    Does Holding a Teacher Education Degree Make a Difference in School Counselors’ Job Performance? David M. Stein and Scott DeBerard Utah State University 2 Abstract An important hiring criterion maintained by some school districts is that school counselors possess a teaching certificate and prior teaching experience. The present study examined the actual job performance of novice school counselor (interns) in relation to whether they had teacher certification and at least two years of teaching experience, or entered the school counseling profession as non-teachers. Results showed that standardized supervisors’ evaluations of counselor interns’ performance in four main skill areas (Professional Behavior, Clinical Skills, Teaching Skills, Hireability) were not associated with prior teacher training and/or experience. However, male, novice counselors were rated somewhat lower on the domain of Professional Behavior than female counselors. The methodological advantages of studying the teacher- counselor question using novice counselors and expert supervisor-evaluators are discussed. The implications for graduate program training and hiring practices are summarized. Tang, Kok-Mun Ng doi:10.15241/akt.9.4.347 Based on archival data from an urban school district, this retrospective correlational study examined the extent to which certain types of student–school counselor contacts, based on a student-report high school exit survey, could predict high school students’ postsecondary enrollment in 2- and 4-year colleges within 5 years of graduating from high school. In addition to these variables, information such as ethnicity, grade point average, and free and reduced lunch status were used to identify other trends in the data. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that counselor contact regarding college planning and attendance and demographic information regarding free and reduced lunch status were significant predictors of postsecondary enrollment. Counselor contact regarding goal setting, concerns about grades, and needing more college information did not significantly predict postsecondary college enrollment. Findings suggest some school counselor duties can serve as sources of social capital, which can help increase student social capital. However, the duty to remain current on all laws, regulations and policies concerning students and their rights is an integral part of every school counselor’s job. Cumulative records, whether students believe it or not, follow them throughout their academic career. These files hold invaluable information about each student including grades, test scores, and much more. In the past 30 years the role of schools and school personnel concerning the maintenance and security of school records has evolved. The most significant piece of legislation concerning the handling school records has to be the Federal Education and Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974.
