The First Weekend Andy Murray, The PTA Laura Robson, Garden Party The weekend saw our PTA make over £600 for our school by opening the Fornham St Genevieve ...... and the garden of of the committee. A number of our smaller music ensembles, including a string quartet, dixie band and acappella choir, Trust entertained the visitors all afternoon and received many compliments from them. We tennis players thank the PTA and especially Jane Newton for a lovely afternoon. While most of the school was watching the Laura Robson match on our screen at lunchtime, one lucky group of year eight and nine students was on Centre Court for all the action. Later in the day they saw Andy Murray play his match without dropping a set. The trip was a reward for the excellent results our teams have achieved this season and all the students were a credit to the Academy Trust. Well done to them and thank you to Mr Marshall and Ms Walters who accompanied them. Curriculum Enrichment Week begins

The first full week in July sees the whole school abandon the traditional timetable to participate in a programme of activities which enrich and extend the curriculum. Students work in different groups from their usual sets, staff work with different colleagues and a huge number of visitors from all over the country joins us. Monday 1st July This week started with a whole series of workshops for year nine. Groups enjoyed ‘The County Bake-Off’; ‘Recreating Paris’; a Futsal Day; a Structures competition; learning new art techniques; a dance workshop; writing a script from scratch; writing detective fiction; preparing and teaching a maths activity to younger children in the Trust schools; a flight day culminating in a “fly off” between each group’s model aeroplane; an ‘Apprentice’ day; a second world war day at the Records Office and a walk of discovery entitled ‘Call Yourself a Geographer?’

Well done to everyone for a fantastic start to the week and especially the ‘Bake-Off’ winners, 1st: Katie Tilyard; 2nd: Francesca Corley and 3rd: Ellie Martindale.

For year ten, half the year group participated in a very successful enterprise day called ‘Bright Futures’ while the rest spent half the day learning First Aid with the Red Cross and half making a film with a professional company.

For year twelve students, the annual health conference took place on Monday with a large number of visitors from a number of organisations all of whom complimented our students for their excellent participation. The Day As part of our Oxbridge programme, twenty-five year nine students spent the day at Cambridge University focusing on critical thinking and reasoning skills as well as an introduction to life at Cambridge. The students participated well in the debates and were a credit to our school. Well done to them and thank you to Mrs Fletcher and Mr Randé for accompanying them.

Tuesday 2ndJuly For year nine, there was a chance to select a second workshop from those offered on Monday or one of the new choices: intaglio mixed media print-making in art; a golf day at Stonham Barns; a sports carousel at School; a debating workshop, a day’s cricket coaching at the Bury club or the French Gastronomy The Suffolk U15 Rounders Day where students learned about French cuisine and Championship made their dish whilst speaking in French all day. Year We were pleased to host the event for the top two ten students reversed their programme from Monday teams from each of the three areas of Suffolk. Our while year twelve had an excellent ‘Planning Ahead’ A and B teams went through to represent the West day with a variety of speakers including those who joined following the Western Area Tournament. The B team us from Nottingham University and from ‘Project Trust’ did exceptionally well to finish fourth out of all the A teams in London. The Year 13 Leavers’ Ball a science activity for younger children in our Trust at Ickworth House schools. Year twelve had an excellent Drivewise pres- entation from the Police, followed by half a day working The whole of year thirteen and thirty-six staff gathered on their personal statements with help from our staff and for this annual tradition. The evening began with a those from the University of . champagne reception in the Orangery with Imogen Ridge playing the harp. After the meal, the speeches and awards, the group danced through to midnight. With hugely complimentary comments from the staff at Ickworth, everyone enjoyed a fitting end to their excellent five years at County.

The Year Nine Gifted and Talented Regional Physics Competition Once again we were pleased to participate in the regional round of this competition run by the Institute of Physics. This year the title was ‘It’s not Unlucky 2013’ and after a morning carrying out a series of experiments, students had to present their findings. We were delighted to finish sixth out of all the schools in the Eastern Region and runners-up out of the non-selective schools taking part. Well done to: Ed Allan, Oliver Amps, Bethan Bradshaw and Alba Saenz de Villaverde.

Wednesday 3rd July This time it was the turn of year nine to experience the half year group activities based on Forensic Science, Relationships and Puzzle Solving. For year ten there were a series of workshops including art, sport, an egg crash-test challenge, bridge building, composing film music, making a multi-media presentation for French visitors on our town on behalf of the Tourist Office, designing a fitting memorial to the Resistance in Nazi Germany, fiction writing and preparing and teaching We especially congratulate the year ten students who With a programme comprising pieces from several well- known classical composers, a Lloyd-Webber favourite won the ‘County Bake-Off’ competition, 1st: Laura and a special arrangement of part of Beethoven’s Fifth Bartram; 2nd: Imogen Clifton; 3rd: Chloe Mitchell. Symphony, the standard was uniformly high and the audience well entertained. Congratulations to all those who took part, especially our year nine leaders, and thank you to Mrs Davids for running the orchestra.

More sports finals! Well done to our U14 boys and girls athletics squads who were Suffolk finalists and who competed so well at the Northgate Athletics Track in Ipswich and our U14 Frisbee team who were in action at the Western Area Finals.

The national mathematics final: we’re there again! Following our year ten’s national success earlier in the year, we were delighted that our year nine team won the regional round of the Edge Hill Mathematics Challenge and went through to the national final at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk. Only four non-selective schools in the country made it to the final stage and only two were mixed teams so it was a real tribute to our mathematics department and the students that we got this far. The competition combined mathematical skills with an ability to present solutions to an audience and we are very proud of Sam Berry, Sarah Burns, Holly Davies and Wesley Roper who did so well. We thank and congratulate Mr Penn and Mrs Fletcher for preparing them and accompanying them.

