2 0 1 8 - 2 0 1 9 ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends,

What an inspirational year it has been! I am so proud of our students, faculty and staff, and parents who have truly embodied the spirit of community.

Our school year began with the Back to School BBQ, an event we brought back last year for students, their families, and our staff to come together to celebrate the start of school. We ended the year in celebration at the parent-run Summer Send-Off, closing the street for games, dancing, and treats.

The months between these spirited events were just as rich. Our students applauded the plastic bag ban in Hoboken, an initiative they diligently fought for over several years. Parents and the Service Club instituted a citywide toiletries drive to help community members in need. A Fifth Grade student earned a spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. The Count Basie Center for the Arts’ 2019 Teen + College Film Festival bestowed Best Documentary to one of our Seventh Graders for her film, A Beginning to a Clean Environment.

These are just a few examples of the rich experience our students receive because of the generosity of our supporters. Thank you for helping us reach new heights!

With appreciation, Jill Singleton

2018-2019 Annual Report 03 SCHOOL FAMILIES

We launched our School Families program this year, bringing together students in Grades 2-8.

Eighth Graders served as the “parents” and directed activities for their families. Meeting weekly, School Families strengthened connections among students across multiple grades and allowed our older students to develop their leadership skills. Students will remain with their family throughout their time at All Saints.

School Families quickly became a favorite part of everyone’s week!

2018-2019 Annual Report 04 DIVERSITY

We are intentional about incorporating diverse cultures, languages, family structures, and individual abilities into the curriculum at all grade levels - through books, research, and class speakers.

This year, we asked our parents to donate books written in languages other than English to enrich the school library. Students and their parents were invited to celebrate holidays in school to expose our children to religious and cultural traditions that may differ from their own.

The Middle School hosted its first Diversity Fair in the spring to celebrate the uniqueness of one another. It was open to the public and the students have already made plans to expand it next year!

2018-2019 Annual Report 05 WORLD LANGUAGES

Learning a second or third (or fourth or fifth!) language opens the world up even wider to children. At All Saints, students begin learning Spanish in Nursery. By Middle School, students can choose to continue Spanish or begin taking French. Latin is introduced in Grades 7 and 8.

While vocabulary and verb conjugation are important parts of World Language curriculum, so is studying the cultures and nations that speak those languages. What is life like for a child in France vs. Quebec vs. Madagascar? Eighth Grade students get a hands-on lesson during their Ecuador Exchange program. They immerse themselves by living with a family, attending school, and participating in service projects to gain a better understanding of life as a teenager in Ecuador.

This year, we introduced American Sign Language (ASL) to All Saints. Students learned to sign the school song and had the opportunity to take an ASL enrichment class. The response was overwhelming positive that we plan to expand ASL next year!
