Bend stiffener material change: review of bridging document UK1278-TE-110 Rev 03
Dear Dave,
Further to our discussion, document UK1278-TE-110 Rev 03 detailing mechanical and physical evaluation of polymers manufactured using mercury and non-mercury polymerisation route for PU05 and PU06 grade polymer materials has been reviewed, and results of tests listed below indicate polymer materials manufactured with and without the mercury catalyst to be similar a) Infra-red spectroscopy b) Tensile stress strain characterisation c) Variance of tensile properties with temperature
It is noted there are statistical difference in tensile properties after hydrothermal ageing; however it is also noted strain values are over 200% and maximum design strains for the bend stiffeners, for any conditions, will be maintained below 10% (as detailed in the Design Methodology). There has been nothing identified in UK1278-TE-110 Rev03 suggesting any statistically significant difference in performance between bend stiffeners manufactured from Mercury free material and the mercury containing material previously qualified to API17L1 (MNDE/2014/6058) when operating within the range covered in the design methodology. It is noted that the design methodology is independent of material qualification and remains unchanged (ECL-TEC-1400018).
Also additional testing, under witnessed Survey by Lloyd’s Register is continuing as part of material verification
