2007 Season Outlook

And The one constant for Fiffles throughout the years has been while Lewis University was that fifth-place team, Flyers’ head defense, and this season’s team is not lacking. But it’s the Flyers’ coach Evan Fiffles believes his squad can make up the difference offense that has Fiffles the most excited. in 2007. “We are strong and much better offensively than a year ago,” “Our goal is to claim the regular season championship and go Fiffles said. “We have a lot of guys that can put the ball in the back from there,” said Fiffles, who is in his 16th season as the Flyers’ of the net with regularity. boss. “With just a two-game difference among the top five teams, “For the first time since I can remember, I have a true scoring we were right in the hunt. On the other side, Fiffles has several options, including senior “We have our core of experienced talent,” said Fiffles, who Anthony Marsico, an NSCAA all-region second team pick in earned his 200th career win last season. “But we’re also going to 2006, junior Jorge De Jesus and freshmen Mardoche Beya and have six or seven freshmen starters right away. This is a deep team Armin Vrebac. “Anthony Jorge and Armin are all guys that will score goals for Forward Cory Mastey led Lewis in points (28) and goals (12) last season. us,” Fiffles continued. “They are all major scoring threats. Any one of them can step in and our offense won’t miss a beat.” “Mardoche is a guy who has the ability to score 10 goals as a freshman,” Fiffles said. “He has good speed and size, and he is a smart player. He’s going to play bigger than a freshman.” In the midfield, Fiffles has a number of viable options. Juniors Chris Buczkowski and Craig McIntosh and sophomores Tim Vance, Nestor Hernandez and Kipp Cartwright combined for over 60 starts last season. The group accounted for eight goals and 12 of the team’s 27 assists. “Chris worked very hard during the offseason,” Fiffles said. “He’s a big, quick kid and a workhorse. Craig is a ball-winner and hard tackler. Tim is always on the ball. Nestor has some speed, and he earned a lot of time last year.” Sophomores Charlie Bucio and Art Rodriguez should also com- pete for playing time in the middle. “Charlie is great at holding the ball,” Fiffles said. “Art had a great spring and came in to training in top shape. It’s going to be hard to keep those guys off the field.” The Flyers’ defense consists of experience and depth, backed by a goalkeeper who emerged as one of the top keepers in confer- ence last season. Sophomore defender Justin Vander-Heyden earned all-region honors as a freshman, but injury has sidelined him for 2007. “Justin is a complete player,” Fiffles said. “He was our best defender last season. Having him out of the line-up changes they way we’re going to do some things, but I’m confident our defense will still be among the best in the conference.” Returning players to the Flyers’ backfield are senior Ryan Doody, who started 14 games last season, and juniors Joey De Francesco (19 starts) Mark Switalski and Alex Koprowski. Fresh- men Zac Bond and Brian Chrencik also figure to vie for time. “Ryan is a senior who will provide great leadership,” Fiffles said. “Mark is our best ball-winner in the air. Alex won a starting spot 2007 Season Outlook toward the end of last season. He has above-average speed and not too many guys get by him. Joey is a natural lefty who brings good size and is great on the ball. “Zac leads the crop of freshmen defenders,” Fiffles added. “Other than Cory, Zac is the fastest guy on the team. He’s aggres- sive and a hard player.” Junior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel won the starting spot last season and earned all-region recognition. He posted the confer- ence’s sixth-best goals-against average (0.97) and ranked fifth in the GLVC in shutouts (5). “Anthony is in great shape,” Fiffles said. “He has good size, and he has worked on his quickness. He’s improved each season since he’s been here, and I know he’s going to be even better this year.” With a roster as deep and talented as the one the Flyers have this season, Fiffles figures to receive valuable contributions from whomever he calls upon. “The key is going to be how the guys react if they aren’t play- ing,” Fiffles said. “Top to bottom, these guys need to work hard and maintain the right attitude for our team to have success. Our conference has good competition, and we have an opportunity to be right there.” The GLVC coaches selected defending conference champion Southern Illinois Edwardsville as the favorite in the preseason poll, but Fiffles thinks Northern Kentucky is the team to beat. “NKU brought back a lot,” Fiffles said. “But there are a number of teams who can get it done. Depth-wise, I think this is one of the best conferences in the country. There’s more of a commit- ment going into the programs, and it shows. One through nine in Goalkeeper Anthony Szymel made 48 saves last season. the conference is very strong.” Flyer Coaching Staff Evan Fiffles Head Coach Now in his 16th season as Lewis University’s head men’s soccer coach, Evan Fiffles has developed one of the most respected and successful programs in NCAA Division II. Lewis posted a 12-6-1 record last year, producing the program’s 15th consecutive winning season and 15th consecutive season with at least 10 victories under Fiffles’ leadership. Fiffles’ 2004 Flyer squad earned an invitation to the NCAA Division II Championship for a fourth time in five seasons, making Lewis one of only six Division II teams in the nation, and the only Great Lakes Region program, to play in at least four national tournaments during that five-year span. The Flyers posted a 16-3-3 record and ascended to the No. 2 national ranking during the season. The 2003 Flyers claimed the Great Lakes Valley Conference title for a fifth time under Fiffles by win- ning the GLVC Championship tournament. That followed a second-place tie in the regular-season stand- ings that marked the 11th time during Fiffles’ tenure that Lewis has placed either first or second. In 2002, Lewis finished atop the GLVC regular-season standings for a fifth successive year and earned the program’s third consecutive NCAA Championship bid. The 2001 team achieved a 20-1-1 record - best in program history and second best in Division II that season - attained the No. 1 national ranking twice during the regular season, won the GLVC crown and finished fifth nationally with a 0.75 goals-against average. Fiffles guided the 2000 Flyers to 17 wins - the school record prior to 2001 - and the program’s first NCAA Championship bid. After beating Wisconsin-Parkside and Wheeling Jesuit in the NCAA tournament’s first two rounds, Lewis fell in the semifinals to eventual national champion California State-Dominguez Hills and concluded the season ranked No. 4 nationally. BOOSTERS, FRIENDS & FANS The following information is provided by the Lewis University Athletics Department for representatives of athletic interests (boosters):

INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) declares that each institution (Lewis University) is responsible for the control of its intercolle- giate athletics program and compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. This control includes the conduct and actions of all staff members and other individuals or agencies that promote the athletic interests of Lewis University. Representatives of Lewis University ‘s athletics interests are strictly prohibited from off-campus recruiting activities involving personal contact with potential student athletes.

KEY COMPLIANCE DEFINITIONS Prospective Student-Athlete: A student who has started classes for the ninth grade, including students in prep schools and junior colleges, and individuals who have officially withdrawn from four-year schools. Any student not yet in the ninth grade becomes a prospect if an institution provides the student with any financial assistance or other benefits that are generally not provided to prospective students. Contact: A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parents, relatives or legal guardian(s) and a Lewis University staff mem- ber or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Recruiting: Any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect’s relatives (or legal guardian) by a Lewis University staff member or representative of the institution’s athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and participation in the Lewis University intercollegiate athletics program. Extra Benefit: An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a Lewis University employee or a representative of athletics interest to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend with a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. National Letter of Intent (NLI): An official document administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association and utilized by subscribing member institutions, including Lewis University, to establish the commitment of a prospective student-athlete to attend a particular institution. NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse: A central clearinghouse that certifies athletics eligibility for Division I and II student-athletes. The Clearinghouse uses high school courses and test scores (ACT/SAT) to determine freshman athletics eligibility.

WHAT IS A BOOSTER? A “representative of the institution’s athletics interests” or booster is an individual who is known (or who should have been known) by a member of the institution’s executive or athletics administration to:

Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization, including corporate entities (e.g., apparel and equipment companies), promot- ing the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program; Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution; Be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospects; Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program. Once an individual is identified as a booster, that person retains the distinction indefinitely.

LEWIS ATHLETICS BOOSTERS--DID YOU KNOW? You may provide information about recruits to Lewis University coaches by sending newspaper clippings or calling a coach. You may employ a student-athlete at your place of business as long as the student-athlete receives prior approval from the Lewis University Depart- ment of Athletics, and receives the same rate of pay as your other employees. You may invite a current student-athlete or team to your home for an occasional meal. You may donate financial assistance or gifts-in-kind to the Lewis University Varsity Club or team’s individual fundraising drive. You may not provide extra benefits, including discounted items or services, free meals, use of an automobile, to a current student-athlete or to a recruit. You may not speak with recruits, or their families, about attending Lewis University and his/her opportunities with Lewis University athletics. Have more questions?
