Zac Alexander won the Cairns International and was runner up in the Brisbane Open (PSA Closed Satellite) during November. Alexander completed the “Triple Crown” winning the three PSA events held in Queensland held over 3 consecutive weekends: the Queensland Open, the Mackay Open and the Cairns International.

Thomas Calvert has been very consistent of late. Calvert has reached the Quarter Finals at his last 4 events. Calvert just needs a breakthrough win to reach a semi final and his confidence and ranking will soar.

Rachael Grinham finished runner up in the Brisbane Open final but bombed out in the 1st Round of the PSA W25 Monte Carlo Classic to Canadian qualifier Hollie Naughton 11-8, 4-11, 11-13, 1-11 (36m).

Matt Hopkin reached the semi finals of the Brisbane Open (PSA Closed Satellite). Hopkin returned to the World Top 100 and is now 6 places off his career best ranking.

Solayman Nowrozi hasn’t had much luck recently. Despite reaching the Quarter Finals at his last two events the 19 year old has had to face the might of Zac Alexander on both occasions. At the Mackay Open Nowrozi lost in 20 minutes 4-11, 4-11, 3-11 but in Cairns he lost in 31 minutes 4-11, 9-11, 5-11.

Jessica Turnbull reached the semi finals of the Cairns International. Turnbull lost to eventual runner up and Queensland Open finalist Milnay Louw 5-11, 8-11, 9-11 (29m). Turnbull achieved a new career high of 73 as at 1st December 2016.

The Scarborough Squash Club, based at Redcliffe PCYC, hosted the 2016 Brisbane Squash Open from 11-13 November.

The Club would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to all the sponsors, players and volunteers who supported the tournament.

The tournament was a huge success on many levels. The participation numbers increased by 33% from last year with a mix of male and female juniors to masters. Our own club was well represented in all divisions and the tournament included players from all over Brisbane, Coffs Harbour, Gladstone, Mackay, and as far as New Zealand and England.

The Men's Open Winner was Australian Josh Larkin, currently ranked 88 in the world, and the Women's Open Champion was Jenny Duncalf from England, currently ranked 18 in the world. Jenny had some wonderful positive things to say about Redcliffe and Brisbane in her speech.

It was fantastic to have so many people traveling to Redcliffe for the tournament and to hear positive feedback about the weekend and the location. The Club is already looking forward to next year and have some plans in place to make it bigger and better and we look forward to partnering with our fantastic sponsors again. The Men’s Draw featured 3 of the 4 semi finalists from the Queensland Open.

The top 4 seeds fought out the semi finals with Zac Alexander and Josh Larkin qualifying for the final. The pair last met at the Queensland Open where Alexander prevailed 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7 in 56 minutes.

In their first three encounters Alexander was too strong winning on each occasion in straight. At the Q Open Larkin stretched the match to 4 games. It has taken 5 matches but Larkin has finally broken through and recorded his first victory over Alexander in four.

Alexander began strongly winning the first but from there on Larkin dominated the 50 minute match winning the next 3 games fairly comfortably.

The Women’s event featured a former W#1 (Rachael Grinham) and W#2 (Jenny Duncalf) plus who has won 5 PSA titles on the domestic circuit this year.

As expected Grinham and Duncalf won their way through to the final without dropping a game. Grinham took care of Saxby in three whilst Duncalf knocked out local hopeful Samantha Foyle.

In the final W#18 Duncalf won a tight opening game before W#19 Grinham bounced back and won the 2nd by a similar margin - just two points!

Unfortunately, for Grinham, Duncalf wasn’t phased by the toughness of the first two games. She put the foot down and ran out a strong winner 11-5, 11-5 to win the clash in 41 minutes.

Juniors Courtney Mather and Mackenzie Sleep performed well above expectation. Both girls upset seeded opposition to reach the Quarter Finals.
