SGSC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and serves over 2,500 students from 102 Georgia counties, 22 other states, and 10 foreign countries. Its main service area encompasses 15 counties in southern Georgia and includes campuses in Douglas and Waycross, entry programs through Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus) and Valdosta State University, and dual enrollment programs in partnership with several area high schools.

SGSC currently offers three Bachelor of Science degrees - Biological Sciences, Management, and Nursing. Twenty-three associate degree pathways are also offered. Known as a state college within the University System of Georgia, the potential exists for SGSC to offer additional baccalaureate degrees in the future.

SGSC is a great place for students to begin their academic journey. The College offers access to the core curriculum for transfer as well as the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree at the same tuition rate as an associate’s degree. When combined with the academic and student support services that are offered on campus, SGSC is one of the most affordable institutions in Georgia.

Students have the fl exibility to live on campus in Douglas or plan their schedules around family and work by utilizing any of SGSC’s convenient locations. The Douglas Campus boasts two modern residence halls, which provide additional student life programming and all the amenities and comforts of home. A revitalized dining hall and the Clower Student Life Center offer additional social activities. Likewise, the Student Learning Center and the James M. Dye Student Services Building provide a sense of community and fun for students utilizing the Waycross Campus.

Intercollegiate athletics has a rich heritage in both Douglas and Waycross, drawing athletes from throughout Georgia as well as other states and countries. The athletic program includes baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s softball, and men’s and women’s swimming.

SGSC has a $65.3 million economic impact on its region and partners with economic development offi cials to strengthen the quality of life in the communities it serves. Both the South Georgia State College Foundation and the James M. Dye Foundation support the College through annual awards of tuition assistance. Funding for campus priorities not covered by the State or through tuition is also provided by the Foundations to strengthen the institution’s academic and economic footprint throughout Georgia.

CORY BALDWIN Head Coach 8th season 200-109 (career), 147-70 (SGSC)

On July 20, 2009, Cory Baldwin was named the first head men’s basketball coach of the former . Since the 2013 consolidation of Waycross College and South Georgia College, Baldwin has led the South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks, and the Waycross Campus and community continue to have “basketball fever.” Excitement in the Waycross Campus gymnasium every winter continues to be strong. Baldwin has led SGSC to two championships (2010-11 GCAA Tournament Championship and 2014-15 GCAA Regular Season Championship). SGSC has averaged 20 wins a season in Baldwin’s seven seasons. He has coached three NJCAA All-Americans, one GCAA Player of the Year, two GCAA Defensive Players of the Year, two GABCA Players of the Year, and had 25 All-GABCA Academic Team Award winners. He has also received four Coach of the Year awards. Baldwin’s players have had an 89% graduation rate in his seven years at the helm. He has also had 53 of 53 student-athletes who played their full sophomore season move on to play four-year . The last two seasons have been extra successful with a 100% graduation rate (15 of 15). Prior to his time at SGSC, Baldwin served as the head coach of the Cartersville Warriors in the World Basketball Association (WBA). Baldwin led the Warriors to a 10-4 record and were the only team in the WBA to defeat the conference champions, the Buford Magic. The three previous college basketball seasons, Baldwin served as the head coach at Truett-McConnell University (TMU). He compiled the third best record in the GJCAA during that time, which included a trip to the GJCAA semifinals each year. TMU was one of only two teams during that time to make the semifinals each year (Georgia Perimeter College being the other). Prior to his work at TMU, Baldwin served as assistant basketball coach at (CSU) for seven years. Baldwin was a part of many CSU firsts. His last five years were the most successful for the program, averaging 20-plus wins. Baldwin helped coach 17 players at CSU who have gone on to play professionally overseas. Before being an assistant coach at CSU, Baldwin was a student there. He played on the CSU basketball team, where he was team captain his senior season. That season was the first ever for CSU to be nationally ranked in NCAA competition. Baldwin received his bachelor’s degree in health care management from CSU in 2000 and earned a master’s degree in instructional education from Central Michigan University in 2001. A career learner, Baldwin has taken courses in the kinesiology master’s program at Georgia Southern University. In addition to his coaching responsibilities at SGSC, Baldwin is the academic support center specialist. He had previously been an instructor, teaching various physical education courses, health, and SGSC 1000: College Orientation & Success. Teaching is not uncommon for Baldwin, who taught physical education, humanities and served as an academic advisor while at CSU and TMU. Baldwin is highly regarded not only by his players and students, but also by his peers. He was selected by the faculty to act as faculty marshal in the spring 2012 commencement exercises. A native of Jonesboro Ga., Baldwin and his wife, Amanda, have been married for 12 years. They have two beautiful children – Jerrie Marie (10) and Logan (4) – and reside in Waycross.

BASKETBALL 4 DJ HARDY Assistant Coach 7th season (‘15); SGSC (‘12) DJ Hardy is a fixture at SGSC. His smiling face and positive attitude are seen every day on campus. A proud SGSC alumnus, Hardy has worked hard to become an assistant coach known around the southeast for his recruiting, hard work, and loyalty to SGSC. Hardy has been at SGSC for 131 wins and has been a vital key to both SGSC championships. He was a student-assistant one season at Albany State University. Hardy is originally from Jesup, Ga.

HERB THOMAS Assistant Coach 2nd season Lynn University (‘14); SGSC (‘12) Herb Thomas was a member of the inaugural season of Waycross College basketball and then a redshirt on the GCAA Tournament Championship team, which finished 12th in the NJCAA that season. Thomas played his third year in Waycross and graduated before playing and graduating for Lynn University where he was a two-year starter. He was a graduate assistant at Thomas University last season and now works at Enterprise in Waycross.

SAM WATSON Assistant Coach 1st season Young Harris College (‘14) Sam Watson comes from playing basketball at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (D1) for four seasons (one a medical redshirt season) and Young Harris College (D2; his last year of eligibility). A Knoxville, Tenn. native, Watson is looking forward to his start in coaching college basketball. “I am thankful to be part of the hard working and passionate basketball family at SGSC,” said Watson.

JAMES FORREST Student Assistant 1st season Long County High School (‘16) James Forrest is entering his first season as student assistant. His brother, Eric, is a member of the team.
