The route was extended over a number of years, reaching its’ present terminus at Pen y Bont in 1976. Reaching the town centre has been a long-held ambition of the railway company. 1.2.2 The creation of the Bala Lake Railway Trust (BLRT) in 2013 which has assembled a team of Trustees with the right skills to deliver the project together with a tax-efficient and accountable vehicle to receive donations has enabled the project to develop. 1.2.3 Key members of the Bala Lake Railway Trust include; Julian Birley BEM Julian has been involved with railway preservation as a volunteer for over twenty years, initially with the North Norfolk Railway and subsequently all over the UK. He was Transport Trust Preservationist of the Year in 2002 and awarded the British Empire Medal in 2015 for services to railway heritage. Christina Kennedy Christina has a Masters Degree in Business Administration and was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries. She worked at Board level, acting as Company Secretary in a variety of listed companies. Her industry experience is wide ranging and includes manufacturing, leisure and service companies. Steve Davies MBE Steve is a former Colonel in the British Army and lifelong railway enthusiast who has been involved in a significant number of heritage railway projects both on a professional and voluntary basis. On retirement from the Army he served as Director of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, and also in the same role at the National Railway Museum. His past experience also includes the role of Managing Director of Surf Snowdonia in Dolgarrog Toby Watkins Caulmert Ltd 4369-CAU-XX-XX-RP-T-0305.A0.C1 1 July 2021 Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Ltd Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Extension Planning Supporting Statement Toby has been an active railway volunteer for over 30 years with an academic background in history (MA) and heritage conservation (MSc) that helps give context to the work of the Trust. His 'day job' has given him an extensive experience with management of large infrastructure as well as extensive experience in community development and engagement. Roger Hine After moving to Wales in 1985, Roger established his own business before he started to volunteer at the Bala Lake Railway. In 1991 has was offered the post of Chief Engineer at the Railway and became the General Manager in 2001 with responsibility for all the commercial activities until retiring in 2014. Caulmert Ltd 4369-CAU-XX-XX-RP-T-0305.A0.C1 2 July 2021 Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Ltd Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Extension Planning Supporting Statement 2.0 THE APPLICATION SITE 2.1 Location 2.1.1 Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake Railway) currently offers a 4.5 mile/ 7.2km long, 2’/ 600mm gauge heritage railway which has run between Llanuwchllyn and Pen y Bont since 1976. The narrow gauge steam trains give excellent views of the lake amid its surrounding scenery including the nearby mountains of Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy. 2.1.2 The application site is located on the southern side of the settlement of Bala. Llyn Tegid also forms a notable feature, bordering the site to the south west and stretching some near 6km south west. 2.1.3 The application site comprises of existing highway, land which will form NRW proposed embankment works, margins of the Bala Rugby Club fields together with agricultural land. The location of the site is shown on Plan Ref ‘4267-CAU-XX-XX-DR-C-1804 and on Figure 1 below. Figure 1 – Site Location Caulmert Ltd 4369-CAU-XX-XX-RP-T-0305.A0.C1 3 July 2021 Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Ltd Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Extension Planning Supporting Statement 2.2 The Surrounding Area 2.2.1 Residential properties are at either end of the proposed extension; at Pen y Bont there is a single dwelling (Lake Cottage) in close proximity to the existing station terminal towards the North West. Towards to the south east of the existing station there is a further property (Pen y Bont Farmhouse) along with Pen y Bont Touring Caravan Park. 2.2.2 To the north of proposed railway line, including the new Heol Aran Station, there are a number of properties starting from Tegid Street through to Aran Street. This is also the heart of Bala Town Centre which comprises of shops, tourist facilities and general local amenities. 2.2.3 The proposed railway line also utilises margins are the existing Bala Rugby Club fields. 2.3 Site Access 2.3.1 The proposed site is well connected by the existing highway network including access from A494 and B4391 which will both serve as access to the proposed Station at Heol Aran Station for traffic from the North and South. 2.3.2 There are two existing car parks within Bala which could be utilised by cars; Plasey Street and The Green. The Plasey Street car park is located immediately opposite to the proposed new station site off Heol Aran and therefore will provide the most convenient location for visitors to the proposed station to park. The Green car park contains facilities for coaches and thereby could be used when organised coach party visits are made to the proposed station. An assessment using Google Maps is reproduced below which confirms The Green coach park is 0.4 miles

