SIRIUS Enhances 100% Commercial-Free Music and Talk Programming Lineup SIRIUS Enhances 100% Commercial-Free Music And Talk Programming Lineup Satellite Radio Broadcaster Launches Eight New Music Streams, Two New Comedy Streams and EWTN Catholic Radio in Two Languages, Plus Enhancements To Information and Talk Show Lineup CES, LAS VEGAS & NEW YORK – January 7, 2004 – SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI), known for delivering the very best in 100% commercial-free music and premium sports programming to cars and homes across the country, announced that it is launching new music, comedy, entertainment and information streams on January 19. The new streams (not available from any other source): SIRIUS Love // 3 serves listeners the music that says it all when words would otherwise get in the way. This stream focuses on soft pop music from four decades, featuring positive love songs from artists of every genre and every generation. Leave the breakups and heartache behind. It’s an ideal stream to set a romantic mood. Classic Vinyl // 14 features early classic rock from the genre’s most formative years: the mid-‘60s to the late-‘70s. Tune in for The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Doors and more. Classic Rewind // 15 plays the second generation of classic rock from the late-‘70s and on. Music from the likes of Boston, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, The Police, and Tom Petty rock all day and night. Buzzsaw // 18: Nothing but hard and heavy classic rock from artists including AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Rush, Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen. Faction // 28 delivers an extreme mix of hard rock, hip-hop, punk and more. Faction’s music and presentation is tailored for a young male audience disenfranchised by traditional radio outlets. Faction artists include Rage Against The Machine, 50 Cent, Rancid, Dr. Dre, System Of A Down, Busta Rhymes and Chemical Brothers. Chill // 64 a unique combination of electronic-based music from artists such as Moby, Massive Attack and Groove Armada along with downtempo songs from Coldplay, Radiohead and Dido and more. Chill’s programming is customized for adults seeking a hip alternative to traditional background radio. SIRIUS Pops // 86 plays classical music favorites that everyone can enjoy. Tropical // 92 is a music experience dedicated to Caribbean dance rhythms, featuring artists from Marc Anthony and Celia Cruz to Tito Puente.   • California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman
    ABSTRACT Tinkering has long figured prominently in the history of the electric guitar. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, two guitarists based in the burgeoning Southern California hard rock scene adapted technological tinkering to their musical endeavors. Edward Van Halen, lead guitarist for Van Halen, became the most celebrated rock guitar virtuoso of the 1980s, but was just as noted amongst guitar aficionados for his tinkering with the electric guitar, designing his own instruments out of the remains of guitars that he had dismembered in his own workshop. Greg Ginn, guitarist for Black Flag, ran his own amateur radio supply shop before forming the band, and named his noted independent record label, SST, after the solid state transistors that he used in his own tinkering. This paper explores the ways in which music-based tinkering played a part in the construction of virtuosity around the figure of Van Halen, and the definition of artistic ‘independence’ for the more confrontational Black Flag. It further posits that tinkering in popular music cuts across musical genres, and joins music to broader cultural currents around technology, such as technological enthusiasm, the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos, and the use of technology for the purposes of fortifying masculinity. Educators have also found success incorporating comedy into the classroom with humorous activities. While research regarding comedy as a tool to spread information or educate audiences has focused primarily on literature, broadcast media, and film, the area of informative comedy implemented through music remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, the researcher defines ‘informative comedy’ and takes a critical literacy approach analysing song samples of comedy musician “Weird Al” Yankovic—one of the notable comedic music artists in the 20th and 21st centuries—and discusses how his music could be used in a classroom setting. While comedy such as Yankovic’s is not designed to be an educational tool, the researcher suggests that his songs could be used as supplementary materials in the classroom to reinforce concepts specifically regarding cultural issues through commentary as well as lessons in science and grammar. A central aspect of this exploratory paper involves Yankovic’s mix of comedy and informative content focused on culture in the United States, using the popular music genre to convey ideas in ways that may be more palatable for wider audiences and that could be used to assist classroom instruction.
