ell, normally I’d say that if you missed the first annual New Year’s Regatta and Burger W Bash, you really blew it. But with 23 boats on the line, including boats from both Newport and Oceanside’s fleets, I’d say that the entire Fleet Six was out there! Nine boats in the A fleet, fourteen boats in the B fleet, four races, and just a lot of fun! Beautiful conditions that were light in the first three races, before the breeze woke up, shook off its morning doldrums, and filled in quite nicely for that last final race, before we all blast reached in to the docks. Well, for a Lido, it was blast reaching, but a great ending to a wonderful day. And after the racing? The second part of the regatta’s name, with the Burger Bash on shore. The bar was open, plenty of wine, beer, and adult cocktails while we all hung out on shore. Great burgers, with a wonderful spread by Dana Bell, as we all enjoyed a cook yer own grillin’. Trophies to Ryan for winning the A fleet during Twilights, and to Jennifer Kuritz for winning the B fleet in last summer’s Twilights. And the Sam and Dana Bell Volunteer Trophy was awarded to our very own Martyn Bookwalter, who so graciously comes up to PRO so many of our weekend regattas, and nearly all of our Twilights! And a huge thanks to our Fleet Captain Ken Reiff for putting together what will be an annual, New Year’s Regatta and Burger Bash. And then there’s the saga that is the SCYA Midwinters. In what is probably the first time in the history of the Lido 14 class, these funny little boats found themselves without a home, sent packing by the ABYC Board of Directors after such a poor showing last year. But with some begging and pleading from the fleet, our Commodore Dave Schack finally caved, and once again, the Lido’s grace the waters of Alamitos Bay. Midwinters for the Lido’s are just one day this year, Sunday February 17th, but he’s requiring a five boat minimum. Not four, not three…. but five! At the burger bash, we got three or four boats to commit, and Ken will be hounding the fleet members to come out in numbers, and make Commodore Schack feel all warm and fuzzy, knowing that caving to the whining of the fleet was just the right thing to do! So please, come out for Midwinters, support our fleet, and lets make Dave proud! And remember, the Harry Wood regatta down at Balboa Yacht Club is March 24th. ver the years, I have worked with many local, regional, national and international yacht clubs and have developed friendships with many members and flag officers from these O clubs. When they heard I was offered and accepted the privilege of the Club Manager position at ABYC, they emailed, called and a few visited our club to pass on their well wishes. Each of them shared how much they like participating in ABYC regattas and how much they enjoy working, and spending time with, our members. I wholly agree with their assessment and want to thank each of you for the way you represent ABYC. Should you have any suggestions or concerns that you want to share with me, please feel free to give me a call or just drop by my office the next time you’re here. Looking forward to seeing you at ABYC, The Place to BE! Rick commodore’scompass

irst, thank you to everyone who turned out for the Celebration of Champions, what a great evening honoring ABYC sailors and volunteers. We have an amazing and talented Fmembership. We have reinstated Sunset Saturdays, be sure to watch the Weekly Reader for dates and times-Your Vice Commodore is trying out some ideas with food and snacks to go along with the libations. Bring a friend or two down to enjoy the bar and the unsurpassed sunsets. On the water things are starting to get into full swing around ABYC: SCYA Midwinters are the horizon for mid-February followed by the Manning Regatta in March. The CISA clinic will take place in April and is sure to draw top young talent from California and around the US. Long Beach Race Week is sure to be a hit in June. There should be a lot of Vipers on the line as they tune up for the 640 Worlds which will be held in August. Planning for the Worlds is progressing nicely and we have over twenty competitors registered for the regatta and we are seven months away. ABYC will be hosting youth sailors this summer for the Junior Olympic festival in July. Coupling the above regattas with our traditional Holiday Regatta Series we are going to have a busy rest of the year. As always, we are looking for volunteers to help out with race management activities-if you want to find out more about opportunities feel free to contact me, any other board member, or the race management team. See you around the Club Dave viceverses

would like to again congratulate all our Bell Ringer and Burgee award winners. It was a pleasure to present you your awards at the last membership meeting. If you where not I able to attend, please see Shelia for your award. It looks like the new Patio furniture will have to wait a little longer. The BOD is reviewing several maintenance items that have come up. As nice as it would look, we need to take care of the club first. I will keep you posted when we know more. The Board of Directors has also made a change to Yard Rule 3.10 as follows: 3.10 Upon notification that a space is available, the eligible member will have 10 calendar days to take possession of the space. This is a change from 30 days. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. With the help of Henk Baars, all of the BBQ burners are now working. Thanks Henk Last, please check your boat after all this rain. Quite a few boats are full of water. Thank you, Stephen Mueller

