Opposition Party Mobilization in South Africa's Dominant
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Eroding Dominance from Below: Opposition Party Mobilization in South Africa’s Dominant Party System A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science by Safia Abukar Farole 2019 © Copyright by Safia Abukar Farole 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Eroding Dominance from Below: Opposition Party Mobilization in South Africa’s Dominant Party System by Safia Abukar Farole Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Kathleen Bawn, Chair In countries ruled by a single party for a long period of time, how does political opposition to the ruling party grow? In this dissertation, I study the growth in support for the Democratic Alliance (DA) party, which is the largest opposition party in South Africa. South Africa is a case of democratic dominant party rule, a party system in which fair but uncompetitive elections are held. I argue that opposition party growth in dominant party systems is explained by the strategies that opposition parties adopt in local government and the factors that shape political competition in local politics. I argue that opposition parties can use time spent in local government to expand beyond their base by delivering services effectively and outperforming the ruling party. I also argue that performance in subnational political office helps opposition parties build a reputation for good governance, which is appealing to ruling party ii. supporters who are looking for an alternative. Finally, I argue that opposition parties use candidate nominations for local elections as a means to appeal to constituents that are vital to the ruling party’s coalition. -
Movember Set to Improve Men's Health This November
MOVEMBER SET TO IMPROVE MEN’S HEALTH THIS NOVEMBER AT THE MELBOURNE WORLD CUP OF GOLF 21 June, 2018: To help raise much needed funds, and awareness of men’s health issues, the Movember Foundation will come in swinging following their appointment as the official charity of the Melbourne World Cup of Golf, to be held at The Metropolitan Golf Club from the 21-25 November 2018. And with players from 28 nations descending on Melbourne for the event, the opportunity exists for players and fans to sport a traditional national mo to support the cause and get involved. The Movember Foundation has one goal: to stop men dying too young. As the only global charity tackling men’s health issues year-round, the Foundation funds programs tackling prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. In 2018, more than 1.4 million men globally will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Three out of every four suicides are men and, in Australia, testicular cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men between the ages of 20 and 34. With those statistics, Melbourne World Cup of Golf Executive Director Robyn Cooper says the Movember Foundation is the perfect fit for the tournament. “We are proud to be able to support a global charity that was born in Melbourne,” Cooper said. “Approximately 75% of the world’s golfers are male and from Craig "The Walrus" Stadler to John Daly and our own Geoff Ogilvy to legendary caddie Mike "Fluff" Cowen, the moustache has long been the trademark of the stylish pro golfer.” The PGA TOUR has been a strong supporter of the moustache, with the Web.com Tour conducting the annual Moustache Madness contest at the Utah Championships every July. -

The FIFA World Cup, Human Rights Goals and the Gulf Between Richard Peltz-Steele Abstract With Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 on the horizon, the process for selecting hosts for the World Cup of men’s football has been plagued by charges of corruption and human rights abuses. FIFA celebrated key developing economies with South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014. But amid the aftermath of the global financial crisis, those sitings surfaced grave and persistent criticism of the social and economic efficacy of sporting mega-events. Meanwhile new norms emerged in global governance, embodied in instruments such as the U.N. Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) and the Sustainable Development Goals. These norms posit that commercial aims can be harmonized with socioeconomic good. FIFA seized on the chance to restore public confidence and recommit itself to human exultation in sport, adopting sustainability strategies and engaging the architect of the UNGP to develop a human rights policy. -

Mardy Fish Named Us Davis Cup Captain
MARDY FISH NAMED U.S. DAVIS CUP CAPTAIN WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., January 9, 2019 – The USTA today announced that former world No. 7 and Davis Cup veteran Mardy Fish has been named the new captain of the U.S. Davis Cup Team. He succeeds Jim Courier to become the 41 st captain in the team’s 120-year history and will make his debut at the newly transformed Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals November 18-24 in Madrid, Spain. “Ever since I started playing professionally and started understanding what the Davis Cup was and how special it was, even as a player, I wanted to be the Davis Cup Captain,” Fish said. “I just thought that position was so special – leading the guys and leading the team, building relationships and the team aspect around it. I’m a team-sport athlete stuck in an individual sport, and I love the team aspect of Davis Cup. To even be considered, let alone named the Captain, is incredibly humbling.” In this new era of Davis Cup, the role of Captain will be expanded, with the position working more closely with USTA Player Development throughout the year, as well as traveling to multiple tournaments and camps to support American players, serving as a mentor for American pros and juniors. He will also ensure the U.S. Davis Cup team remains a strong platform to grow the game through the USTA’s Net Generation youth initiative. “Mardy Fish embodies all of the qualities of a successful Davis Cup Captain and will be an invaluable asset to Team USA,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President Patrick Galbraith. -
The South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup: a Look Back: Perceptions of Its Impact on Tourism in South Africa
International Review of Management and Marketing ISSN: 2146-4405 available at http: www.econjournals.com International Review of Management and Marketing, 2021, 11(4), 49-58. The South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup: A Look Back: Perceptions of its Impact on Tourism in South Africa Tinashe Chuchu* School of Business Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. *Email: [email protected] Received: 06 May 2021 Accepted: 08 July 2021 DOI: https://doi.org/10.32479/irmm.11593 ABSTRACT Africa’s first FIFA World Cup sparked a series of scholarly work mostly conducted prior to this event. This phenomena is still relevant today with many unanswered questions. This research therefore investigates and examines literature on how the 2010 FIFA World Cup is perceived almost a decade later. A qualitative approach was adopted based on secondary data sources and grey literature. Contextual information was gathered from popular data bases that include Science direct, Ebsco host, Emerald and Google scholar. A total of 20 studies on both tourism in South Africa and the 2010 FIFA World Cup published between 2004 and 2019 were examined and systematically presented and discussed. Recurring trends based on review of literature were identified. The destination image theory and the destination concept were used to comprehend international visitors’ attitudes and their interpretation of South Africa as a travel destination. One of key findings was that the crime in South Africa, before, during after the World Cup ranks highest in terms of tourism deterrence. However, the event was generally perceived positive as a fairly positive success with room for socio-economic improvement.