The Grand Station banqueting centre, once the GWR’s most northerly broad gauge station, came back to life as a busy passenger station when it hosted the Heritage Railway Association 2015 Awards Night. The HRA Awards recognise a wide range of achievements and distinctions across the entire heritage railway industry, and the awards acknowledge individuals and institutions as well as railways. The February 6th event saw the presentation of awards in eight categories. The National Railway Museum and York Theatre Royal won the Morton’s Media (Heritage Railways) Interpretation Award, for an innovative collaboration that joined theatre with live heritage steam, when the Museum acted as a temporary home for the theatre company. The Railway Magazine Annual Award for Services to Railway Preservation was won by David Woodhouse, MBE, in recognition of his remarkable 60-year heritage railways career, which began as a volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, and took him to senior roles across the heritage railways and tourism industry. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway won the Morton’s Media (Rail Express) Modern Traction Award, for their diesel locomotive operation, which included 160 days working for their Crompton Class 25. There were two winners of the Steam Railway Magazine Award. The Great Little Trains of North Wales was the name used by the judges to describe the Bala Lake Railway, Corris Railway, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, Talyllyn Railway, Vale of Rheidol Railway and the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway.

These areas have similar characteristics and have strong community links. The work on the Zones of Influence draws on a wide range of surveys and related national, regional and local plans and strategies discussed in the Spatial Development Strategy Background Paper. The paper identifies key centres within each zone of influence and recognises the influences of key centres outside the Park to inform the Spatial Development Strategy. The paper identifies key transport routes, key employment areas, and further education and key services for each zone. The landscape is rural in character with scattered farmsteads and small villages. The zone includes Llyn Tegid (the largest natural lake in Wales), Llyn Celyn, Arenig Fawr and parts of the Aran Fawddwy. The main service centre for the area is the market town of Bala. Penllyn has strong traditions based on the Welsh language and culture.

    Hill Walking & Mountaineering in Snowdonia Introduction The craggy heights of Snowdonia are justly regarded as the finest mountain range south of the Scottish Highlands. There is a different appeal to Snowdonia than, within the picturesque hills of, say, Cumbria, where cosy woodland seems to nestle in every valley and each hillside seems neatly manicured. Snowdonia’s hillsides are often rock strewn with deep rugged cwms biting into the flank of virtually every mountainside, sometimes converging from two directions to form soaring ridges which lead to lofty peaks. The proximity of the sea ensures that a fine day affords wonderful views, equally divided between the ever- changing seas and the serried ranks of mountains fading away into the distance. Eryri is the correct Welsh version of the area the English call Snowdonia; Yr Wyddfa is similarly the correct name for the summit of Snowdon, although Snowdon is often used to demarcate the whole massif around the summit. The mountains of Snowdonia stretch nearly fifty miles from the northern heights of the Carneddau, looming darkly over Conwy Bay, to the southern fringes of the Cadair Idris massif, overlooking the tranquil estuary of the Afon Dyfi and Cardigan Bay. From the western end of the Nantlle Ridge to the eastern borders of the Aran range is around twenty- five miles. Within this area lie nine distinct mountain groups containing a wealth of mountain walking possibilities, while just outside the National Park, the Rivals sit astride the Lleyn Peninsula and the Berwyns roll upwards to the east of Bala. The traditional bases of Llanberis, Bethesda, Capel Curig, Betws y Coed and Beddgelert serve the northern hills and in the south Barmouth, Dinas Mawddwy, Dolgellau, Tywyn, Machynlleth and Bala provide good locations for accessing the mountains.

INTRODUCTION. T~ mountains known as Arenig Fawr and Moel Llyfnant are situated somewhat to the north of the centre of the county of Merioneth, and lie immediately east of the main water-parting of Wales. The area studied lies wholly within the quarter-sheets 13 S.E., 13 S.W., 21 IN.E, & 21 I~.W. of the 6-inch Ordnance- Survey maps of Merionethshire. Rising from a plateau some 800 to 1200 feet high, they attain heights of 2800 and 2437 feet respectively, and, being entirely above the cultivation-zone, are practically uninhabited. The Great Western ]3ala-Ffestiniog Railway crosses the northern end of the district, to which Arenig Station, close under the northern slopes of Arenig Fawr, affords easy access. Although to a certain extent glaciated, the mountains are swept clean rather than Drift-covered, and it is only in the lower ground that moraines become inconveniently abundant. The adaptation of surface-forms to rock-structures is exceedingly complete, and few are the places where the ribs of harder rocks do not protrude through the scanty soil or turf. Being open to the full blast of the westerly and south-westerly gales from the ocean, the district, receives its full share of weather ; and, in consequence, ahhough the eastern slopes are often grass- or heather-covered, the steeper parts of the western slopes are rugged and bare, and afford magnificent exposures of the component rocks.