ey all you musicians that would like to try to play in front of a friendly audience. We have a new bar that could suit your interests. I would like to find some Happy Hour Friday Hevenings that could be for “bring your instrument and voice to the Yacht Club. If you have your own equipment all the better. We do have some really nice speakers and microphones which could be used. I will be trying to figure a nice setup if you have any ideas, that would be great. The idea is to take a corner of the bar as a sort of stage. Not really a stage so much as room to sit. We have a couple of really nice things that the Social Advisory Committee (SAC) has planned for the next few months. Speaking of SAC, if you are someone who likes to plan and deliver parties you should sit in on a couple of their meetings. It is very informative as to what events are or may be going on in the future. Presently they are helping us to enjoy the SuperBowl (A Jorge Suarez Event) with a party and setup. There is an event in the planning for New(ish) members, most likely in March. It will be designed to introduce you to other members and also volunteering opportunities available at the Club. If, in the meantime, you cannot wait to jump into the fray we can find some opportunities for you. Some of the things you might find interesting: I already mentioned the Social Advisory Committee. The name is a misnomer, it should be called the Social Get It Done Committee. There is always room for help in planning, design and setup of functions that happen at the Club. They meet one Wednesday a month at 7:00PM. The next one is Feb 6th and the following one is March 6th. There is space for volunteering on the water as well. If you are interested in how a regatta is run or even how it is sailed you can come out and help keep score, set marks, run flags or timers. If your children are on the water and you would like a front row seat to the action, this is how to get it. If you have ideas you would like to see implemented and they are not part of SAC or Race Management give me a holler I can either get you to the right person or we can work it out. Dan DeLave

hope everybody survived the wet week we had in January. It was fun to have clear weather for a Lido 14 fleet race the following Sunday. The weather was beautiful with great views I all the way around. We had a bit of funky wind that day but enough to get four races off, followed by a fun patio BBQ that evening. We are currently working on getting new bottom paint on three of our whalers. We will take a good look at the others and get them up for consideration too. The hope is to have new ABYC decals, along with new burgee stickers, adhered while the boats are out of the water. This will give them all a cleaned up, nice look. Brooke Jolly

alamitos baysailing foundation lthough were in the off-season for sailing, the ABSF continues to plug away at building a framework for supporting youth sailing in the Bay. To that end we have focused recently on Astrengthening our Board and support system. We are very pleased to have elected Jorge Suarez and Ed Feo to our Board of Directors. Both bring a wealth of knowledge in finance, law and sailing and share our passion for youth sailing. We also have been fortunate to build a great network of Advisors including Jay Glaser, Staff Commodores Jennifer Kuritz and Chuck Clay as well as former Director Charles Tripp. We recently held a strategy session with the Board and Advisors and we’re off to a great start for 2019 and beyond. For more information about ABSF and its Mission, please check us out at: http://www.alamitosbaysf.org/ or reach out to any of our Directors or Advisors. Kevin Taugher, ABSF President

Please Join the Junior Fleet on February 15 for the General Meeting when our speaker will be Dr. Christopher Lowe, Professor and Director of CSULB Shark Lab. We will host a 50/50 drawing and sell Sea Bags made out of ABYC recycled sails. Bar opens at 5p, Italian dinner at 6p and meeting at 7p. Please RSVP with Sheila by February13 to ensure we have enough food.

r. Chris Lowe is a professor in marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where he and his Dstudents work with acoustic and satellite telemetry techniques to study the movement, behavior and physiology of sharks, rays and gamefishes. Dr. Lowe earned his Bachelor of Arts in marine biology at Barrington College in Rhode Island and a Master of Science degree in biology at CSULB. In 1998, he achieved a doctorate in zoology, studying bioenergetics of juvenile hammerhead sharks, at the University of Hawaii. In 1998, he returned to CSULB to teach marine biology and oversee the Shark Lab, which was founded in 1966 by Dr. Donald R. Nelson, a pioneer in the development and use of acoustic telemetry to study sharks. It has been Dr. Lowe’s goal to maintain the history of innovation Dr. Nelson established. For the last ten years, he and his students have been studying the baby and juvenile white sharks of Southern California and have greatly contributed to the field of knowledge for this enigmatic species. In addition, recent research by Dr. Lowe and his student team has focused on the development of underwater robots for autonomously tracking sharks and gamefishes. He has garnered several academic awards, including CSULB’s 2008-2009 Outstanding Professor Award, 2012 CSULB Impact in Research Award, 2016 the Nell and John Wooden Ethics in Leadership Award, and recognized by the Orange County Register as among the top 100 Most Influential People. As the climate, ocean and marine life continue to change, Dr. Lowe has become adept at speaking to media about how fluctuations in water temperatures and weather patterns have affected ocean life. He has appeared in many articles and on TV and radio broadcasts, including the PBS/BBC special “Big Blue Live”, “TODAY”, “Al Jazeera America”, “CBC News”, Newsweek, KNX Radio, the Orange County Register, Los Angeles Time and the Long Beach Press-Telegram, just to name a few. Dr. Lowe grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, where he spent a majority of his youth fishing and diving the waters around Cape Cod. He comes from a long line of New England fishermen and whalers, and the first in his family to go to college, he believes a career focused on the ocean environment was inevitable.