Thursday 4th July For year nine, Wednesday’s activities were reversed whilst year ten chose a second workshop from those offered the previous day or one of the following: making historial puppets and using them to recreate stories and scenes from the past; a ‘diplomacy in action’ day culminating in a mock UN security council meeting; The Academy Trust Orchestra’s creating a display on the history of and a End of Year Concert ceramics day. A year ten journalism team covered The orchestra, comprising pupils from all four Trust the whole day. schools, has continued to rehearse weekly after school and gave its final performance to parents and friends in a full studio theatre. Featuring our year thirteen musicians as both vocal and instrumen- tal soloists, there was also a chance for those who will ‘fill their shoes’ next year to perform solos. All those who went to Cadbury World, Colchester Zoo, Duxford and Hunstanton were a credit to our school as were those who opted for the outdoor activity days at Thorpe Woodlands and , the cycling in Thetford Forest, the golf day and the winter sports day at the Suffolk Ski Centre. In school, the film club, board games tournament and the competition to build and test a replica hot air balloon all went extremely well. Monday 8th July Our German guests arrive Now ending its 46th year, our German exchange programme with Amos Comenius Gymnasium, Bonn, is the oldest state school link in the country and one of which we remain very proud. This week allowed us to return the hospitality shown by our guests to us in February. After the formal welcome and tour of our school, all those involved in the exchange began a week in which our guests saw all the local sites, enjoyed going to the beach and cultural visits including Cambridge. Partners enjoyed time together and the highlight was the joint trip to London. We thank the large number of staff who helped, especially Mrs Sauvage who organised both legs of this year’s ex- change. We congratulate all who took part and who were excellent ambassadors for our school, town and country throughout.

The U16 national rounders finals We were proud to represent Suffolk yet again at the Nationals in Corby. The girls reached the quarter finals losing by a rounder and a half to Manchester High School for Girls. Our girls played excellently throughout the day. Well done to: Megan Boreham, Lottie Turner, Emma Greenwood, Katie McClenaghan, Harriet Welham, Ella Price, Amy Stone, Abbie Holloway, Emily Fisher and, especially, Jo Brawn who was the players’ Player of the Day. The weekend activity: ‘Grease’ is the word! Friday and Saturday evenings saw the final two performances of ‘Grease’ which began with a matinee for the Academy Trust Middle Schools. The show played to four full houses and was enjoyed by all who came. The standard of the band was much complimented as well as the standard of the show itself and the polished dance routines had the whole audience itching to join in despite the heat! We thank and congratulate almost thirty staff led by Mrs Stevens, Miss Holton, Miss Green and Mrs Stoten who enabled almost eighty students led by Sam Harrison, Eleanor Thomas, Sebastian Perez and Cara Wilcock to produce a great show demonstrating excellent teamwork across all five year groups. We also thank Criterion Ices who donated all the interval ice creams.

Monday 15th July The West Suffolk Young Musician of the Year Final This annual event sees the winners of the level two and three heats compete while the level one winners entertain the audience during the adjudication. As the level one woodwind winner, Murrie Kybird in year nine certainly entertained us on the bassoon. At level two, the winner was Beth Soman in year twelve for her flute recital. The level three competition is for the most senior musicians and all were from our school. A large audience at ‘The Apex’ was thoroughly entertained by five outstanding performances from Ashley Nayler (brass); Harry Palmer (woodwind); Beth Soman (voice) and John Young (both strings and piano). John was the very worthy winner and so the West Suffolk Young Musician of the Year 2013 is John Young. It was certainly a very proud contingent from County Upper School in The Apex and we congratulate all the performers as well as our music department for all they do to encourage so many of our students to take part in musical activities. Our special whole school assembly on the final day of the academic year is always used to reward the three qualities we encourage in all our students. Cups, prizes and shields recognised: n Giving your best in all you do; n Getting involved in a whole range of extra-curricular activities; n Being nice young people who serve the community well.

It is our most senior school prize for service. This year it went to a young man who has given outstanding service to our school and who has been a real ambassador for County Upper in the local community. The very worthy winner for 2013 is Harry Palmer.

The Princess Diana Award This annual award is very special. Both staff and students are involved in the nomination which is then considered by a national committee to ensure that all the young people in Great Britain who receive it are fully deserving of such a prestigious award. We had no doubt that approval would be given for our chosen winner for 2013. He is a true ‘County boy” who has always given his best, got involved and given service to our school and the wider community. The Princess Diana Award was presented to Alex Davison. Attendance It is obviously impossible to give your best, get involved 309 students in years nine and ten, representing 59% of or serve our school if you are absent. That is why we those year groups, who have today received certificates work so hard to achieve the highest Upper/High School for 100% attendance this term and especially the following attendance in Suffolk and beyond. We end the year with 22% of those year groups who were awarded prizes for it running at 96.7%, showing just how much our students 100% attendance throughout the year. like their school and enjoy coming. Farewell and Thank You We say farewell today to Miss Clarke and Mrs Pearson who have helped us out this year. Miss Andrew leaves us after six years’ outstanding service as a teacher and a tutor. Many students will remember her for her excellent teaching and genuine care for them. It is fitting that she is going to promotion as a Head of Year at East Bergholt High School. We wish her every success in her new post and thank her for all she has contributed to our school.
