating 1982 long term options for a new secondary school in North West Massey. Thanks for the suggested approach and statement. We will likely use it for queries as they arise! I apologise for this error. Given the continuing development activity in Hobsonville Point and in Scott Point, we do not expect Hobsonville Point High School to accept 1982 out of zone enrolments. The response should have referred to anticipated growth in the wider north west area; that is Kumeu, Huapai, Riverhead, Massey Redhills, Whenuapai, Hobsonville and Scott Point. Act The Network Planning team are aware of the future growth areas in north west Auckland. We work with other agencies such as Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Watercare. We also track development intentions where known, although staging of development is not always certain. We update our modelling as new information becomes available such as census data or consent data. Massey High School currently has surplus capacity. We estimate that a new secondary school will be needed in the north west area around 2026 and are actively investigating options. Regards Janet Information Planning Manager Schooling Networks Auckland Ministry of Education 9(2)(a) From: 9(2)(a) Sent: Thursday, 13 June 2019 12:51 PM To: Janet Schofield <[email protected]>Official Subject: Plans for new high school for Kumeu area Dear Janet, I am emailing you as you were thegiven as a contact by Suze Strowger after an enquiry in relation to the pressing need for a new high school in the Kumeu/huapai area. My concerns are that in Suze’s response she states that both Massey AND Hobsonville are options for young adults living in our area and this is simply not true. Once Kaipara change their zoning, Massey high school will be the only option. We are not zoned for Hobsonville and they are not likely to change that decision. under Given the Ministry has recently opened a new Primary school in the area, and the continuing expansion of both Huapai and Riverhead – it does not seem logical that the assumption is simply all the kids will go to Massey. We need a high quality local high school to take children from Huapai, Matua Ngarua, and Riverhead Primaries in addition there are children at Woodhill, Wheuapai and Hare Krishna who would also benefit from a local high quality school. Is there ANY planning going on at the Ministry in relation to this??? Released9(2)(a) 1982 Act Information Official the under Released 1982 Act Information Official the under Released The current roll at the new school in Huapai, Matua Ngarau is under 200 pupils. Huapai District School has space to expand. It would make more sense to expand Huapai and turn Matua into a high school to accommodate the children in this area. Kaipara being zoned and also a small school with limited extra curricular activities and Massey being an undesirable school for many parents is going to force parents to look to high schools on the North Shore. These schools are great but our 13 - 18 year olds shouldn’t have to travel for over an hour each direction in order to get the education they deserve. Leaving Waimauku at 7am and returning at 4.30pm is an extremely long day when you have an option to fix this. This includes the need for new schools. The analysis looks at expected demographic changes, student movements, including roll forecasts, and long term population projections out to 2043. The Huapai/Kumeu area was identified as a priority area for roll growth provision, with the 1982 population growth at the Year 1-8 level expected to increase by 1180 children by 2031. Our projections indicate the secondary school population from this area will reach 2080 students by 2031. Act The Huapai/Kumeu area is in the catchment of Massey High School. Massey High School is on a large site and has the capacity to accommodate the initial growth from these areas. Over the longer term an additional secondary school is likely to be required. The timing and positioning of the school will be dependent on the speed and uptake of the residential developments.