hirty seconds before the start four 49ers are at the leeward end of the line on Tstarboard. The wind is 18 knots with gust over 20 knots with waves. Four 49ers are almost stationary about a boat length to leeward of the starting line, sails on their port side and crews standing. The leeward boat SL (Yellow) is approximately one boat length to leeward of three other boats, with SM (Blue) the middle of three windward boats. 15 seconds before the start SL tacks to port and bears away sharply. About the same time there is a gust and SM starts moving slowly astern with the crew standing and the sail on the port side. SL, now on port, unavoidably luffs slightly in the gust and SM moves astern more quickly. As the velocity of the gust increases SL’s port bow collides with SM’s port wing causing damage to both. Both boats hail protest. SL sails and finishes the race. SM is unable to start and returns ashore. Neither boat completed a penalty turn. SL claimed that SM changed course when she started to move astern and additionally as a boat moving astern was required to keep clear of one that was not. SM claimed that she was unavoidably moving astern, SL should have kept clear and she should be given redress. Review rules 10, 14, 16.1, 22.3, 62.1(b) and see if you can figure out, the relevant facts, conclusions and the rules that apply.

Many of us have had the please sure of sailing Coronado 15s with Bill Lee and look forward to once again having W his competitive sprit around ABYC. Resignations outweighed new membership this month so as usual we want to remind everyone that membership dues are our primary source of revenue and keeping the numbers up is very important. So as always we encourage all of you to keep using the club and always remember to bring friends and family. The barbeque and fire pit are always available for use as are the many places from which to see the spectacular sunsets we have virtually every evening. Posted for January we have junior member applicant Jack Roman sponsored by Mike Sentovich along with recent applicants Richard Didham sponsored by Chuck Tripp and Martina Steiner sponsored by Gabe Ferramola. As an example of a new feature we are beginning, you will find a brief bio and photo of Martina. Future applicants will be shown similarly. ’m a Long Beach native and alumnus of UC Santa Cruz and USC, with a career as a licensed clinical social worker, helping kids and families in the South Bay. I started sailing in 2018 at Long IBeach Leeway Sailing Center and then was introduced to Gabe Ferramola, who was gracious enough to have me as regular Lido crew for Thursday Twilights and regattas throughout 2018 and into this year. I’ve really enjoyed sailing out of ABYC and getting to know many members on the water and by the fire pit after races. I hope to continue improving my sailing skills through the club and contributing to the longevity of the organization as a member. eightbells t is with great sadness that I announce we have lost a long time fellow member, Jane Berlinger. Jane passed away peacefully from pulmonary disease on January 5, 2019 with her loved ones by her side. I Lee and Jane have been members of the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club since 1972. Jane is survived by husband Lee, and her children Tod and Jenny. A celebration of her life is being planned. Alamitos Bay Yacht Club is very happy to announce our Adult Sailing Program! For the 2019 year, ABYC is running four, four-week programs to help educate the next generation of sailors here in Long Beach! These classes provide the best structure for learning and becoming a confident sailor. 1-on-1 programming combined with a fun but intensive schedule keeps students excited about their growth! sou’wester • february 2019 • page 7 sacattic Dana Bell photos his month really isn’t about the attic, but do remember that if you ever need decorating stuff for ABYC Club or Fleet events, we have LOTS of Tstuff in the attic that you can always borrow. What I’d just like to share with all, particularly our new or newest members, is all the fun ways that you can enjoy ABYC. Sunday, January 20 was a perfect example. Around 11:00’ish members of the Lido Fleet arrived in the kitchen to prepare for an afternoon Burger Bash. How many of us have all the sink space one could want, a gorgeous view, three ovens, sharp knives, and quite a selection of serving pieces to prepare a dinner for 50 with? At noon 23 Lidos were launched and two hours spent racing about Alamitos Bay. By 2:30 46 hungry sailors, the start boat and a few additional helpers and friends gathered at the BBQ for the cook-your-own sirloin Burger Bash. During and after dinner quite a few settled themselves in the Quarter Deck to watch the playoffs between the Rams & Saints, and the Patriots & Kansas City. Throughout the afternoon and into a chilly evening the fire pit was a warm welcome place to gather. To top off the day a full moon broke through the clouds shortly after dark followed by a full eclipse that turned the shadow of the moon blood red. Of course we don’t have Super Bowl playoffs and full moon eclipses every day, but we do have the Club. Office hours and the main building are open Wednesday through Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with extended weekend and holiday hours. But, the Patio, the BBQ, and access to the Quarter Deck are always available. If you want to gather with family, hold a casual meeting, play a game of cards, watch a game on big- screen TV, of course sail, or just gather around the fire pit and enjoy our beautiful Bay and Channel view … all of this is part of your ABYC membership. Take advantage of it, its great fun! Dana rulesanswer #51 ...from page 6 ollowing are the relevant facts, conclusions and the rules that apply. F FACTS 1. 15 seconds before the start on the pre-start side of the start line with 18 knots of wind and waves, SM was stationary on starboard tack with boats either side of her. 2. The crew of SM were standing up in the boat with the sails on the port side. 3. SM moved astern slowly without backing her sails. 4. SL, on port tack, initially bore away to pass astern of the starboard tack boats including SM. 5. SL altered her course slightly to weather, was hit by a gust of wind and rounded up. 6. Shortly thereafter, contact occurred between SM’s port wing and SL’s port bow causing damage to the port wing of SM and damage to the port side hull near the bow of SL. 7. SM did not to start. 8. SL completed the race. 9. Neither boat completed a penalty turn. CONCLUSION 1. SL on port failed to keep clear of SM on starboard as required by RRS 10. 2. SL did not avoid contact with SM when it was reasonably possible to do so as required by RRS 14. 3. The contact caused damage to both boats. 4. It was not reasonably possible for SM, the right of way boat, to avoid contact with SL. 5. SM’s score in the race, through no fault of her own, was made significantly worse by physical damage because of the action of SL that was breaking a rule of Part 2. DECISION 1. SL is DSQ in race 2. Redress given to SM. SM is to be scored points equal to the average, to the nearest tenth of a point (0.05 to be rounded upward), of her points in all the races before the race in question.

The above rules interpretation are my own and should not be considered authoritative. Have fun and good luck on the race course. al 20 Fleet 1 is looking forward to another good season of sailing this year. Our first regatta will be C the February Midwinters which offers two venues for Cal 20’s including ABYC and Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. Of course our local boats will stay here in our home port for the SCYA Midwinters. We have some new owners who hopefully will be coming out for the Midwinters. Also note that the large hoist retrofit is starting the day after Midwinters, so there will be no issue with getting our one ton boats in and out of the water. We would like to thank Cal 20 sailor Ron Wood for all his good work in supporting the large hoist retrofit project. Rumor has it that both the in and out and up and down controls will be mechanized which will make launching that much easier. We had five Cal 20’s racing at the Boxing Day Race this past December. Congratulations to the son and father team of Freddie and Fred Stevens who came in sixth overall. It was also great seeing new owner Alex Cross racing their new boat and we look forward to seeing Alex at many of our events this season. Alex took over ownership of the old Rubber Dog from Keith Ives and Chuck Stevens. This boat has won several Cal 20 Class Championships and hence has a great pedigree. We also have several boats going through some off season improvements including mast re-painting and keel fairing. If anyone of our Cal 20 sailors need advice on boat maintenance and go fast secrets, contact our Fleet Captain Jeff Ives. Our fleet has some great knowledge and experience with these boats and we are always eager to lend a hand (or at least advice) to fellow Cal 20 sailors. ello Sailors! ABYC Sabot Fleet Captain Kathy H Weishample has handed off the “seat of authority” of Fleet Captain to me, Cindy Heavrin. Thank you Kathy for all your work and dedication to the Sabot Fleet. Tough shoes to fill...but one size fits all in Sabots and I will do my best! Don’t let the kids have all the fun! Big advantages of Sabot racing is you don’t need to find crew, and you don’t have to listen to anyone else telling the helmsmen what to do! We always have a chase boat for safety, so Sabot Sundays are the best days to get out and practice. A noon start time usually includes 3 or 4 exciting races and then relaxation on the patio after sailing for appetizers and beverages. If you have any questions, email the new fleet captain Cindy Heavrin at [email protected].

BYC Super Sabot Saturday Recap: A great turnout on Saturday January 19th at BYC with 11 boats on the start line. Light westerly winds and a heavy outgoing tide made conditions challenging and it was anyone’s game picking the best course for wind and current. Due to the strong outgoing tide and light winds, race committee made a special course to omit K mark with all 3 races sailed from Start to M to Finish. Each race had a different 1st place finisher which made for an exciting fun day of sailing. Thank you Bev Roberts, Deanna Rollins and Becky Lenhart for putting the race on.
